^^ You ask people with equids if you could use a breeding slot of theirs to get your first equid. If they let you, they'll give you permission quotes. When the artists open up for breedings, you fill out the form found on the breeding page (see page 1 for link) and you PM them your form and voila! instant foal.

Don't get discouraged. it seems to take everyone a little while. Try long enough, and you'll get one one day.
