Aidah Hall • Phoenix
- last night -
Aidah walked into her new apartment, dropping her one duffel bag on the floor. Her hair was plastered to her head and she shivered from the onslaught outside. Some storm, she thought to herself. The tiny downtown apartment had one bedroom and one bath, and came with only the basic furnishings. At least it had a bed. And it was hers. All to herself. Aidah sighed at the silence and slumped to the floor, enjoying the quiet darkness. Tomorrow was the first day of her new life. After finally escaping the foster system, Aidah had applied for a scholarship at the prestigious Richardson's Academy, with stunning recommendations from her employers at InGen Science Corp. Her life was finally starting to turn around, but something still held Aidah back. She snapped her fingers and a tiny flame flickered to life, sending a glow over the main room of the apartment. Nerves shook Aidah, and the fire grew with her emotion. She quickly shut it off. How was she supposed to hide something like this? She had had her powers for years, and they still caused her great stress. Aidah unzipped the duffel bag, revealing the orange stitching on the back of the costume. The costume. She had spent months working on it at InGen. Maybe this could curb the unpredictability of her powers. She could only hope.
- the next morning -
beep beep beep. beep beep beep. The insistent buzzing of her alarm woke Aidah with a start. It was only four-thirty, but Aidah practically lived by the early-is-on-time policy. She had spent her life in second-rate everything, and she wasn't about to screw up her first day at something that could actually provide her with a future. Throwing on an ash-grey sweater and some jeans, Aidah pulled her red hair out of her face. With her excited anxiety, her hand briefly caught fire, singing a hole through her favorite sweater. Queitly muttering a curse, she stamped out the flame. Aidah glanced at the bag with her suit and dagger in the corner. Making an executive decision, she threw her books on top of the stranger things and took them all with her.
Running out to the street, Aidah waved down a taxi. "Richardson's, please," she said distractedly, pulling out a crumpled wad of cash.
"Yes, Miss," grunted the man, pulling out into the traffic. Aidah tapped her foot anxiously on the dirty mat of the cab. The ride seemed to take forever, and as soon as they pulled out in front of the building, Aidah jumped out of the car, nearly tripping. "Thanks!" she called, grabbing her bag. There they were. The front doors, old latin motto over the front and everything. Aidah forgot about her powers for a moment, excitement bubbling up inside her. Now this was a real school. She walked through the front door, clutching the paper containing her schedule in her hand. Almost everything was science related. AP Chem, Biotech, AP Physics, even an Anthropology class awaited her. She had already taken care of most of her grad reqs, and was excited to focus on her true passion: science. Aidah wondered about last night's storm. It was quite a scientific phenomenon, and she wondered about the air pressure required to inspire such a gale. It seemed to have calmed down this morning, but--
Aidah's books tumbled to the floor as she barreled through a group of four people laughing and talking. They were obviously friends, and she was painfully obviously the new girl. Her cheeks tinged pink, she quickly gathered up her stuff and looked up. "I am so sorry," she stuttered, trying to calm herself down before something caught fire. She had been so immersed in her own reality that she hadn't even noticed the others milling about the school.
Katie Williams • Human
- that morning -
Katie jumped out of bed, her hair frizzy and drool sticking to the side of her face. It was 7:52. She was running late, for, like, the third time that week. Grabbing her textbooks and camera, Katie threw on a pink sweater and rushed out of the penthouse, kissing her father goodbye. Her parents barely seemed to care if she even went to school or not. Even though they kind of expected her to get good grades, they knew they could just bribe Harvard or Yale to let her in, even if her GPA was not a 4.0. Katie ran down the street to the front door, blowing through like a gust of wind. She waved to all of her friends, before she caught sight of Aidah on the ground. They had met earlier that week at the NY public library, and she had promised to show her new friend around, and now she was late. What if Aidah never talks to me again? she fretted as she ran over to the new girl.
"Hey, Aidah, I'm so sorry I'm late, I didn't mean to...oh, hi." Katie stopped stuttering as she noticed she had an audience of more than just Aidah. She thought she recognized a few of the faces, but she wasn't sure. Quickly grabbing Aidah's chem textbook, Katie blushed a violent shade of magenta at her own clumsiness.
