back when he would smile, he was in love. She was beautiful.
Her name was Mary; the name brings tears to his eyes now.
Clay she called him. Sounds so strange coming out of his
mouth… Clay… But he wants be called Claurance now,
suits him better.----
He asked me to tell you his story; he has hid behind his mask long enough.
Poor Claurance. Before he knew Mary, he was clear, shining, and full of
energy. He met Mary in a cherry tree field that had a small rose bush
garden in the center. I could not get the full information out of him, but
he did mention something about a given rose, and a kiss. Claurance
told me their relationship took off after that, maybe that’s what went
wrong. He loved her so much.------------------------
After a year, they were both hopelessly lost in love. He planned
an amazing dinner that night, and a romantic walk back in the
cherry tree field. He was going to propose. He had bought an
adorable one bedroom house for them. They were going to be
a family. He waited two hours and forty three minutes for her
to show up at the restaurant, she insisted on driving herself.
He decided to drive to her house, maybe she forgot? Maybe
she could not decide on what to wear? Claurance did not want
to think of the worse end.He drove slowly, and when he turned onto her street, he
could tell something was wrong. He wanted to turn around
right then and there. Claurance told me he parked, and slowly
got out of the car. He looked around and noticed the other
car. He walked in the door and noticed the keys on the table,
not hers, and the shoes by the door, not hers either. He slowly
walked in the kitchen, living room, not there. The lights were
on upstairs though. He walked up stairs and saw her, his
Mary, holding hands and kissing another man. His Mary!
He was so mad, he ran in his car and drove away, way past
the speed limit. He did not want to go home. She would
follow him there. He did not want to see her. So Claurance
drove to the old cherry tree field. He regretted the minutes
to follow for the rest of his life.He went to the back of his truck and pulled out a gas can and
drenched the little rose bush garden in the center. He set the
wedding ring in the center and struck a match. He tossed it
on the rosebush where they had met and watched the garden
burn. He heard sirens and ran. He got in his car and drove.
He knew he could be found, as there had never been anyone
that looked like him. So the first thing he did was drive to a
costume store and bought a mask.------
In the days to follow he never cried, just ran.
He feared being caught. He noticed he slowly
started to fill with water, it was his sorrow. His
lack of tears filled him. And his sorrow
consumed him. She had broken him.
