[Apologies for the short chapter, but I thought it'd be good to drop off here and I wanted to post this today.]
Aspen stayed up all that night and into the early morning hours. Beckett had insisted that someone should keep guard. There had to be something out there, especially since what happened with Olivia. So Aspen had volunteered, and no one else did, except for Atlas, but Rose had managed to whisk him away to help her with a “very important project” (as she had put it) before he could volunteer to help.
Now Aspen sat, hunched against a wall four feet from Olivia, dagger dangling by two fingers on her left hand, and on her right lay a large stick. Her eyelids seemed to weigh at least a thousand pounds, and the only thing on her mind were ways to keep herself awake. Her gaze snaked over to Olivia, who was sleeping fitfully, battling invisible terrors.
“What could have happened to you?” Aspen wondered aloud, chewing on the inside of her cheek out of pure habit. A bad habit that she was trying hard to break.
“I was just wondering the same thing.”
At the sound of the familiar, warm voice, Aspen turned. Atlas sat behind her, smiling.
“Do you always sneak up on people like that?” She questioned in mock annoyance.
“Well, if you were paying attention, you would have seen – or heard me. Good thing I’m not an assassin. I could’ve slit your throat, and right now, instead of being sassy, you’d be lying on the floor, collecting flies, and your eyes would be little x’s.”
“Oh, shut up, you. You try staying up for, like, nine hours while everyone else sleeps.” Aspen muttered, but she had to smile at the visual that he had planted in her mind. “And wipe that silly Cheshire Cat grin off you face.” She swung her dagger lazily in a half-circle. Even though she was far from him, Atlas ducked.
“Naughty girl. You could have killed me.” He teased. “Didn’t your parents teach you any manners at all?”
“Don’t have any.” Aspen stuck out her tongue.
“Yeah, you do. So do I. And when we get out of this place, we’ll find them.”
“Yeah, maybe,” said Aspen gloomily. A long silence settled between them before either of them spoke again. “So, what do you think happened?”
Atlas shrugged. “I dunno. You seem to think it was an inside job, though.”
“That’s a stupid way of putting it, but … maybe.” Aspen poked the floor with the stick. “Wait, how did you know that that's what I thought?”
“I heard you accusing Hayden.” He answered simply.
“You did? How? Were you spying?”
“No!” Atlas raised his hands defensively. “You guys weren’t exactly being quiet. We were in the same room, remember.”
“Oh.”
“You were pretty harsh with him.” Atlas mentioned, attempting to sound nonchalant.
“I was not!” Aspen defended herself. “I just … okay, maybe I was a little, but he’s just so … annoying.”
“Annoying? How so?”
“He’s so clingy.”
At that, Atlas started to giggle.
“Stop laughing,” Aspen demanded, crossing her arms. “It’s not funny.”
“Yeah it is.” He grinned, poking her shoulder, managing to squeeze a smile out of her.
“Well, yeah, but I—” Aspen cut herself off. She let out a small squeak, clapping a hand over her mouth. She nudged Atlas with her elbow, nodding towards the door that was not open moments before, but now hung fully ajar. There, piercing the infinite darkness, were two sets of beady red eyes.
“Looks like we have company.”
