PART 12
Mystic's shoulder slammed hard into the dirt. She winced as the rest of her body followed.
"Again. Get up." Black snarled.
Mystic stood up and shook the dirt off.
"I don't understand how I'm supposed to learn this if you don't teach me."
"This is how everyone learns, city girl, again."
Mystic growled deep in her throat. The only instruction Black had given her was to try to knock him off balance. Every time she tried she either missed or ended up in the dirt. Black stood facing her, semi crouched and showing his teeth. Mystic watched him for a minute, trying to find a week spot, then charged. Black waited until the last second then dodged her attack by stepping sideways, then slamming into her shoulder, sending her flying into the dirt again. This time he moved over her, his teeth grabbing the fur around her throat for a second before letting go.
"See? I could kill you that easily. And so could any other wolf you try to fight. Get up. Staying down that long means death. If you're going to get knocked down, at least get up quickly."
Mystic heaved herself to her feet again.
"Maybe it would help if you explained to me what it is that I should be doing, oh great one?"
"Well, what you're doing isn't working, and you keep trying the same thing every time. So...maybe something different?"
"Like what?"
Black huffed and turned to walk away. Mystic charged at him but he was too fast. He spun around, all teeth, snarling and snapping in her face. She backed away and he lunged forward and grabbed one of her front legs, then let go.
"Again, I could have killed you. You let anyone get a hold of your front leg and you might as well be dead. They'll crush it with one bite and leave you helpless."
"I get it. I could be killed easily, but isn't the point of this to teach me something?"
Black glared at her, his ice blue eyes staring straight into hers. She met his glare with one of her own and he snarled before looking away.
"Diesel!" he barked.
A wolf with marked with shaded of brown and gray came away from the rest of the fighters and loped towards Black. As he got closer Mystic could see his paws and the tip of his tail were white. The darker brown on his back made marks that looked like triangles and his eyes were light green.
"Yes Black?"
"City Girl here says she needs to see how to fight. The way I teach isn't working for her. So, I thought I could be your practice partner this morning."
"O-okay." Diesel stuttered. Mystic could see his brief hesitation and could understand why. Black was bigger than he was. Black was bigger than most of the wolves in the pack that Mystic had seen. She wondered how he had gotten so big being a wild wolf. She made a mental note to ask Nitro.
"Ready? Go." Black snarled.
Mystic watched as Diesel adopted the same half crouched pose as Black as the two wolves faced each other, snarling and growling. They moved in a slow circle, both of them facing each other but neither one moving closer. All of a sudden, almost too fast for Mystic to see, Black lunged for one of Diesel's front legs. His teeth snapped on air as Diesel leaped up and back, away from Black's snapping jaws. As soon as he landed he launched himself forward again, taking advantage of the fact that Black's head was down. He grabbed a hold of the fur behind Black's neck. Black twisted around and snapped at Diesel but Diesel kept himself out of range and pulled hard, pulling Black off balance. As Black's shoulder hit the dirt Diesel lunged to grab his throat but Black was too fast. He kicked Diesel hard with both back feet and sent him flying. Black jumped up and faced Diesel (who was already up).
"Nice work." He said as he shook off and stood up, signaling the end of their practice. "You would have had me had you come for my throat from behind so I couldn't kick you."
"Ah, thanks Black."
"You're welcome. Go ahead back to group."
Diesel ran back to join the other fighters and Black turned to Mystic.
"Well, did that help you City Girl?"
"Yes, it did actually. You forget that I've never fought with anything. I've never bit anything. Aggression was not allowed where I come from. I never even remember play fighting with other dogs. I have to learn all of this."
"Right. Because you are the very first city dog I've ever done this with. Gia, Gage, Twist? They all came here as trained fighting machines. You're wrong city girl, I don't forget. I just don't care. And you know why I don't care? Because it doesn't matter."
Black turned and walked away leaving her alone. She watched him go and sighed. He was right. She wasn't the only one who had come here knowing nothing. She wasn't sure she was ever going to make any progress or fit in at all, especially if she kept opening her big mouth. She sat for a minute and then got up to join Diesel and the rest of the fighters for group practice. She hoped if she kept her mouth shut that she might learn something.
