what is everyones opinion on chrom

chrom is a complete nerd. but he is the most cute nerd and must be protected. he is also the king of all dads.

also i haven't played fe:a for a couple of months up until my b-day a week or so ago. my brother bought me my own copy so i could finally give his back after like. a year. so i decided to play hard/casual instead of a hard/classic game (on his copy, i had been trying to play hard/classic but it gives me such stress because i refuse to let anyone die) and?? does anyone else struggle with recruiting donnel or is that just me. either donnel dies or donnel doesn't level up. i can never remember a time when i didn't at least have to try five times to recruit him and it is the most frustrating thing. /except for maybe one time but that was an outlier

I love Chrom he is amazing! He is one of my more favorite male characters in the game.

let me tell you

i had a really hard time recruiting donnel as well so no problem
but yes i sort of just paired him up with chrom and kept lissa by him 24/7 so whenever he got hurt i could heal him right away. any unit works for pairing up, really. idk why i chose to use chrom. its good to make him fight archers perhaps because they cant attack when youre in front of them. so that means donnel can only be attacked when its the enemies turn. its also good to make him fight lower leveled enemies using swords. ++ you can let donnel go for the finishing attack on enemies with low hp. i had to restart a few times because he died but if you plan your steps carefully and create a safe fighting environment so donnel doesnt get absolutely rekt... it's a tiny bit easier.

my real suffering came in at like paralogue 3 where i had to restart about 10 times rip

I... don't like Chrom lmao

But that's because I've played all the other FE games released in English and Chrom just sorta... fails as a main lead in many regards. Maybe I'm too spoiled on Ike who is such a great character with huge development (and the fact that he's from a poor background NOT a royal and never BECOMES a royal) but Chrom just felt, well, WEAK. I mean the plot needs a lord, that's a staple of the fire emblem series, but there's nothing about Chrom that makes him stand out and he doesn't really CHANGE that much throughout the game. YOU, the avatar, are the one with all the development. The game hinges on YOU and Chrom just felt like background noise half the time. And don't get me started on how stupid the Female Avatar supports are. The male avatar ones are actually pretty nice and get some good character but aRG the female ones annoy me.

I dunno, I like a good, solid, developed character. And Chrom just isn't that. He feels flat in comparison to pretty much everyone else. Ike, Eliwood, Hector, Lyn, the twins, and Marth are all better heroes. And I really think Chrom's weakness comes somewhat from the game design, because none of the other games had an Avatar in the way that FE:A does and in the end you, as the avatar, end up taking the spotlight and the importance. YOU change everything, YOU move the plot forward, HECK YOU ARE THE DANG PLOT. And when it came down to it Chrom just... didn't need to be there for the game to progress, I felt, other than being a plot point because he was of royal blood.

I mean he's not like... a terrible character, he's just flat and suffers from the fact that he isn't that important when you get down to it. None of the other lords have that issue, so it's not entirely Chrom's fault. And I don't HATE him, I just don't really find him that interesting or special.

ALSO I'M EVEN MORE SPOILED BECAUSE OH GOD DOES AWAKENING HAVE HELLA ANTAGONISTS. Or maybe I'm just bias because I married one of them. I'm be bias for a second okay. Yeah. Character development wise Gangrel blows Chrom out of the dang water. Combine both the supports with the avatars, which show both understanding and remorse for his actions AND taking fault instead of pushing the blame off on others AND recognizing that he needs someone to keep him in line and that he's flawed. And the conversation in Summer Scramble with Emm, hooooooly heckie character development it tears me up (in a good way). Gangrel was really well done in how the game handled a fall from grace and instead of recruiting him as just another antagonist you actually do get a polished, well-written character reform.

Now Chrom doesn't have to go through any 'reform' per say, but there's nothing that says that in a story this long, this complicated, and this good that he couldn't have changed. It really struck me in the very last chapter, to be honest, when he makes you PROMISE not to sacrifice yourself. He never learned to deal with loss and sacrifice, he never really took anything from Emm's actions and didn't ever really understand WHY she did it. And he makes the same mistake with you when you go up against a situation that, maybe for the better, you should make a sacrifice. I mean no one will be HAPPY that you left but he never even took the time to see you side of things or how you were feeling about the matter, and that just kinda bugged me in the end. Yeah it's a minor detail but I dunno??

