─────────────────────────────────────
a summary ─────────────────
when the stars went out one night in 2017, people ran screaming and called it the end of the world, and even the
scientists, who were meant to keep level heads, panicked and advised everyone to hoard food and prepare for the
end. people were terrified, countries were crumbling, everyone was throwing caution to the wind and crime was
at an all-time high everywhere during that time. and then, like knights in shining armor, the u.s. government swo-
oped in. they seized control of north and south america, establishing order and offering help to those who needed
it. when europe crumbled, they sent ships across the atlantic, and within three years managed to take control of
every country but australia. as the years went on, the u.s. managed to hold its territory, and renamed everything
to the united nations. australia kept its name, and, just barely, its land. its people fought tooth and nail daily to
keep the u.n. out, but it was an endless battle.
fast forward to present day, 2046. everything is roughly the same as when the blackout hit nearly 30 years ago.
the u.n. has cracked down on its citizens -- food rations, population control (a family is only allowed one child)
and then, of course, the believers. people who claimed to be see stars in the sky where everybody else saw an
endless expanse of black. these people were considered insane, and if somebody even suspected somebody else
was a believer, they were required by law to report the person. they would promptly disappear within a matter
of days, never to be seen again. nobody knew where they went, and they assumed that they were executed.
the truth is that they were shipped to a secret base on the nearest island to australia they they held. it was huge
and purposely removed from maps when it was established. the base was where the believers lived -- or, as they
were officially called, the suicide squads. when they arrived on base they were immediately assigned to a squad
and joined seven others in training for the next ten years. during this time, they only had contact with their fell-
ow squad members and the trainers, so they were in almost total isolation. they trained twelve hours a day, ate
short, cold meals, and then went to sleep in their metal beds with only thin cotton blankets to keep them warm.
and then when the ten years were up (more, possibly, if the trainers decided your squad needed more practice),
they were outfitted in uniforms and given guns and told to kill their way as far into australia as possible. it was
eight soldiers against the bulk of an army -- the squads never stood a chance. but every so often, there will be an
outstanding squad, and they'll be sent on special missions. you are a part of one of those squads.
your mission is to infiltrate the headquarters of the australian government, which is located in a large, primarily
underground building, located in sydney. you're being smuggled in when you notice that somebody seems to have
dropped some cash on the ground. you grab it and hurry to follow the person and return the money, but they dis-
appear behind a closed door. you turn to leave, but then you hear voices, and decide to linger. the voices talk a-
bout how your squad seems promising, and somebody mentions what a shame it is for you to have to die just bec-
ause your genetics are different. a third voice snaps back that you have to be out of the way unless they want ev-
eryone to find out the truth about what really happened at the blackout, and that it's better you die serving your
country than spend the rest of your life in a metal cage in a prison somewhere. the other person laughs -- "they
wouldn't even have to worry about which way they'd rather die if we hadn't burnt up the stars" -- and there is a r-
ound of shushing from inside the room. you return dazedly to your squad, having heard all you needed to hear,
and tell them everything. you are left in sydney, alone, a few hours later, and you know you have two choices: t-
ell australia about the stars and get the news out to the u.n. citizens through them, or break into the headquart-
ers and kill the president. your choice could save the world or end it. pick carefully, and good luck!
