Tick, tock, tick, tock. The clock, it taunted her. With her face pressed into her plush pillow, Luka released a quite audible groan of disgust and spun quickly on her bed, glaring at the clock on the wall on the opposite side of her. Had she even slept at all? It didn't feel like it, not with the sleep in her eyes and the very visible yawn that crept up to her lips what seemed like every ten seconds. With that, Luka came to the conclusion that she hadn't gotten any sleep, and if she had -- it was most definitely not enough, but, duty called and if she wanted to get to Starbucks on time to get to work, Luka needed to get up. Now.
Groaning, she pushed the covers off of her body and physically shivered to the cold that pricked at her skin, pulling her skin up into a fit of goosebumps. Feet touching the floor, Luka hugged her arms as she unbended her knees and stood up before heading towards her bathroom to commit her daily routine to get ready for the day. Brushing her hair, her teeth, applying eyeliner, mascara, and putting her mess of brown curls into a lazy mess of a bun. Quite the daunting tasks for someone who could barely bring themselves to open their eyes. It was a shame that unlike her natural species, Luka didn't get to lounge around all day in a serious of naps, like a typical house cat. Nope. Instead, she had to get up and apply her human side to the world around her. How... annoying.
After completing her morning tasks, Luka exited the bathroom and stepped out into the small living room of her apartment. Pulling open the drapes that covered her window from the peeping eyes of the world, Luka stared out at the buzzing city. The sun was slowly starting to rise, causing Luka to slightly glare at how early she had actually managed to wake up. It was what -- like.. 6 am? Who the hell got up at 6 am? Not Luka, if she'd had a choice. Luka didn't think anyone would get up at 6 if they had a choice. Sleeping was just... too precious. Turning away from the window, Luka rubbed her head and approached the door, sliding on her shoes. She at least didn't have to hear the annoying commands of her parents, not since she'd moved out after an incident that occurred between her and her mother. A rather rough "cat" fight, if I do say so myself. Her mother ended up throwing her out, and disowning her. Not that Luka cared, her mother never really fully appreciated Luka for who she was. She believed Luka was a screw up, and took it upon herself to remind Luka of it every day. Stuff like that goes to your head, and Luka didn't need to deal with it anymore. She no longer had to feel like she was a disappointment. Nope. She was just.. Luka.
(wow i said her name ALOT in that paragraph oops)
After a few more minutes of procrastination, Luka exited her apartment and headed out into the cold. She hugged her coat tighter to her body, noticing her breath visible in the cold air. She hated the cold, literally, all she wanted to do all day was nap in the the warmth of the sun, let it soak into her fur. But she couldn't do that, now could she? Nope. So here she was, finding herself surrounded by annoying humans, walking down the sidewalk with her hood pulled up to protect her fro the cold. She glared at anyone who dared make eye contact. She hated almost all human company, they bothered her. Their amount of freedoms compared to hers made her just want to show them who was boss. Luka was sure that all shifters felt the same way. Humans just made them uncomfortable.
Upon walking down the street for approximately thirty minutes, Luka finally came upon the Starbucks she claimed as her job and stepped behind the counter. She grabbed her apron and slid it on without really speaking to anyone, just beginning to finish up the coffee orders and listen to the conversations around her, paying attention to other peoples lives instead of dwelling on her own.

"sorry for the slight exaggeration." he drawled, itching to just stuff his headphone back into his ear and walk away. how he managed to always get caught up with other people and their lives is a mystery to him, an annoyance. can't he just do his thing and be alone or does the power above not want him to be at peace? no matter how rude he could be, he wouldn't just walk away.. especially when he can have some fun with someone like thranduil, the perfect prey to colby's sarcasm. he could see a slight twitch in the man's expression and almost smirked (almost) at the other man's displeasure. at least they had something in common right now. "why would you try to make conversation in a place that is supposed to be near silent? unless you're one of those rioting types?" the brunette boy questioned, not completely brushing the man off but trying. he so wanted to say the words children should not hear to make the man leave but felt that to be pointless since both of them are in the library for books, and will not leave without the ones they came for. colby noticed the librarian glaring at them and quickly glared back, growling under his breath.

