I am sorry about the shortage of prey outside our borders, but it is just as bad inside our borders. With Leaf-Bare beating, we need all the prey we can get. We can't have a loner taking it."

Sandpaw sighed. "Come on, I know-" she paused and froze. She heard a rustle in some bushes and scented the air. Puddlepaw! "Puddlepaw, what are you doing here?!" She hissed, staring into her brother's hiding place. "Why did you follow me?!"

Puddlepaw shrank back a little. "I'm not here!" he blurted out. "I mean... I didn't follow you!" He sighed. "Wrong lie," he muttered under his breath, too quietly to be heard.

Gem's eyes widened. "Who's this?" she asked, feigning innocent curiosity.

Jack's tail lashed. "And my kit?"

Sandpaw looked over at Gem. "This is my brother Puddlepaw," she meowed, then looked back at her brother. "Puddlepaw, I can't believe you. You followed me!"

Shatterstar sighed. "I offered you and your kit sanctuary, but you refuse. I know your kit is older than she looks, so she can make the decision herself."

Gem smiled. "Well, I'm Gem. Don't worry, Puddlepaw, Sandpaw and I were just talking. We met during the..." She glanced aside. "You know."

Jack stared at her blankly. "Angel cannot decide on her own. She is my kit and she knows she needs me."

Sandpaw looked back at Gem. "Alright, Puddlepaw. Come over here," she meowed, tail wrapped around her paws.
