[Note: This is told more from a dog's point of view, so sorry if anything doesn't make sense.]

Scout [m] & Flurry [f]
---
Flurry buried herself beneath the snow, sheltering herself from the harsh winds above. The little shepherd mutt wasn't meant for such harsh weather. She was bred to withstand to rough play of children tugging at her ears and the most heated games of tug-o-war. She was the protector, a best friend, and a shoulder to cry on.
She wouldn't last a day out here.
She had never truly been afraid of the wild. Like many dogs, she even longed for it sometimes. The feeling of running free, the wind rushing through her fur. It was the best feeling in the world. Every night she'd dream of it. Freshly fallen snow crunching beneath her feet. She'd be running alongside a pack, hunting among the wolves.
Reality, it seemed, was far crueler than her dreams.
She let out a long, mournful howl, proclaiming to all her sorrow.
---
The whistle blew, jolting Scout from his sleep. The large dog bounced up, eagerly awaiting his master's command. With commands came treats, and with treats came belly scratches and affection. For this the dog pledged his loyalty to his master, and for this he would give his life if needed. With only these two things in mind the dog watched him, his eyes pleading, hoping silently for his reward.
"Sit"
Without a moment's hesitation the dog sat, his tail thumping eagerly on the floor.
"Good dog." The man praised, tossing a treat into the dog's mouth and giving him a quick scratch on the head.
Thump, thump, thump.
"Ready for your first job? There's a nice big blizzard today, perfect time for a bit of practice, eh?" He asked.
Though he had no idea what the man was speaking of, Scout's expression was unchanging. He liked when his owner talked to him. Words so often meant treats on fun. He only knew a few of them, sure, but there were always new ones to be learned. Sometimes, if he did something when a word was said, he got a treat. He knew sit, stay, leave it, speak, shake, roll over... There were so many. His favorite was roll over. When he did a roll over he always got belly scratches.
"Go for a walk" was another one of his favorites. Go for a walk meant playing in the snow and meeting other dogs. If he was lucky his owner would bring a green ball and then they'd "fetch." He liked doing "fetch." Most of all he loved to run and he loved to track down the ball. He loved sniffing it out and jumping into the snow drifts to get it. His master would always be so proud when he returned.
"Come on, Trainee! Let's go for a walk!"
Obediently the dog trotted to his side. He was confused though. To master he was always Scout, never "Trainee." Perhaps it was another new word. His tail wagged slowly as he thought it over, occasionally trying different behaviors in an attempt to earn the treat. If "Trainee" was a treat word, then he was determined to figure it out. The master chuckled and again scratched his head. "Come on Scout, we still have work to do."
Relieved to hear his own name and to be free of the confusion, again he followed his master. Another thing was different. Carried by his master was not his favorite green ball, but a large stack of human objects. In his hand wound a long, terrifying snake. Immediately the dog backed away, barking and snarling at the foreign object. He had to scare it away from his owner. He had to distract the snake and lure it away.
Again his master laughed, hiding the "snake" behind his back and presented Scout with a treat. With the dog distracted, carefully he attached a collar and the leash to his neck.
Chewing happily on the treat Scout again calmed himself. The snake was a friend to him, it seemed, for Master was not afraid and so far the remained unharmed. Again the quiet rhythm of his tail began as it bounced off of his master's leg.
Thump, thump, thump.
---
Carefully Flurry surveyed the landscape, searching for even the tiniest glimmer of hope, but there was nothing. She longed to see the warm glow of her home again. She remembered the long, lazy days spent relaxed by the fireplace. Even now, in this cold, desolate place, she couldn't help but feel warm inside. Her paws were numb and every inch of her body ached, but it didn't matter now.
She was home.
The thought of dying no longer scared her, or at least, not quite as much as it should have. There were worse ways to die, of course, and the snow looked so peaceful... so soft. If she just put her head down...
Her head shot up again, the voice inside her jolting her awake. She had to survive. She had to see the fire one last time and feel the true warmth of a home, not simply a distant memory. She'd fight until the end, her instincts wouldn't allow her to do anything else.
Once again she howled, louder this time.
---
Arrrroooooooooooooo!
---
The sound echoed down the mountain. Scout listened intently, doing his best to locate it. It was a dog sound, just as his master gave him a dog scent. This had to be it.
The dog bolted forward, tugging at the snake and pulling his master on, up and up the mountain. He was on a mission. Follow the dog sounds, follow the dog scent, and follow the paw tracks, and please his master. Pleasing his master meant head scratches, and he liked it when his master was pleased.
He couldn't feel the man slowly slipping behind, or the gradual loosening of the snake the clenched his neck. The master was shouting words again, words he didn't understand. He said it in the "bad dog" tone, but he knew he wasn't being a bad dog. He was doing as his master said. They were different words as well. Yet the man kept shouting them, until finally the voice faded. Scout wagged his tail, it meant he knew how to "slow down."
But there was no "good dog" or head scratches from the master. Scout whimpered in confusion, trying to get his master to respond, but still he was ignored. Perhaps he needed to slow down again. The dog immediately set to work trying to figure out "slow down" again, all the while following his tracks.
Suddenly the tracks ended. The dog scent was stronger too. Scout barked his excitement, rushing over to greet the other dog, the object of his mission. He turned around to find his master, only to find that he had disappeared.
---
The two dogs greeted each other warmly, excited to see a friendly face and not quite grasping the concept of aggression. Flurry play tackled the larger dog to the ground, happily engaging in their little puppy games. They played until sun down, when the sky glowed with the soft tones of a sunset and the temperature dropped. Exhausted, the two fell asleep in the snow, wet fur freezing to their sides.
Thump, thump, thump.
Felt like writing a slightly different love story. They're not brightly colored dogs with human minds, they're simply two human pets.

[googol & artemis]We were never meant to meet. The circumstances under which our alliance formed were less than satisfactory. It happens to all of us though, the time when we realize our differences are trivial and our need for survival will inevitably outweigh our petty dislikes. When we finally see the world was never the cheery place our childhood made us believe it was, nor would it ever be anything but a constant struggle for life. Today will die and become tomorrow, and yesterday never was in the circle we tumble through.
From my CS characters thread, I may finish the story for these two. I kindof like the mystery though.
Artemis is my favorite (and first) CS pet, and Googol is the most handsome dog IMO. ^^
zomg that is epic! <3 I love this pairing.