Thranduil took the hint that the boy wanted to be left alone. "Alright. I understand you are not necessarily interested in conversation right now. I'll let you go, you can get your book and leave and I can go read. Will that be satisfactory?" He asked, slightly sarcastically. He sighed. Clearly, this was not going to be a good morning for him. Then again... when were there ever really good mornings in his miserable life? He wanted to go home and sleep now, the mere idea of interaction making him want to collapse. He didn't have any energy this morning, especially not for a sarcastic kid who was sassing him and trying to be discreet about it. Well, it wasn't working, and Thranduil was extremely irritated about it.
He almost turned on his heel and left. The idea of just ignoring anything else the boy had to say had entered his mind and tried to convince him that he should do so, but Thranduil was more controlled than that, he wouldn't give in to petty anger. That just wasn't how he worked.
Gah, sorry this is so short! I've got a bit of a struggle with my muse now too)

║ the blonde girl gave her friend a playfully dirty look as he ushered her to a nearby table, not really giving her much of an option as he pushed her towards it. she plopped down in the chair that he pulled out for her, one of his rare gentleman traits, and gave him a knowing smirk about just that. she always teased him about how he couldn't be both a flirt and a gentleman, but he tried to prove her wrong at times. at his first question, she sort of shrugged. "i had the morning shift at the store today, since there's a new girl that diane(the owner) is trying to train." she explained to him, which sucked to be honest. she normally had all day shifts, but some stupid teenage human girl got in the way of her. if that became a regular thing, she qould be more than a little miffed. but diane had promised it was a one time thing. in a second, however, at his next words, her mood went from ehh to sour. her fist clenched so tightly around the cup that it could pop at any second, and she even went so far as to growl lightly at him, her eyes narrowing. "the kingdom is a load of poppycock that gives shifters hope but does nothing but destroy families." she snarled out at him, knowing exactly that he is asking about it. he doesn't know that her parents left to find it; all anyone knows is that they abandoned her. thats it.

so, thats why he entered the library, an uncommon place for him, and headed over to the 'nonfiction mythology' section, contradictory name ey, for any legends about this kingdom place.

Lawrence watched the young man approach him; he looked the same age as himself. Lawrence had a pretty bad nose, but he was not absolutely unable to detect scents like a certain musk deer, so he could, faintly, sense that something was different about this boy. He blinked, coming out of his thoughts as the fellow shifter - something small, maybe a rodent? - asked him for his dad's book. He decided not to answer the first question; he had, truthfully, been working there for around a month, and it was not a very hard job. But he pondered the second statement. His... dad's book? "Your dad's book?" Wren repeated, confused. "Can you give me his name?" He asked, trying to be polite. He'd seen the boy talking to some tall fellow, and though he couldn't hear their conversation, he did hear Colby mocking the other man under his breath. And rudely walk away from him. And rudely listen to music while talking to him. Man, the whale-shifter thought. If I knew him outside of work, we would not get along. Wren couldn't say that in the first month of his job he hadn't gotten angry or impatient at customers, especially elderly people or teenagers. He glanced around, noticing a few other people in the library; and gulped when he saw his boss staring at him coldly. She always did that, and it was extremely unnerving.

Basil nodded, now seeing it would make sense for her to be a small, fast-flying bird. He, more then anything, wanted to see her fly one day, and that only motivated him further to spread awareness of their cause. The kingdom, they called it, where shifters were free to run and fly, and work all six hours of the morning shift without being late. It was like a dream, and Basil dreamed it every night. The boy fell back onto his feet and straightened up, once again smoothing wrinkles from his apron before pulling a black Sharpie permanent marker from one of the pockets, after digging through discarded receipts and coins and dollar bills. He pulled the cap from the marker and held it between his teeth, as he stabilized the cup with his left hand. The strong scent of the marker wafted around him, and he scrunched his nose as he finished a doodle of a large castle. Underneath, he wrote, remember the kingdom, with his own seven-digit phone number. Although shifters weren't aloud to have cell-phones, they were still aloud to have land-lines for calls. He popped the cap back onto the Sharpie and slipped it back into his pocket, pushing the sweating drink back to her. "I think it would be safer to talk later. Give me a call later, will you?" Basil whispered, tapping his fingers on the counter. It had become a compulsive thing to do, out of boredom. A line was beginning to form and he smiled as he looked over her shoulder at the impatient human behind her, who seemed like she really did need her coffee. He gave her a kind smile, but his eyes drifted to the outside world, beyond the line and the window. Now he had something to look forward to after work.

