airyanna offered him a smile-- this time, when he was looking. and it widened when he asked if she needed any help finding anything. now, there had been many shifters around that day, and it was quite unusual that they were especially near the same general area of the city. she wanted to try something. "actually, you can help me, mr. i work here." airy grabbed her cup and stood, referring to the boy in front of her (as she did not know his name). after taking a quick glance around, she turned back to him. "i'm looking for books on... the kingdom. that is, if you're familiar with the term." the girl shrugged, but even humans spoke of the kingdom. if shifters hadn't heard of it from their families, usually they picked it up from the streets as humans told stories about it to one another. so this man would probably know about it, shifter or not. though, there was one thing she was looking for, and so she met his gaze. if her assumptions were correct, her words would make him start to realize what she was... if he was a shifter too, of course.

someone's voice came and colby looks towards the counter to see a blonde boy behind it. he looks as if he is waiting on colby, which helps colby register that the boy is ready to take his order. without needing to think, the stoat replies, "yeah, i'll have black coffee but with caramel." he doesn't know the proper name for the coffee he always gets (or even if it has one) but he wouldn't use it even if he did. the boy before him smells strongly of feline, causing colby's nose to scrunch in displeasure. "great.. another cat shifter.."

Basil smiled and nodded at the stoat shifter, thinking that it was a little odd of a combination. He wasn't one himself for black coffee, and liked his light and sweet. It wasn't as bad to smell the scent of dark black coffee as much as it was to drink the bitter drink. He took a Styrofoam cup from the stack and pored ready-made black coffee into the cup. It steamed in his face as he bent down to get the caramel shot from the shelf below the counter, and finished up his coffee as his eyes scanned around the coffeehouse, and back to his customer. He looked very familiar, and tried to think back to where he saw the shifter before. Maybe he'd been in the shop before. Basil snapped on a lid on the beverage and pulled the cap from the marker, quickly doodling the Kingdom, with the words underneath that he usually wrote. As he put the cap back on the marker and set it down, he finally remembered where he say the boy before. He was the grandson of the author of the book Break Free! He waited for the boy's cash as he mulled over the newfound revelation.

Wren raised his eyebrows at her. "The... kingdom?" He repeated. He'd heard of it, of course he had, everyone had. Only rumors, though. He knew that it was off limits, somewhere that no one one but special people like government officials could go. He wasn't even sure if it was real, but he knew that, if it was, it was some sort of safe place for shifters. "The kingdom," he repeated again, as if he was confirming what she'd said. "Yeah, I think so. It would be in the adult reading section, under k." He continued. "I can show you." He dumped the books onto a nearby cart to be sorted later, then turned around and led her to the section that it would most likely be in. No wonder, he found it right in the k's, far back in the shelf as if someone was trying to hide it. He reached back and pulled it out, looking over the cover. It just so happened to be the book published by Eli Rogen, Break Free. It was quite vandalized, the cover and pages torn, filled with statements written in pen such as, "the kingdom is fake" or, "what is the government hiding from us". He hesitantly handed the book, obviously in bad condition, to her. It didn't seem like many people appreciated the novel. He realized, remembering the boy whom he'd talked to earlier, that the author was the same Eli Rogen who was punished for publishing it. "Uh, here you go," he said, sticking his hands in his pockets.

Zach smiled. "Okay, cool, Rilli." He said, using her name that he'd just found out. He glanced over at the group of people. They seemed very normal. "Maybe," he shrugged. "I don't know." There was an awkward silence following his answer, and he stared down at his hands nervously. He bit his lip, having nothing to say. He looked up when she asked him about his community. "Oh, um, no, not really. There's quite a few people in the antlers community, but I don't very many of them." He replied. Truthfully, he didn't know any of them. He didn't care to get to know them, or didn't feel like talking to them, or sometimes just plain disliked them. Maybe it was because they were all so... alike. He'd never met another shifter who wasn't some kind of four-legged, hoofed herbivore; to meet a member of the 'seafood' community, no less, that was interesting. The awkward silence returned until he decided to say something. "So, have you heard of this... kingdom... place?" He asked suddenly. "I have, just street rumors, but I've heard its a place for shifters to... well, I'm not sure exactly. Live without being looked down on by humans? Whatever it is, I'm sure it's better than here, or in any small community." He explained. "I feel like a caged animal, sometimes. Why do they keep us away from humans because we're different? We don't have the same rights or privileges..." He stopped, fearing that he was talking too much. "That's my opinion, at least." He added.

airy followed the boy as he led her to the "adult reading section, under k", taking multiple sips of her coffee as she went. upon arriving at their destination, the girl watched with much interest as he fished the book from the depths of the book shelf, cocking her head just gently at the appearance of this book. at first glance, you'd have guessed it had a near encounter with a shredder, or something of the sort. "wow." but as the book was handed to her, she took it gleefully, yet another smile arising on her lips as she recognized the title and author almost instantly. "eli rogen. of course this would be the only book here about that magical place where shifters can be themselves... and, well, free." airy whispered, though loud enough for lawrence to hear if he was paying any attention to her. flipping through the book, she scrunched up her nose at the mildew-y stench that wafted up to greet her, but was pleased that the library had this story. "thanks for showing me the way, mr. i work here." handing the boy back the reading material, airyanna took another sip of her drink, eyeing him. "may i ask for your real name?" it was in no good manner to go about calling him a name he did not go by, so she decided to question him.