I spend way too much time thinking about things and I'm sorry this is long I just never get to talk about why I don't like Chrom because the fandom loves him lmao

i thought enemies usually go for the units with the lowest stats / level or smth? hp? man i am still figuring out how fe:a works but like. i usually tried to distance themselves out of the enemies range donnel is attacking. also dont give any lissa any weapons and sometimes sacrifice weaponless units for tribute during the enemies move to save donnel lmao. that really sucks tho and i understand how your struggle,, *single tear* i think the commander wouldve completely rekt him though just bc of stat difference and whatnot. i think i actually just prayed for critical hits a lot ? but thats probably the best move: play it safe pfft.

yeSSS. they kEEp running their butts to where the enemies are and im like !! no omg stop that. it doesnt even make a difference if you get chrom to talk to them they still ruN away and its like why man, why. i THINK the trick is to use flying units to haul ass to the mountainside (where the villagers are going to run) and destroy everyone there before they have a chance to destroy the villagers. because they literally die in one hit. like sumia / cordelia work very well. i paired up my MU w/ cordelia and fought on the mountainside with a healer nearby paired up w/ a mounted unit for mobility. then you can get like sumia and chrom to fly over to the village to warn them. it took me a lot of tries to save all of them though and even that last time was close omg.

Chrom IS a meme. I must say though it IS really funny to marry him to Olivia because all you do is spam her dance during the ONE CHAPTER they're together before he auto marries and it's just "HEY I JUST MET YOU AND THIS IS CRAZY BUT HAVE MY CHILD". Lissa is just standing there like 'what is wrong with you two'. Though I also find it funny that the game make shim marry a random village woman if you NEVER SUPPORT HIM WITH ANY OF HIS FEW WIFE CHOICES because Lucina needs to exist she is more important then your terrible love life, Chrom.

Also I must say that I have found some very entertaining pairings and some nice ones this run. Gaius/Maribelle is surprisingly very heartfelt, gives interesting backstory and development to Gaius, and just 10/10 I GOT A GREAT BRADY TOO so I would highly suggest it. Though Gaius pairings rarely fail for me (Gaius/Lissa and Gaius/Panne are both glorious) basically Gaius is great never leave him unmarried. Also Panne/Donnel is hilarious due to the entire thing being about how Panne keeps falling into Donnel's hunting traps and gets frustrated by it. Ricken/Tharja is surprisingly cute, well for Tharja anyways.

BUT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLEASE DO SUMIA/HENRY OH MY GOD HE CASTS A BODY SWAP CURSE SO HE CAN STEAL HER BODY AND PEGASUS SO HE CAN FLY AROUND AND DROP THINGS ON EVERYONE IN CAMP. HENRY IS A GIFT. GOD BLESS HENRY.

but hello i am here to inform yall i restarted fe:a again before finishing again and i have done all a supports with all characters up to chapter 9

i found my share of entertaining and legitimately cute pairings
ricken/miriel is surprisingly cute and he helps her with science experiments. like its just adorable wow
nowi/lon'qu is also adorable bc they play house together omg
gregor/cordelia is like almost all the other supports with chromcentric dialogue but its surprisingly cute and entertaining
fem mu/gregor or vaike is really funny idk
also maki i agree w/ you on gaius/maribelle and gaius/panne theyre really cute ahHhH

im very excited to do henrys supports omg. ive vowed to marry him to tharja though on voxels request

im actually having #problems bc ive found that gregor/tharja is kinda,, iDK im havinng so many second thoughts and i havent even married anyone yet this is horrible oh mu god

except chrom and sumia bc im on chapter 11 and the sacrifice was... necessary
i wiLL do all of henrys supports though and maybe then i can get my pairings straight, but for now im just ???

i did read up a bit though about tharjas daughter and idk henry just doesnt seem like ?? idk i can see henry making dad jokes im sorry. im struggling with a lot of my pairings now bc after reading the fe:a wiki the dads dont seem to fit with their children ?? the one exception for me being lissa and vaike and sooner or later virion and olivia. but right now i am sO ???

is there anyone who can assist me with good pairings idk i just *falls on face* i want children with good stats