airyanna watched curiously as basil stole back her drink, pulling out a sharpie after some rummaging. the girl scrunched up her nose as well: it was all she could do not to make some weird noise because of the horrid stench. but she continued to watch as he swiped the maker back and forth, up and down, and when he returned the wet cup to her she took it gleefully and turned it to gaze at the quick drawing. the castle that everyone seemed to be speaking of... how wonderful it seemed. couldn't all the shifters just be let free, to find their way to that magical place where it was said they were free? the girl caught basil's gaze once more and nodded after reading his note and hearing his hushed words, agreeing fully with his plan. it made her feel giddy to actually have been asked to 'talk later' by someone, and be given a boy's phone number. it wasn't everyday that this happened to a shifter, as it did to some bratty teenaged human girls. and boys. "i will, basil. talk to you soon." she had managed to hide her giddiness away from her voice, but it shown clearly in her eyes. she couldn't help it. seeing basil take a look over her shoulder, airy spun on her heels to give the woman a few quick apologetic words, and after receiving a grunt in return, lowered her head just slightly and exited the line. making sure to be careful and place her hand on the other side of the doodle, the girl took a sip of her iced coffee, smiling just slightly as she pushed open the coffeehouse's door. before stepping outside, though, she took one look back at the boy at the counter, and gave him another gentle grin. it was then she walked outside into the gentle breeze, the bell giving one last chime as the door shut with a soft groan. oh, what to do for a few hours while she awaited the perfect time to call him?

Lawrence raised his eyebrows when he heard the name. "Rogen?" He repeated. He'd heard that name before... wasn't Rogen the guy who'd published a book and was exiled for it? Something like that. "Uh, yeah, I have it." Wren ducked under the counter and rummaged through the stack of reserved books until he found one with 'Daniel Rogen' written on a sticky note. He pulled it out and ran it under the scanner, waiting for the satisfactory beep of approval before pushing it towards Colby. "Here you go," he said, drumming his hands against the flat surface of the countertop. He decided that, while the boy was here, to ask him about his last name. "Uh, Rogen... I think I've heard that name before? Is someone in your family an author?" He inquired curiously.

Basil continued to return the smile even after Airy left, as he took the woman's order. Even as everyone in the line seemed to nag him about everything - how slow he was being, how they needed to get the work, goodness, even the weater - he still had something to smile about. He just nodded along with whatever they were saying, half-heartedly listening. His mind was somewhere else entirely, in the wide, open fields of the Kingdom, running free in the tall grass with other shifters, roaming and slinking like a normal bobcat did, perhaps with a little lavender bird flitting at his side. As he rushed to get all the orders, finally the manager appeared from the back. Basil handed the last customer in line their coffee, he gave the manager a small smile, noticing that she had been even tardier then he was to work that morning. She just shooed him away, and scowled at him as he went back to the boxes of books to be shelved. Once he was back to hiding away behind the shelves, amongst the books, he pulled out all the bills he had gotten for tips. Six one dollar bills, fifty cents, and one five dollar bill from Airy. Basil thanked her under his breath once more, before shoving all of the money back into the pocket of his apron to take out the next book. It was titled, Reaching the Sky, and he thought of a story about a purple-crowned fairy wren, soaring high above the clouds to reach the stars, above all the tree tops and chains that bound her to the vest and the ground. The bell rang once more, but he didn't look up until the customer reached the counter to order a drink.
