Preparations pt. 1

Postby Piefan » Fri Nov 21, 2014 2:24 pm

I hate everything.

Not that I'm gonna go all emo on you, my lychee, or I'd be calling you Spider or Death Cap Mushroom or Nightshade or something like that. I'm still keeping your name right now. But I hate Lucy more than ever right now. I thought she'd spare me or something, 'cause, you know, broken arm? Need crutches to walk? It's frustrating enough in everyday life, and my father seemed frustrated. Considering we're the only two people working in the fields, it's pretty bad.

There isn't much to say about our buying of the stuff. I suck at decoration, honestly, even if Lucy gave me a picture of the room in which the detailed report on colour theory. (I think she printed it off Wikipedia, from the logo at the top.)

Just let it be said that a) Lucy was less rich than I expected. b) She will now have neon orange and pastel purple decorations. Hah.
(Reef's diary)
As I mentioned in my previous entry, Lucy insisted that the four of us help her with her birthday party. And she set me in charge of food.

I went back home for this task, to find a catering company. As both parents were out, I quickly went to the computer before scanning through the list she gave me. I had an idea already...

"Oh, and Reef, I'm allergic to rice." I read the cursive letters aloud, wincing. "Is that even possible?" I doubted it was, probably just a way to say 'I dislike rice, don't get any.'

But regardless of whether she was or not, my main task was to get what she wanted. Unfortunately, rice was a staple of what I was thinking of. She must be doing this on purpose, I thought with a frown. I knew it was unlikely, none of us had took the time to find out about each other beyond what could be realised easily, but it helped my mood somehow. Thinking she was deliberately sabotaging what she asked us to do rather than my ideas simply not being up to par was much better.

I sighed as I clicked the icon for the Internet and went onto Google, looking up a site for catering companies and beginning to search. After a while (I will not go into detail here, I am already running out of pages from that long argument with the principal), I decided I had found something decent that, hopefully, Lucy would enjoy. I once again looked through the list she had given me and, after confirming that everything fit her standards, glanced to the email she had provided and sent her the details.

The rest of the day went typically, so I shall not write it out here.

___
Next post will be Henry and Lucy.

Okay, fine, maybe I did constantly make those two do things one after another because of that pairing in the musical they were based on...

Preparations pt. 2

(Henry's diary)
Dear journal,

It was an alright day overall. I had no particular plans for the day anyway, so I didn't really mind being forced to help Lucy. At least we were all splitting up. I think if I'd had to spend any more time with those people out of school, someone would've died painfully.

I was asked to take care of the entertainment (which Apollo for some reason decided he needed to comment on). I found a piece of paper inside my backpack and quickly drew up a list.

  • Board games (Chess and/or checkers sounds nice)
  • Card games (Solitaire? Uno?)
  • ... I have no idea.

... Fine, so I am uncreative when it comes to that area. But honestly, what else could you expect?

(I was thinking some sudokus, actually, but the list Lucy gave me said "IF WE HAVE TO THINK A LOT FOR IT, IT ISN'T ENTERTAINING" in large, bold, underlined text.)

As such, I went to a games store and browsed around for a while (why exactly is Twister a game? Do people want to have their bones dislocated?) before finding what I needed, strangely labelled "Clearance - 90% discount" with smaller text saying "Please, take it already".

That was convenient.

I gave it to Lucy, though I'm not sure whether she'll like it or not.

(Lucy's diary)
Date: 03/02/14
Weather: k
Mood: ...
It's my birthday in one week, as my past 4 diary entries said. My teammates - no, not friends, the only friends I have are Populars and I didn't want to ask them - volunteered to help after a little convincing by yours truly.

I took care of the party favours and music and all that stuff. Actually, Henry should have handled the second thing, but I guessed he'd probably just get some Sudoku and declare it entertainment. I eventually realised "Hey, I have some instruments in the balcony, wjy not just use those?" and just found a bunch of miniature chocolate bars. There, my job was done! I'm a genius!

Anyway, then I received the emails.

Reef had sent a polite email giving me the details of a company she had found... Acceptable, I guess. Apollo didn't have Internet access at home, or my address, so I hadn't received anything from him. Henry... Okay, this is ridiculous. He bought two checkerboards and an UNO card deck.

