Prologue

A black and white tom crouched over the clear pool of icy water with three other cats. The three others stared at him with disbelief and slight disgust.
"Who sent you?" a sleek black she-cat demanded.
The tom bowed his head as he looked into her bright yellow eyes. He felt as though she could start a forest fire with her intensity.
"Nobody sent me but I am as entitled to be here as you three," he answered politely.
"Leave him," grunted a scruffy black tom with battle scars across his face and body.
"Who asked you, Stormstar?" the black she-cat hissed, rising to her paws and bristling her fur.
Stormstar looked at the black and white tom, ignoring the arrogent she-cat.
"Swiftfoot, why are you, a common traitor, as entitled to this meeting as we three leaders are?" he asked, calmer than he looked.
Swiftfoot leaped to his paws and arched his back, spitting at the scruffy old tom. How dare he? He was perfectly entitled.
"She's my daughter!" he hissed. "My daughter and my son, who I carelessly left upon the ground without a Father," the young tom added, disappointment in his voice and dark, greenish-blue eyes.
"It was not your fault," Stormstar mewed gently. "It was inevitable-."
"Don't you tell me it was inevitable!" Swiftfoot snapped. "It was all preventable. It was all my fault."
The sleek black she-cat finally sat down and wrapped her long tail around her soft paws. She looked solemly at him.
"None of it was your fault. None of-."
"Don't lie!" Swiftfoots hiss was much lower now, almost a whisper. "I almost caused the death of my mate and kits! But instead I wander aimlessly with StarClan. I would have been better in the Place of No Stars!"
The third unidentified cat rose to his paws. He was obviously a tom and had golden tabby fur and amber eyes. The tom looked young, too young to be in StarClan.
"Hello, young warrior," he spoke with such knowledge that it seemed too much for his youthful self. "No I do not belong to StarClan but I am a medicine cat. StarClan let me wait here to meet you. I am WindClans medicine cat. I shall watch over your daughter."
"But she doesn't want to be a medicine cat," Swiftfoot mewed.
The medicine cat chuckled warmly.
"I have eyes beyond my den, you know. And mews can reach my through many ways," the cat meowed. "I am Lionclaw. I think that you may want to hear the latest WindClan prophecy."
Swiftfoot nodded quickly. If it involved his daughter or son then he was desperate to know!
"The lone cloud causes a storm," Lionclaw mewed in a slightly rasping voice.
"W-what does it mean?" Swiftfoot stammered. "How can it involve my kits?"
"I know it involves both your kits and your daughters friend. As well as this 'lone cloud' the prophecy speaks of."
Swfitfoot nodded. He would have to think about this. Contemplate it and consider its de-coding possiblilities.

