It seemed odd to see the school so quiet. Then again, it was mid-august. School would start up again at the end of the month. After being dropped off and wished good luck, you made your way over to the band room. Just walking through the hallway, you could already hear the cheerful blasts of drummers and their music.
Finally reaching the band room, you hesitated. This was an award winning showband after all, it would be a tough band camp.
Opening the door led you to a room filled with chatter and excitement. A blonde drummer looked out from over the room.
"Hey look who made it!"

Ｕｎｉｆｏｒｍｓ

The uniform colors are Green and Gold, with
Black overalls. The plumes on the hat are
usually off, but can be worn on certain
performances. It depends on what the band
director wishes.
The shoes are black. If you happen to loose
them there are extra in the storage room.

Ｆｉｅｌｄ

The field is a turf field. It is not uncommon
to find turf in your shoe after marching out onto
the field. The band rests on the track during the
breaks. When eating, they get their food under
the bleachers or in the band room.

Ｂａｎｄ Ｒｏｏｍ ａｎｄ Ｌｏｃｋｅｒ Ｒｏｏｍ

The band spends a majority of band camp in here. When not on the field,
they are eating, playing, or hanging out in here. The locker rooms are not
to be messed with, they are only used for storage.
The band changes in the band room. No they do not entirely change, they
simply place their uniforms over top of their clothing.
After band camp, the chairs are to be folded neatly and placed along the wall
until school starts back up.

Ｄａｎｃｅ Ｓｔｕｄｉｏ

It is a strict rule that unless you are requesting the
dance instructor/leader, showband members are not
permitted in the dance studio.
The majorettes practice in here. They arrive early
and practice roughly a half an hour ahead of time
from the showband.

To those who are not familiar with showband, there are some terms that band members use.
- note - these are terms that the showband I am in uses, they might not apply for all schools so that's why i'm placing them here.

▪ Fruitbreak- A snacktime for the band. Commonly before lunch, chaperons would serve fruit under the bleachers.

▪ Senior sit out- usually towards the end of band camp, the director will sometimes let the seniors sit on the bleachers to watch the lower classmen do the routine. This helps them to learn to not rely on upperclassmen for movements, but to learn it themselves.

▪ Band Olympics - During the last day of band camp, it is simply a fun day. Each class ( as in 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th ) dresses in a team color. Then they go and do team sports for fun, such as tug-of-war or softball.

▪ Shows - Yes, it is a term used for performances. However, there can be certain shows where only certain pieces of music are played. For example, "show 1" could have x and y as songs, yet "show 2" has x z and w as songs. During band festivals the director will normally have the band play through all the music.

▪ Band festival - For high schools and sometimes colleges, they go to a field, invited, to preform. It is a great way to show the neighboring school districts what the bands have to offer, and make a bit of money in return.

▪Opener/closer - to put it simply; the songs that open the performance and end the performance.

▪Band Dance - self explanatory. A part of a song of which band members place their instruments down and dance. It is not uncommon to find a drum solo during this time.

▪Company Fronts - A resting position. The band stands in a designated area. This can be used during shows, mostly for majorette features. A good example of this position is here

Just an added note, it is not uncommon for the director to say "one more time" and then end up doing it 3 or 4 more times. It's all a matter of how well people cooperate and do a good job while practicing.

Ａｂｏｕｔ Ｂａｎｄ Ｃａｍｐ：

Band Camp commonly takes place around mid-August and lasts for usually 2 or 3 weeks. The first week is memorizing/learning the music, the second week is learning places, and the third is practicing the movements and finalizing positions.

A normal show would usually have 1 or 2 majorette features. The rest are where the band plays. Meanwhile, a band festival has more, usually 4 or 5 features, and 8 or so songs in total. This allows for an even performance between the drill team and the showband.
Features usually contain the band standing in home position ( in organized lines ) with the drill team preforming in the front.