Well, I guess that at least means people will spend more time focused on me.

This is too much writing than should be legal in one day. Goodbye, darn diary!

I was supposed to post this yesterday, but forgot...

I for some reason really like writing for Reef so the post after the next will either be written by her or Lucy.

Filler

Postby Piefan » Sun Nov 23, 2014 2:00 pm

Lychee, I'm bored.

It's the weekends and I usually look forward to them, but, well... I guess school's weird. But, at least I get a break from the urge to punch someone.

My family brought me to the doctor, and I should be able to get out of this cast by two weeks. It could be worse, I guess.

Or, considering my father just spent ten minutes to scribble a picture of five elephants on it, no it couldn't. I hate elephants. Dang it.

It is a pretty good drawing, though.

Lucy invited me, and probably the rest, to her birthday party, by the way, through mail. I have no idea how she got my address, but considering how Henry seems to find anything unnecessary, probably his fault. I guess I'm attending. Don't have much choice anyway, so might as well!

Game of Checkers

Postby Piefan » Sun Nov 23, 2014 9:09 pm

Lychee, today was Lucy's birthday party. Yay. I probably should have actually put thought into the decorations, but whatever. I arrived about an hour early and helped out. I think she appreciated it.

The house was pretty cool, I guess, after it was decorated. Not that I got much chance to see it. She shoved me, along with Reef and Henry once they got there, into a corner of the room where we spent most of it playing checkers.

Well, Henry and I did anyway. You can't exactly play with three people. Reef just sat watching, and listening to our conversation:

"Why do I have this strange feeling that I'm going to win every game for about one hour until you finally decide 'this is frustrating' and fight back, flawlessly winning?"

As he jumped one of my pieces, I replied.
"That's a really specific feeling..."
"Yes."
"So of all the things possible, why'd you buy a checkerboard?"
"Why not?"

I frowned when he captured my only king and piece, winning the game.

One hour and ten minutes later, the score was 2 to 0.

"I thought you said you were good at playing this."
"I never said that, actually."
"Oh."

He looked around as he captured my last piece.

"This id frustrating."
"Yeah, sure. Where'd Reef go?"
"Reef?"

I realised suddenly that she was gone. Weird.

"She probably left a while ago. Another game?"
"Of course."

And we continued.

This time, I won flawlessly.

"So I was right."
"What?"
"I won all checker games for an hour. Then you suddenly started winning."
"Cool."
"How'd you do it?"
"Win checkers? There is no special way, just concentrate, and think ahead."
"You mean I shouldn't have memorised the ways a checker game can go?"
"Yes.
Also I learned psychology and managed to manipulate you into not taking the opportunity to capture my pieces."

And then it was over.

No, seriously, we'd spent the entire party playing chess. Reef later told me that Lucy invited us outside too, but, according to her, 'we seemed to almost be in a trance, continuing to talk about checkers'.

Weird. Am I really that obsessed?
____
For the record:
Apollo still dislikes Henry, but when they're playing checkers he really doesn't care.

Okayy, I lied when I said this post would be written by Reef/Lucy. Next one will definitely be.

Postby Piefan » Mon Nov 24, 2014 5:55 pm

(Reef's diary)
Dear diary,

Not much happened. I watched Apollo and Henry play checkers for a while before Lucy invited me to partake in the festivities.

I found it was much more exciting to watch the two of them. And I had a significantly smaller headache when not paying attention to the music - a series of loud, low pitched notes on the electric guitar with little rhythm, played by who else but Lucy, and accompanied by what seemed to be mindless shouting (there may have been words there, but I was unable to make them out if so) by her friends.

Basically, before she allowed me to exit the corner, I sat at a table, watching other people do mind-numbingly boring things. After I exited, I sat on the ground, listening to other people play mind-numbingly irritating things.

Nonetheless, I was taught to have good manners, and tried picking out good things in the music. I found nothing. While I am certainly no musical prodigy, nor could I even play anything more than basic songs, I do like to think of myself as appreciative of it. In almost any song, I manage to find something good, whether a nice melody or catchy tune. As such, it was really saying something when I disliked her music.

When she finished, I called out, "Might I suggest the next song be something that will not cause my ears to ring?"

