"Hey, don't blame me!" Seabreeze meowed good-naturedly. "Beechpaw promised that if I helped her play a trick you, she'd help me play a trick on Clifftail. How could I say no to that?"

Ripplestripe took a deep breath, curling his tail tightly around his paws.

"Yes, that's understandable." Copperberry shook a bit of water from her paw. "But you've being doing very well, all things considered. You should be proud of yourself."

Copperberry's gaze dropped to her sodden paws. "I do, too," she whispered. "But...there's no guarantee we won't be able to go back, right? We just have to wait for the water to go down. Maybe everything will be fine. Maybe nothing will have to change."

Beechpaw mirrored Seabreeze's grin and cuffed Herringpaw over the ear. "You better be good at playing dead!" she told him.

Copperberry nodded in agreement but said nothing.

"You'll see! Come on!" Beechpaw jumped out of the tree hollow and scanned the area for Clifftail.

"Over there!" Seabreeze nodded toward the light brown tom, who was still gathered with Tidestar and a few other warriors. "But maybe we should wait until Tidestar's finished with him."

Cornfur sat snuggled up against Salmonfall and felt relaxed and content for the first time since the hurricane had flooded the forest.
