Kaden Lange :: Mockingbird
"I like your jammies."
"Gah!" Kaden jumped, startled by the loud whisper in his ear. He felt goosebumps shudder across his body, his hair flashed green, then black, then blue. From the top of his scalp to the base of his neck the colours melted into one another as they changed. He reoriented himself, coming to terms that he was in his room, in his bed, and with a small girls face hovering above him.
"You're kinda like a lizard you know that?" The little blonde girl stared blankly at Kaden, unfazed by his colour shifts.
Kaden groaned, sitting up to realize he had fallen asleep in his suit last night. The silver fabric gleaned as he moved, and he let out a huff of amusement at the connection the small girl made between his suit and a pair of footed onesie pajamas. "Chell what the heck? What time is it?" Kade squinted at the 7 year old, and questioned his choices of trustworthy secret keepers. Chelsea was the only human being not from his past life that knew he could "change colours". Of course it wasnt really by choice that he told the child this, Chelsea had grown attached to Kaden very quickly when she came to the Children's Home, and she involved herself in any part of Kaden's life that she could. Including sneaking into his room in the middle of the night when he was returning from important business. She didn't know about his activities outside of the Home but she knew enough already for a 7 year old. Chell was surprisingly very good at keeping his secret, as long as he would entertain her in private by changing his face to mock the supervisors and nannies.
Chell touched Kadens phone and held it up to him. "I don't know what time it is you have a circle clock. I cant read circle clocks." Kaden wiped the sleep from his eyes and read the clock to her.
"Its 8:19." He yawned. "Ohmygod its 8:19 CHELL I'M GONNA BE LATE." Kaden threw the covers and practically tore his suit off. Chell kept herself occupied with the 'circle clock' and lounged in Kaden's bed where it was still warm from his slumber. In no little than four minutes Kaden had gotten dressed, shoved his books into his bag, pulled his boots on, and kissed Chell on the top of her head, as he stole his phone back and slipped it in his back pocket. As he swung his door open, a last minute reminder was granted to him from his littlest friend as she deadpanned "Hair". Kaden swore and mussed his hair up, as he ran down the hallway and stomped down the stairs, returning his hair from bright blue to his strawberry blond locks. He grabbed a brown paper lunchbag from the kitchen island and slid out the back door.
Not living too far from school, Kaden was usually able to walk, but on a day like this, he decided it would probably be best to take his bike. There was nothing he quite hated more though that biking the streets of New York, in the rain, late. By the time he ran three red lights and nearly knocked an old lady off her walker, he managed to peddle up to the courtyard just as the bell rang. Hopping off his bike and locking it lightning fast, he ran up the steps and slid inside the front hall panting. Dripping wet, exhausted, tired and hungry, and he punched the air.
"I DID IT. HELL YEAH. SUCK IT!" He shouted in triumph at the group gathered in the middle of the hall. "One more late slip and I would've blown my chances at a decent University, but that day is not today my friends, and I think we should all celebrate the fact that I am awesome." He swaggered up the hall, chest puffed and arms raised in thanks to whoever was watching out for him from the beyond. "Sup nerds," He rested his arm on Quinn's shoulder, "And Katie." He said smugly, picking on the fact Katie never seemed to be quite as geeky as the rest of her company.