Chapter I

Thornpaw lay, stretched out across a rock at the edge of camp, sunning her golden tabby pelt. She sat up to look around, her dark greenish-blue eyes scanning the WindClan camp. The young apprentice saw Lionclaw, the Clan medicine cat, and his apprentice, Hawkpaw. Lionclaw was a large, long-furred golden tabby with the build of a warrior while Hawkpaw was a small, scrawny russet-brown kit.
Across from their den, at the apprentices den, was Thornpaws brother, Soilpaw. Her dust brown brother puffed out his white chest. The white led up to his muzzle and ended at his small pink nose. His eyes were moss green seemed like they could be seen from long distances.
Something touched Thornpaws shoulder. She let out a wailing yowl before falling from the rock and went muzzle-first into the soft grass.
"Thornpaw, Thornpaw, come quick!" a white she-cat stood upon the rock Thornpaw had sat a moment before.
Her eyes were light blue and full of excitement.
"Snowpaw!" Thornpaw growled playfully. "Right, what is it?"
"Just come quick! I've got to show you something...someone!"
Thornpaw tilted her head but then ignored her urge to ask so many questions. Snowpaw flew off the rock and landed softly on her paws. Thornpaw leaped back onto the rock then slipped. She tried to dig her now unsheathed claws into the hard stone but failed and was sent back down into the grass, looking up at her excitable friend.
Thornpaw heaved herself, yet again, to her paws. After a moment of having stood up Snowpaw darted away. Snowpaw shot after her. They were both just newly apprenticed so Thornpaw was surprised Snowpaw was allowed out of camp so early. 'Lavenderpelt," Thornpaw thought, 'she never cares about her apprentices.'
Soon enough, after only a short journey across the nearest part of the moorland to camp, Snowpaw stopped. The golden tabby spotted her friends sudden halt a moment before she would have crashed into her.
"Right, we're here, what are we looking-?" she trailed off.
A russet, red-brown tom was standing in the grass with his back to them. The tom looked about their age but with skinnier limbs, much unlike Soilpaw. He obviously couldn't even hear them. Was he deaf? Or just stupid? Thornpaw crept forward but Snowpaw rested her tail on her shoulder.
"What are you doing?" she hissed.
"I'm going to go see what he wants!" Thornpaw mewed, stalking further forward.
She knew Snowpaw was giving her 'the glare' but Thornpaw decided she would not turn around to see 'the glare' from her friends pale blue eyes. 'Only another pawstep,' Thornpaw thought to herself.
The golden tabby crouched low then, after a moments hesitation, she leaped into the air then crumbled down upon the intruding tom. Thornpaw batted his ears but kept her claws sheathed.
"What are you doing?" the tom hissed, keeping his eyes tightly closed.
Thornpaw stepped off him and took a few steps back.
"Who are you?" she demanded.
The tom rose to his paws and shook his fur. He opened his eyes. They were sky blue and, for some reason, made Thornpaw tilt her head.
"Who are you?" the golden she-cat repeated but much softer.
"I'm Rowan, who are you?" the tom growled.
Thornpaw looked still stared into his eyes. He gave her a peculiar look and stared back. Snowpaw arched her back and hissed.
"We don't have to tell you, rouge!" she spat.
"Snowpaw."
"What?"
"Please shut up," Thornpaw growled playfully, pulling herself away from the rouges eyes.
"So you're Snowpaw," Rowan mewed then tilted his head and looked at Thornpaw. "And your the mystery she-cat."
"Thornpaw," the golden tabby mewed before Snowpaw could say anything. "I'm Snowpaw. We're Clan cats. Our Clan Camp is further up the moorland."
Rowan nodded with interest.
"Sounds nice. I live in the forest. Well, I did until a group of cats ran my mother and I out. My mother, unfortunately, died," he mewed, looking at the grass.
Thornpaw looked at the ground, too. She felt sorrow for the young rouge. Before she spoke to Rowan again, she looked at Snowpaw.
"D'you think Breezestar will allow us to bring him to camp?" she asked hopefully.
Snowpaw nodded.
"She can't turn down a cat who could have easily been one of us," the white she-cat mewed.
Thornpaw rustled the grass with her tail to gain the rouges attention. She waited for the russet tom too look up again before she spoke.
"Would you like to come back to our camp. We could give you fresh-kill and shelter," Thornpaw offered.
Rowan smiled and pricked up his ears.
"That would be delightful."

Chapter II

Thornpaw sat at her Leaders paws, looking up at her. The light grey she-cat looked down at the small apprentice with a disapointed glare. They were both in the leaders den, a large burrow under the soil and re-enforced with stones all around the den. There was a small hole that was just big enough for a cat that connected all of the dens.
"I expected better of you, Thornpaw," she mewed. "You should not have brought a petty rouge right to the centre of our camp when ThunderClan had already thrown him out. Do you know what he was done to be chased out?"
Thornpaw looked at her own paws and flattened her ears, embarassed of her leaders disipline.
"I'm sorry, Silverstar," she mewed quietly. "But he seems harmless enough!"
Silverstar growled softly and wrapped her tail tightly around her paws.
"You are just a kit!" she hissed. "You could have put the whole Clan in danger of a rouge attack!"
The golden tabby medicine cat crawled through the hole in the bottom of the den. He didn't look as though he could fit through the small hole but he managed to push through his burly shoulders.
"Don't be so harsh, Silverstar," Lionclaw mewed.
Silverstars fur bristled slightly. She glared at the medicine tom and unwrapped her tail from her paws so that she could stand on her four paws.
"Harsh? She could have endangered the Clan! Do you remember Tigerstar?"
"Tigerstar was murdered long ago. We weren't even in that territory never mind alive!" Lionclaw mewed. "It was an honest mistake. You could maybe even give the rouge a chance."
Silverstar looked at the medicine cat in anger and disgust. Thornpaw wanted to run out of the den. Her leaders icy blue eyes frightened the young apprentice.
"Give the rouge a chance?" she snarled. "Rouges are vermin! They are the rats of cats!"
Thornpaws fur bristled and she took a step forward.
"Don't speak about Rowan like that!" she spat. "He is just as worthy to be here as I am!"
"You may not speak!" Silverstar hissed.
"Silverstar, she's just a-," Lionclaw cut off as his leader turned and unsheathed her claws.
She took a stalking step towards him.
"Ignorance must be dealt with swiftly," the light grey she-cat growled.
"You're just like my father!" Thornpaw yowled.
The young tabby turned and crouched down low to the ground. There was a hole on the roof of the underground den that had light shining through it and made a perfect shape on the ground. Only half a moment later she pounced into the air and unsheathed her claws. She stretched out her paws and tried to hook her claws onto the side of the hole. Thornpaw felt her claws dig into the dirt and attempted to pull herself up. She felt something underneath her hind-paws. It was fur. The young tabby let go of the dirt then pounced through the dirt-hole again.
Finally, Thornpaw pulled herself out of her Leaders den. She looked down to see Lionclaw.
"There is a prophecy!" he rasped quickly. "The lone cloud causes a storm! Remember it."
Thornpaw nodded. She turned around, her tail flying behind her, and saw the russet rouge tom anxiously standing beside Snowpaw.
"Snowpaw, get Soilpaw!" the golden tabby ordered.
The white furred apprentice tilted her head then ran off to another hole in the ground. Thornpaw turned to the rouge.
"Run," she mewed quickly. "Where this scent ends stop and wait."
Rowan nodded. After a moments hesitation he turned and ran out of camp. One of the warriors stuck their head out of their den.
"Get lost you piece of fox-dung!" he shouted.
Snowpaw skidded to a halt at her side with Soilpaw close by.
"Why do you need him?" Snowpaw asked.
"He's my brother and we'll need an extra pair of claws," Thornpaw answered. "There will be a fresh but faint scent of rouge. Follow it to the border. Not the ThunderClan border but the border we don't share with any Clans."
Soilpaw nodded and darted off without question. He had a much stronger build than either of the she-cats and Rowan but still chose not to fight, no matter how much he was provoked.
"Come on," Thornpaw mewed, streaking after her brother.
One moment, Snowpaw was nowhere to be seen then the next she was ahead of Thornpaw, her fur blowing back against the moorland winds.
"Why are we doing this?" Snowpaw demanded.
"Because of intolerance. Your mother and father and my mother will miss us but they will last. I think they have noticed the closed-minded views of Silverstar," Thornpaw mewed.
Snowpaw nodded. Soon enough, Soilpaw was only a fox-length ahead of them and Rowan was standing on the border.
"Come on!" Rowan yelled.