Lawrence watched her smile as she inspected the book, evidently recognizing the author. His eyes grew wide as he heard her say something about shifters being free... so that's what the kingdom is? How did this girl know about shifters, anyways? He blinked when she asked him his name. "It's Lawrence, but I prefer Wren." He replied. He was quiet for a moment, then decided to take a gamble and ask her about her knowledge. "You're... not a human, are you?" He inquired in a low voice, leaning against the shelf. He looked at her, expecting an answer. He didn't have to be very worried about anyone overhearing, considering the library was empty, and he wasn't even sure where his boss was half the time. "Miss, uh...?" He asked expectantly, suddenly remembering to in turn ask her about her own name.

airy nodded slowly, glancing down at her straw. she would remember that- lawrence. or, wren. wren was preferred. after the quiet stretched out for moments on end, she was about to speak when he did. his words made her head snap up, and all she could do was laugh, debating on whether or not to see his reaction when she lied and asked him what he meant by that, or to tell him the truth. she decided on playing it nice. "no, i'm not. i'm actually a shifter... buuut i'm pretty sure you're aware of what that is." airy gave him a wink, before continuing. "airyanna. airyanna crowns. but please, wren: call me airy." the girl paused again, before briefly pressing her fingertips to her forehead and shaking her head. "oh, sorry. i'm a purple-crowned fairywren." she pressed her lips together, before taking another drink and waiting for him to respond to her unorganized semi-greeting thing.

It didn't take Wren by much of a surprise that the girl - Airy, it was, apparently - wasn't in fact human, after the hints she'd been giving him. He paused, before realizing that she was waiting for him to in turn say that he was a shifter. So badly he wanted to say something cool, like, I'm a grey wolf, or, I'm a mountain lion, but no. "I, er, I'm a shifter, too." He replied casually, avoiding telling her what he was, then running his fingers through his black hair to hide his embarrassment. Why did he, of all people, have to be a blasted whale? There was nothing cool about being a whale, for goodness sake! If that wasn't enough, their community was given the stupid nickname 'seafood', of all things. I can never have enough shame, he thought woefully. "Er, um..." He pulled up his sleeve, glancing at the watch that he... didn't have. I am going to get in big trouble if anyone notices that. he thought, nervously covering his bare wrist with his sleeve again. Not only had he neglected to remember his sunglasses, which would be useful, but he'd forgotten his watch, which was necessary. Nobody really checked for your watch that indicated that you were a shifter, but you sure did not want to be caught without it. Wren looked around, finding no clock on the walls. "Do you... know what time it is?" He asked. Of course she knew what time it was, he told himself, she has a watch, too. Or maybe she doesn't, he wondered. Don't flyers have to wear vests? Whichever one it was, Wren would not be getting a glimpse of it, as both were hidden by her sweatshirt. He shuffled his feet nervously, pushing the distraction out of his head. So much for his 'cool guy' act. "My break is at twelve, do you, uh, want to get a coffee or something?" He offered. He wasn't personally one to drink coffee, but he'd make an exception for this girl. Not only was she a shifter, but she was, he had to admit, kinda pretty, too. He raised an eyebrow, waiting for her reply.

airyanna mixed her iced coffee with her straw, nodding slowly once again. she wondered vaguely what his shift was, but she could tell he didn't want to share. or at least, not right now. so she gave him the relief he was bound to be looking for and kept her trap closed, until he- wren- asked about the time after bringing up his sleeve and finding out he'd left his watch in his home in his community. "wouldn't wanna be caught without that, would you?" the girl teased, knowing very well that he was probably thinking the same thing right about then. honestly, she often slept with her watch on. no matter how uncomfortable it was, she also had the flipping vest, so why not just add to the uncomfortableness if you're already going to have a rough night anyways? lifting her arm, she glanced at the time. "11:48." airy noticed him shuffle his feet a bit, and was just about to thank him for the help and leave when he spoke again. his words brought yet another of her endless smiles to her lips, but this one showed her pearly whites. even though she already had coffee, she could use another, or just get one of their small breakfasty meals. usually coffeehouses had them. "i'd love to. i can wait around for twelve minutes." airy wiggled her fingers in a goodbye, planning on meeting up with him somewhere in roughly twelve- now eleven- minutes, and spun on her heels, saving him the awkwardness of trying to get back to work for his remaining time. she headed off towards a small reading area, and although there were plenty of chairs and such, made herself comfortable on her belly on the floor, lifting her legs and swinging them back and forth. it was her usual reading position. and so she opened the book, beginning to read the story she had read so many times already as she waited for the eleven minutes to be killed.

❝There might be a lot of fish in the sea,
But tell me, are there any other squid?❞

she watched as zach seemingly mimicked her nervous behaviors. the playing with his hands, the flitty eyes, the strange silences. in a way, that almost made her relax a bit more. she sat back in her chair and crossed her legs, feeling a little less on edge and more comfortable. wow, she hadn't felt this way around someone else in a while. well, maybe that was because she hadn't been around anyone else for a while.

when zach mentioned the kingdom, rilli's gaze, which had been fixated on a painting in the wall, quickly met his. she listened to his point of view, nodding all the while. "i completely agree with you," she started, fumbling to find words. "i've heard all the street rumors too...and i think i heard them over there mentioning the kingdom, which is why i'm guessing they're shifters too," she continued, motioning with his chin to the other side of the coffee shop. "i don't know whether it's a real place or not...," she added, her voice trailing, "and if it is a real place, whether it's like how the rumors portray it." she shrugged.

another minute of silence. "so, zach," she said, using his name for the first time in conversation. "um, do you like your shift? i mean, the fact that you can be a deer? i guess it must be kind of useful for running away and hiding, no?" she quickly jumbled out, trying to keep the conversation flowing. oh, you're so stupid, rilli, she thought to herself, as she kept her half smile on her face and nervously laughed. what a stupid, stupid question. who in their right mind would want to be any kind of shifter out here?
