I think the wait is approprite, and I like the first option of the breeding ^^ Maybe both are choices? Like you have a chance of a large litter, which has a long wait, or for a small litter, which has a short wait.

I like the idea of the aging stretched out because role playing time is longer than real time, so it would make sense since a day to them could be three days for us sometimes.
Also I like the last idea with bigger litters longer recovery too^^