She frowned, but nodded. "I guess?"

She ran upstairs, back into her room, as I appreciated the moment of (near-)silence. Not that the other partycomers shared the sentiment. As if purposely trying to annoy me, they immediately began chatting.

I muttered curses before sighing, flattening my ears against my head. Please let this be over soon... Glancing towards the direction of my other two teammates revealed that they were still playing checkers, not even looking up.

One minute later, Lucy came running down, nearly tripping over her dress in the process. On her back were several pieces of paper with musical notes printed on them."Okay, I think I got something."

"Oh?" I perked an eyebrow at this.

"A concerto written by some guy with a long name. Because of that, ir's probably unpronounceable."

"The word 'unpronounceable' is longer than any musician's name I know of," I remarked.

I was about to ask what the name was, but I reasoned that, given she had begun running off again, she would not answer. It took another minute for her to return, carrying a violin.

"This is going to be boring..." she muttered.

She set up the sheet music on a stand and stood on her hind legs before she began to play.

It was an amazing sound, soft and slow, but alluring. Though her friends somehow thought it was boring, from the whispers among the crowd.

If I did not know better, I would think she was trying to lower their expectations, only to surpass them completely. A note glided to another one beautifully, and suddenly, the tempo increased.

It was enough to satisfy both myself and her friends. It was far from pop, still classical, but rather than the slow, depressing tone often seen, it was quick and happy.

I was mesmerised by the music, and applauded when it was done - though, given I had long fur, it cushioned the sound to make it softer.

As such, she barely heard it, talking to herself. "I really messed up on the glissandos," she mumbled.

"That was amazing!" I said cheerfully, standing. Lucy looked at me in surprise.

"What? Oh, thanks." She walked over to me, plopping down and leaving the instrument behind. While she was beside me, I took the opportunity to ask something that I had been wondering:

"So, Lucy, I have been wondering: why did you invite me to leave that corner of the room but not the others?"

She shrugged casually. "Why not? You seem a whole lot more... normal than the two of them."

Frowning, I perked an ear. "But normal is different in the standards of different people. To myself and Henry, you seem abnormal. You think of yourself as perfectly ordinary."

"I'm extraordinary, thank you very much."

I scowled at her.

"Fine. I'm pretty sure you know the answer, though. Mu friends wouldn't really like them."

"Your friends?" I questioned. "The same friends whom you refused to ask for help because they would dislike that? A true, true friend helps a friend in need."

She hesitated... and then nodded."Whatever, fine. I'll go see if they're willing to tear themselves away from checkers."

I followed as she walked to the corner where they were, and watched.

"Hey guys, you can stop playing if you'd like."

They continued, Henry capturing one of several kings belonging to Apollo. "I never said that, actually," said the latter, not bothering to look up.

"Oh."

They continued playing in silence.

"Admittedly they do not seem like they wish to join in the festivities."

She shrugged, flicking her tail. "Told ya so. I'm going back to the music."

Just as she said, she walked over to her violin, her expression pondering and thoughtful, before she picked up her bow, and began to play.

As melodic, bittersweet notes filled my ears, I waved a paw in front of Henry. He responded not, and I shrugged.

((A/N: These next few paragraphs are basically long descriptions of Lucy's music. You may find it boring. [~~~] signals its end.))

Walking back to where everyone else was, I took note of the music.

It was fast and somehow airy, despite the low tones used throughout. The first few seconds were spent assuming the song was a happy one, but I soon noticed its sad undertones. The jubilance was very much forced, seeming to even fool itself into thinking it was a cheerful tune. How she caused this effect with a single instrument is a mystery to me.

To say what happened next was abrupt would be a lie. It was almost expected - emphasis on almost. It was more of a nagging suggestion at the listener's mind, rather than a screaming "SHE'S GOING TO DO THIS!" 'This' referring to the complicated melodies she started up. The sound was barely music at all, more of random noise. Yet, considering the skill displayed earlier, I found myself drawn to continue listening.

After each few bars, the volume increased, and it alternated between a sinister voice to a happy invitation. As if it were fighting a verbal battle with itself, constantly pushing. The 'evil' one grew shorter and shorter after each turn, and the 'pure' one longer. What is she doing with this? I couldn't help but wonder.

