Millard walked inside the trailer... his old stomping grounds. The tattered sofa. The fake bear rug. The television with the cracked screen. Those had been his only family, when Al had died. Millard had sought to find love in the flickering glow of Even Stevens reruns, but nothing could replace the blind, slobbering devotion of a dog too stupid to know better.

October
The woman strode into the trailer, doing her best to ignore the stench that slammed into her like a 2 ton rhino. She noticed where Peacorn was headed; the kitchen. That could only mean one thing; sugar cookies. And that meant... "Peacorn!" She shouted, "Don't bring those toxic pastries out here." She focused now on Millard, "How's life coming along, my dear dear boy?"

Millard sat on the sofa and angrily pretended to text, because he had no actual friends with whom to share his woes. His last friend, when they'd interacted most recently, had thrown a bowl of partially-microwaved macaroni and cheese at him before assaulting him with phrases like "helpless imbecile" and "self-righteous turd."

October was not the sort of woman to be ignored or disobeyed. She marched past her brother, slapping the tray of cookies out of his hands in the process, then selected an old card table to sit on. She cleared her throat and spoke, "Millard, I can take care of you, mentally and financially. I don't know what my brother's been doing to you, but anything coming from a man who buried his wife and dogs in the same yard can't be healthy."

Her face drained of what little color her cheap blush provided, "Your father didn't tell you about Carlos...?" Her voice was hoarse, barely audible. She didn't know how close the terrier had been to Millard, but if it was anything like what it was with Al, well, her gaining his custody was a shoe-in.
