Váli quirked an eyebrow again. "Favorite what?" they asked and picked up as peanut butter and jelly sandwich, nipping on the corner. It was triangle-shaped, as they like it. They took a large bite and swallowed. "This one is good," they complemented.

"Sandwich, of course." Pol reached down and plucked some grass, twirling it between his fingers. He gulped down the rest of his tea, then pulled out a water bottle from his backpack. He slowly filled his mug with water. Lastly he placed a tiny blade or grass on the water, watching it float around. "I wish I could make a real boat," he murmured. He glanced up at Váli. "Have you ever been on a boat?"

Their cheeks flushed slightly and they ducked their head, swallowing the peanut butter and jelly sandwich before snatching another one from the plate and starting to nibble away at it. "Oh, yeah." they murmured through a mouthful of bread, embarrassed. They watched as he twirled the blade of grass between his fingers. They shook their head. "Not from what I can remember." they answered.

"Hm. Well, I think I went on one once. It was ages ago, and it was terrifying. But it's one of my favorite memories." Pol sighed. "I came here hoping for a change, but so far it's all the same. Except for you, of course." He flashed a grin at Váli. "Why did you move here?"

They stopped chewing and blinked. There were many reasons for why they had chosen to move here, but Váli didn't want to tell him all of them. That would be too personal. They had only just met him. In time, they would, though. "The scenery," they answered and swallowed the bread, gesturing to the lake and such. It wasn't a complete lie; that was one reason. "You?"

Pol was silent for a moment. "Well, it was a combination of a lot of things, but really I wanted to escape. My, ah, family, they aren't like me. They're loud, sporty, and wip smart. I'm none of those things. I just needed to get away from the craziness of it all." Pol reached for another sandwhich and ate silently. He stared out over the lake. "I didn't realize how much I missed people until I started talking with you," he told Váli. "I hid for too long."

They frowned and put the sandwich down, folding their arms across their chest. "What do you mean you aren't smart?" Váli scoffed and glare at him. "You're extremely smart and you know it." they added and furrowed their eyebrows. Their expression softened when he said that and a blush dusted their cheeks. "Saying things like that makes it seem like we're on a date." they hissed and let their bangs fall onto their face to hide the blush.

"Oh, Ah," Pol fumbled, dropping his sandwich. "I mean, I think I really needed a friend. And I'm not smart the way they are. My family, I mean." He blushed. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make it a date," he mumbled. "I don't really know what qualifies as a date anyway." Oh, just shut up! Pol wanted to hide. How had this gotten awkward so quickly?

Váli kept their head down as they listened to him speak. "I don't mind if this is a date. I think you're cute-" they blurted and covered their mouth once they had realized they'd said it. They glanced up at him, face beet red, and kept their hands over their mouth. Pol's whole body was pink. He blinked, opened his mouth, then shut again. She thinks I'm cute? A ridiculous grin wormed its way onto his face. "It's ok." Pol was practically bouncing. "I think you're too pretty to be cute, so I can't return the compliment. This can be a date though." He reached out and picked a tiny golden flower. Quietly, almost shy, Pol handed it to Váli.
