This is one of the many legends of the Hoenn region...
Long, long ago, there existed two Pokémon: Groudon, ruler of the earth, and Kyogre, ruler of the sea. These two Pokémon were always quarreling, for their elements conflicted. Whenever the two fought, devastating disasters would occur; earthquakes, tidal waves, floods, droughts. These disasters lasted for centuries, and many Pokémon perished; several species almost went extinct. It seemed like the turmoil would never end.
When all hope seemed lost, the Great Dragon Rayquaza, ruler of the skies, appeared and stopped the conflict between the two beasts with its power. Groudon and Kyogre's conflict finally stopped, and they retreated to places far below the surface of the world to slumber. The devastating natural disasters finally stopped, and the Pokémon could live in peace. However, this would not last forever...
A millennium later, a meteorite landed in the Hoenn region, creating huge cracks in the land and awakening Groudon and Kyogre, causing them to quarrel again. The horrid disasters returned, and even more lives were lost. However, a group of humans known as the Draconids, having passed down tales of the first conflict through legend, summoned Rayquaza to stop the two beasts. The power of the meteorite allowed the Great Dragon to ascend to a greater form, which would later become known as Mega Rayquaza, the first Mega Evolution. Once again, the world was safe, but the damage could not be undone.
During these periods of conflict, the Eon Pokémon, once abundant throughout Hoenn, almost completely perished. They retreated to a hidden place known as Southern Island, a place in a gap between dimensions that few can reach. The female Eon Pokémon became known as "Latias", and the male became known as "Latios", from a word from an ancient language meaning "to lie hidden". It is said that if an Eon Pokémon ever ventures away from Southern Island, they have found a human worthy of stopping Groudon and Kyogre.
This is one of the many legends of the Hoenn region. Every legend has some truth to it...
