PART 9
Inga’s ears drooped at Mystic’s comment. Mystic tilted her head.
“What’s wrong?”
Inga shook her head.
“Oh, nothing. Sorry. Let’s get going. I’m sure Spring and Twist will be happy to meet you. So will Autumn.”
Mystic followed Inga as she led the way to where Spring and Twist lived. Max hadn’t been kidding when he said it was by the river. They walked down a hill that was shaded by lots of trees and ended up at a flat spot that was literally right next to the river. Mystic saw three wolves down by the river. One she assumed as Autumn because the dog was about the same colors as Fall; deep reds fading to a golden yellow on her legs, chest and stomach. Her tail curled up over her back. Another wolf was what Mystic thought was pure white. It wasn’t until they got closer that she could see the very faint lime green swirls on its coat. The other was various shades of brown and if it wasn’t for the swirl marks on its shoulders and back legs he could have passed as a wild wolf.
“Hi everyone! I brought Mystic down to meet you guys. Max found her this morning.”
All three wolves turned to face them, tails wagging. It was the brown wolf who spoke first.
“Hello! Welcome to the pack. My name is Twist. This is my mate, Spring and our friend Autumn.”
“Hi, nice to meet everyone. I’m Mystic.”
“Wow, your coat is such a pretty shade of blue…you’re almost gray” Spring said softly. Mystic smiled and looked into the most vivid green eyes she had ever seen.
“Thank you. Your eyes are amazing.” Spring leaned against Twist, hiding her face in his shoulder. Mystic turned to Autumn.
“I met your brother Fall this morning. He’s such a cute puppy.”
“Ah, I assumed if you met Max you met Fall, they are attached at the hip. Fall is shy at first, but don’t worry, once he gets to know you he never shuts up.”
“I don’t mind, I think they are both cute. I wasn’t around puppies much when I lived in the city, so I find them amusing.”
“Well, maybe you can help us watch them sometimes.” Inga suggested “After all, you’ll be expected to find your place in the pack soon enough, you might as well try different things.”
“Sure, I’d like that. What do you all do, if you don’t mind me asking?”
“I’m one of the hunters.” Twist answered. “Spring is training with Haven to maybe be a healer, she sometimes helps with the pups as well.”
“You already know Inga and I watch the puppies. We also just pitch in whenever help is needed. I’ve been on a few hunts, but it isn’t really my thing.”
Spring, who was still leaning against Twist, smiled when he mentioned her being a healer. Mystic noticed.
“Spring, how did you start to learn about being a healer? Haven really helped me last night, I think its really cool.”
“Oh…I just…wanted to try something different so I asked her if she thought she could teach me. She said she would try. I just started a few weeks ago in Haven’s spare time. We had to get permission from Black first.”
Mystic roller her eyes at the mention of Black’s name. She didn’t get what the big deal was about him.
“Why is Black so powerful around here? It seems to me he’s just a jerk.”
Autumn laughed at her comment but Inga’s ears drooped again and she mumbled something about having to go back to check on the pups.
“Do you mind if Autumn walks back with you Mystic?”
“Um…no, not at all. Are you okay?”
“Yea, I’m fine. I’ll see you later.”
She muttered and then took off up the hill at a lope. Mystic watched her go then turned back to Autumn.
“Did I say something wrong?”
“No, not really. Not that you would know anyhow. Inga had a crush on Black for a long time.”
“Oh geez, now I feel really stupid.”
“Its not your fault, you just got here. Anyhow, she approached him about being his mate and he turned her down…and wasn’t exactly nice about it. She should have known not to approach him. Alpha’s choose their mate, not the other way around.”
“Still, he didn’t have to be a jerk.”
“No, he didn’t. But..Black is very focused on making the pack stronger. I think he doesn’t want emotions to get in the way of that.”
“How does he plan on making the pack stronger?”
“Well…Actually, that’s probably something that Nitro and Black should fill you in on. I’m sure they will discuss the whole point of the pack with you once you have settled in more.”
“Yea, we really shouldn’t tell you any more than we already have. Its not our place.” Twist said in agreement with Autumn. Mystic sighed and was about to ask something else when a long, loud howl broke the silence. Twist lurched up from the position he had been sitting in and sounded and answering howl that was equally as loud. He turned to Spring and Autumn.
“You guys get inside, and don’t come out until I get back. Mystic, go with them. Hurry up.”
Spring and Autumn quickly hustled into the cave, Mystic hesitated.
“What’s going on?”
“I’m not sure. That howl is a danger signal howl. Everyone who is not a hunter or fighter is supposed to get in a shelter. The hunters and fighters join whoever signaled the first howl. This time it was Black. Just get inside, its not safe to stay outside.” He explained in a hurry then turned and sprinted up the hill. Mystic hesitated then sprinted after him.