Chapter III

Thornpaw look a few leaping bounds before flexing her claws to bring herself to an ubrupt halt. Rowan was only a kitten-step away from her and Soilpaw was standing with Snowpaw just at the border. Thornpaw turned around to see if anyone was there. Why had Lionclaw helped her escape? Why had she even escaped? Was the intolerance of the Clan that harsh? It couldn't possibly be!
"Come on, I know a place," Rowan mewed. "Some of your Clan might follow us."
Thornpaw nodded. WindClan had changed. It used to be so peaceful, well as the Elders had told her. The Elders had heard stories from their Elders who had heard stories from their Elders and so on that WindClan once had a Leader called Tallstar. When he died there was Onestar and since then WindClan had only gotten worse and more vicious.
"Thornpaw, come on!" Soilpaw called, interupting her thoughts.
"I'm not called Thornpaw anymore," the golden tabby growled, darting after her brother. "Call me Dawnpaw."
Soilpaw chuckled like a senior warrior. She tilted her head.
"What?" she demanded.
"Nothing, Dawnpaw," Soilpaw mewed. "Call me Duskpaw."
Snowpaw looked at them both.
"Why are you two changing your names?" she asked.
"Because I don't want to keep the name of intolerance," Dawnpaw answered.
"And I've already chosen my warrior name!" Duskpaw announced.
Dawnpaw looked at him and tilted her head.
"Go on then," she mewed curiously.
"Duskfang!" the brown tom meowed.
"Nice," Dawnpaw mewed approvingly. "What would mine be?"
"I'll be Snowfoot!" Snowpaw announced.
Dawnpaw looked at her with sad eyes.
"You said you always wanted to be Snowstorm," she meowed.
"Yes, but that was then. This is now," Snowpaw mewed happily.
"Does that mean I'm now Rowanpaw?" Rowan asked.
"We could all start a Clan!" Dawnpaw proclaimed, ignoring Rowan.
"But we're four apprentices. We don't even know how to fight or hunt," Duskpaw put in.
Rowan let out a yowl, trying to keep it quiet so that nothing else would find them. The three apprentices turned to look at him and see what was so important.
"I have a friend," the russet tom began, "who wouldn't be interested in joining a Clan but knows how to hunt and fight."
Dawnpaw took a step towards him.
"I'm listening," she mewed curiously.
"He's just beyond the moor with my other...Clan members," Rowan meowed, fitting in the Clan-speak.
Duskpaws ear flicked in a commanding manner.
"Then let's go," the brown tom mewed.
Rowan nodded then left with a flick of his tail. He had disappeared in a matter of moments then, soon after, so was Duskpaw. Snowpaw and Dawnpaw exchanged an excited glance then streaked after them. The moorland happened to be a much larger distance than Dawnpaw thought. She imagined it only being a few fox-lengths after the WindClan territory but it was much farther.
Rowan was fox-lengths ahead of Duskpaw. A bulky black cat stopped the brown and white tom after Rowan ran past the cat. Dawnpaw tilted her head. Why was Duskpaw stopped? She saw her brother and the black scruffy cat talking then arguing.
Dawnpaw was soon right beside her brother. Then, less than a moment later, Rowan was standing opposite her.
"Hello, is there a problem?" Rowan asked before Dawnpaw could say anything.
"Do you know these Clan-Cats?" the black tom demanded.
His eyes were gleaming yellow and, looking closer, his dark fur was tabby but the stripes were barely visible. There were scars that showed through where scraps of fur were missing.
"Yes, Shadow," Rowan mewed. "Actually, we came here to see you. We need you to help us with the usual practice."
The black cat growled then looked at his paws.
"Ok," he mewed. "But for now you sleep."

