we aren't human, and the humans know that.
the government makes sure neither of us forgets.

we are shifters, "humans" capable of shape shifting into animals. we are free creatures that are in tune with nature and our animal spirits.

..at least, that's what we used to be.

now we are lap dogs, working for the government with no other options. we are bound by collars and leashes, controlled by the ruthless humans we were so naive to trust. we do their dirty work, shift in cages, and get pricked by needles. at the end of the day, we are pushed back into the small areas called "communities," places designed specifically for our shifter species. never have we been separated before, but now we live in areas with shifters similar to ours and cannot interact with other shifter groups in the communities. (example: all feline shifters go in the feline community, and cannot talk to bird shifters unless in a human enviorment, nor cannot go into any other community than the feline community.) we are literally suffering from the shocks of the collars around our necks whenever we do something "out of hand," which includes shifting without permission.

almost all of us have given up, but word has spread that has given us some hope. there are new communities forming around the world, ones where shifters and animals coexist. they call these new communities "villages," and say the villages are part of a "kingdom." only a few shifters know about the villages, but no one knows what the "kingdom" is. all we know is that we want to be a part of the kingdom, and that we will have to fight with the ones who held our leashes for the past thirty years to get there.

● no cussing. if you must, star out the vowels.

Personality: Although Kya may be very
quiet, once she trusts someone, she
opens up. She is very loyal to her
friends and those she loves, and if
they are threatened, she will do
anything to stand up for them and
protect them. She really love the
outdoors and running,but as a lab
rat, she doesn't get much of that.
Most of her life consists of being
in a lab being poked and prodded.
She hates closed spaces,her living
quarters (if that's what you want to
call them) make her very
uncomfortable. She also loves to
sketch, so when she does have
access to something to draw with
and something to draw on, she
takes the rare opportunity to create

or in this case, person of the dagger.
She never knew that her name would
ever become so fitting. Then she was
roped into doing to government's work.
It started out fine. She didn't feel any
kind of guilt. Relaying messages to and
from, spying on people. To her it was
just work, until the resistance showed
up. Until that talk of the kingdom, a
place where their kind could be free.
Then it struck her that she might be the
government's puppet forever. She felt
like a traitor. She finds herself terribly
conflicted in her emotions, yet too
scared to go against the government.

basil is shy and a bit weird. he keeps to himself and goes through life as if he has to, instead of like he wants to. the boy sees beauty in everything, and tends to want to enjoy it all on his own. he makes up a lot of unusual metaphors for things that would really only make sense to him alone. basil has been told that he's naive, so he doesn't try to get into any relationships, or even friendships. he's pretty self contious about his looks, and always keeps his head down and walks in long strides as if he's avoiding someone. in reality, he's avoiding everyone. he seems to he a bit of a rebel, and finds himself longing to cross borders into other communities, wanting to explore nature and the other animals. he always shifts into his animal, because he prefers being able to run fast, and isn't very wary about consequences of shifting often. he's curious about other animals, but not as much humans.

basil lives with his aunt, who is also a bobcat shifter. when he was a child, his mother was going to put him up for adoption, but his aunt took him in instead, knowing that he would be safer with another shifter of the same species, as his father who was a bobcat shifter left the picture before basil was born, and his mother was a lynx shifter. basil takes after his father, and is trying to find him to reunite with him, but hasn't had any luck. basil is an only child.

Ruby is very much like the animal that she has the ability to shift into. She is intelligent, graceful, and very much a free spirit, or at least she dearly wants to be. She is a relentless optimist and always somehow manages to find the good in a situation, which is quite the feat, concidering where she was born and has lived all her life, and what she has to endure every day, being gawked at by thousands of tourists. One good thing that has come of her life on display is that she has no fear whatsoever of being in front of many, many people, and the gift of entertaining a crowd with ease. She is also a fairly good orator, when she does have the chance to speak with her fellow shifters, and may be able to convince them that the time is coming to attempt an escape.
However, like everyone, Ruby is not perfect. She is often as stubborn as a mule, and constantly has the scientists and the other humans who are keeping them prisoner trying to keep her in line, often harshly. She has many bruises and scars to show for this, and although she might lay off right after a punishment, they don't deter her for long. Also, she often tends to overestimate her own strenths and abilities, and gets herself into trouble by not being able to get out of a situation that she realized too late was too much for her to handle. This also makes her sometimes make rushed decisions, or not think them through properly, despite her intelligence.
