They cleared their throat loudly and ducked their head as they picked up a blank canvas and rested it against the easel, setting aside the other painting. That could wait. "Ah, I want to try something, but I doubt you're up for it." they kept their head down as they set up the paints and grabbed a handful of brushes.
Pol grabbed a nearby stool and settled down next to the easel, curiously examining the tools and paints Váli chose. "I'm game if you are," he told her. "What are you gonna try?" Pol scooted forward, nearly losing his balance on the stool. Gripping his seat, he held his breath, calming himself down.

There were quite a few stools in the studio, most of them covered in dried paint from earlier projects. Váli moved one of the paint-covered stools in front of the easel and sat down, their feet settling on the small bar. "I..would it be okay if I did a portrait of you? As a gift?" they asked quietly and swirled the paint brush around in the mug of water.

Pol froze, shocked. He definitely did expect THAT. "Uh- I um- wha, yes! I mean, sure, sure. I don't mind at all." He quickly sat down on the stool, slightly jarred. "Where do you want me?" He couldn't believe that she wanted to paint him.

They looked up at him, brush still in hand as they stirred the water absentmindedly. "I just want to make it up to you for the pot." Váli murmured. "I kind of sprung that on you, didn't I? You don't have to if you don't want to." they assured him and swung their legs.

Pol grinned. "Oh yeah. You don't owe me anything." He wiggled his nose at her. "Though, I would love to have a bit of your art." He shifted on the stool, scooting forward. "Do you need me to pose?"

Well, they could still consider it a thank you gift to him, even if he didn't consider it to be one. They thought for a moment, but in the end shook their head. "Maybe just sit up straight and smile, genuinely, for me?" Váli suggested as they snatched a pencil from where they were kept by the foot of the easel and started to make a base sketch. "You'll have to hold still for a while, you know." they reminded him.

Pol nodded, stretching his back and getting into position. He sat up straight then blinked slowly. He studied Váli's face, follow the traces of time with his eyes. His heart began to swell and he suddenly found that he was genuinely smiling, just as she'd asked. His eyes crinkled and his face never felt tired. Pol felt as if he could sit here forever, smiling and falling even more in love. He watched Váli's movements and marveled at the obvious talent and skill she portrayed as she began the painting.

Váli always hated the basic sketches. Even though they knew that he would only see the paint that went over the light outline, it still bothered them. With a frustrated sigh, they sketched his nose and plump lips, and then dipped the brush into the color palette. They kept many palettes; they were all for the different part of the paintings they did. This particular palette was for skin tone. Their tongue stuck out of the corner of their mouth as they started, fixed on getting the jawline correct.

Pol sat quietly, watching Váli's movements. She seemed frustrated.
I wonder why it frustrates her... Pol decided that he would ask her about it sometime. Váli loved art, but at the same time it seemed like she couldn't stand it. Pol put it out of his mind for the time being. He sifted slightly in his seat and continued to smile at Váli.