Chapter IV

Dawnpaw awoke on her back in a hollow tree log that was tipped on her side. Her hind paws were almost touching her ears because the log was too narrow. Beside her, Rowan had curved himself perfectly around the log with his lean figure. On her other side, Duskpaw was almost sleeping on his head with his ears flattened sideways. And beside him was Snowpaw who had slept perfectly well along the bottom of the log with her head sticking out of the other side. Dawnpaw growled and nudged Rowan with one paw.
"Hey, move I want to get up," she meowed stiffly.
Rowan opened his bright eyes. He looked at her and purred. Dawnpaw watched him slide back onto his paws. He was facing her and took a few steps back. Dawnpaw tried to copy him to slide back onto her paws. She gave herself one nudge then slid backwards so fast she couldn't see until it was too late. The golden tabby was flown forward and then just felt her muzzle smash against the wood. Dawnpaw heard Rowan let out a mrrow of laughter and she growled playfully at him.
She stepped away from the side of the log then faced Rowan before padding forward. The log was pretty short so when Rowan took only one step back he disappeared off the edge. Dawnpaw darted forward and looked over the edge. She purred at the sight. Rowan was on his head with his hind paws touching his noes.
Dawnpaw leanly stepped down and nudged him backwards so that he was lying on his back, looking at her. Rowan smiled and playfully batted at her nose. The golden tabby giggled then felt something furry behind her. For a moment nobody moved then Dawnpaw fell forward, letting out a feeble squeal and closed her eyes tightly shut.
When she opened her eyes she was nose-to-nose with Rowan and Snowpaw was standing over them, purring playfully.
"Hello," Rowan mewed, laughing.
Dawnpaw smiled as he took his hand of her chest and stepped back. She sat down and wrapped her tail around her paws and watched Rowan as he sat up.
"We should... uh, go see Shadow," he mewed, distractedly.
"Uh, yeah," Dawnpaw meowed, looking away.
Rowan got up then gave her an awkward glance before turning around and leaping onto the tree log and padding along. Snowpaw stared at Dawnpaw, letting out a low purr.
"What?" Dawnpaw demanded, flattening her ears defensivly.
"Nothing, nothing," Snowpaw mewed, looking away but still smiling.
The golden tabby glared at her friend but still smiled. She got up and crouched down, taking a few steps back. After a moment she stalked forward and pounced up onto the top of the log where Rowan was. Dawnpaw looked back down at her friend. It wasn't so high up.
Snowpaw took a step back to look up at her and smiled. Dawnpaw leaped down on top of her friend and they both fell forward back into the short grass. Snowpaw had been her best friend since they were kits and they had always played with Soilpaw. Duskpaw and Dawnpaw were different from Soilpaw and Thornpaw. She knew that. Everyone knew that.
Dawnpaw stopped tussling with her friend and sat up. She looked at the dust they had upset and let out a quiet, sad mew. Snowpaw rose to her paws and looked at her friend then tilted her head. Dawnpaw saw the anxiety in her eyes.
"Do you think we'll miss everyone back at camp?" she asked.
"Of course, they're our family. Our everything," Snowpaw mewed quietly.
Dawnpaw thought for a moment then remembered who she would miss most. She would miss the short, ginger tabby tom who always slept beside her and Snowpaw in the den. Beechpaw. Her mother had gone cold and silent since Father had died. She would not even notice their disappearance. Even if she did, she knew that they could take care of theirselves, no matter how young they are.
The two friends sat in silence. There would always be a bond stronger between Dawnpaw, Snowpaw and Duskpaw than Rowan. Dawnpaw felt sorrow for him but also envious. He didn't know what it was like to live in complete tolerance one day, then none the next and have to leave it all behind. Was it the right choice?
Dawnpaw began to regret her sudden decision but there was no way back.