Suddenly, all the sound stopped, but she stayed holding her violin. And after about two seconds of anticipation, it started up again.

It was beautiful.

Certainly, it could've been much better, but my expectations had been significantly lowered, so the happiness was welcomed. It started out intense and defensive, eventually slowing and softening slightly to a peaceful bliss.

What I found strangest, though, was that this was obviously not the kind of music she liked to play. She had shown to prefer wowing everyone, and the melody in the middle would have taken much effort. Wasted effort. Nobody would truly like it. Why?

[~~~]

As the song ended, her 'friends' booed. "That was terrible!" complained one, voice high-pitched and annoying.

Lucy smirked. "Ruby... I. Don't. Care." She stomped her paw to punctuate each word. "You are terrible. Terrible friends, terrible people. You couldn't play anything half that advanced if your life depended on it."

A canine, presumably Ruby, scowled, walking up to her. "How dare you? We're all populars like you, so you need to respect us."

"Like this!" she yelled, and I stepped back, startled. "We're not in school, so it doesn't matter what groups we're in! And even if we were, I'm the leader! If anything, you should respect me!"

Ruby, too, stepped back. "Fine then, I'm leaving. Who's with me?"

A murmur rose from the crowd and they flooded through the door. Lucy... well, to say she looked dejected is an understatement. I wondered what I should do, and eventually walked up to her.

"Good job getting rid of those people," I praised, my formal demeanour nearly slipping in shock.

"Thanks, I guess." She glanced at the clock. "Well, the party's about to be over anyway. Where are..." She looked at Henry and Apollo, who were still playing chess. "Wow."

It has been a long day, so I shall not write anything else.

Signing off,
Reef

___
By tye way, I was trying to tell a story with the song, though I probably failed since I'm not very familiar with music.

A life of sarcasm, rudeness, and popularity that she thought she liked. The dark undertones represent the nagging doubt that people really like her. After all, surely Henry told her of the "principal chose the one she hated most" thing?
After each few bars, the volume increased, and it alternated between a sinister voice to a happy invitation. As if it were fighting a verbal battle with itself, constantly pushing. The 'evil' one grew shorter and shorter after each turn, and the 'pure' one longer. What is she doing with this? I couldn't help but wonder.

Y'know Reef's lines in which she questions Lucy's friendships? This is her thoughts throughout. "Sinister" referring to the thoughts of the Populars being superior, "happy" being a life without them.
Certainly, it could've been much better, but my expectations had been significantly lowered, so the happiness was welcomed. It started out intense and defensive, eventually slowing and softening slightly to a peaceful bliss.

When she snaps.

Maestro: Aftermath

Postby Piefan » Tue Nov 25, 2014 9:17 pm

Dangit, Lychee, did I really miss all that stuff while playing checkers? Wow.

Reef gave me a loose descruption of what happened during the party, and I'm honestly impressed. Didn't think she'd actually do that for reasons obvious...

.... Or not really obvious from these entries alone... But whatever. It's because she seems like the type of person who would hate for people hating her. She probably wouldn't mind a "lowly outcast" like, say, Henry disliking her, but as far as popular people go, she wouldn't do anything

But I sure ain't impressed by Lucy today. She was annoying, more so than most days. You'd think she'd be happy to get all those people off her back. But she was completely sad and sulky.

So anyway, everyone seemed to suddenly hate her, mainly the populars. The others didn't seem to really care. Probably because they weren't at the party. I'm pretty sure me, Reef and Henry were the only one not in the group of populars that were invited.

Not much changed about her. She's still dramatic and stuff. But she is slightly less snobbish, I'll give her that. At least she doesn't compliment herself whenever she can find a way to fit it in conversation.

Lucy's mother apparently was sitting on the stairs the whole party and recorded all the music she played. She's promising to give it to us whenever she makes more copies. I don't actually have a CD player, but she mentioned sheet music. My aunt knows how to play the fiddle. Maybe the next time she visits, she can play it for us.

At lunchtime, the conversation went like this:

"Are you okay, Lucy?"
"No. Though I'm guessing I probably would be a whole lot better if YOU ACTUALLY DID SOMETHING APART FROM PLAY CHECKERS AS EVERYONE ACTUALLY COMMUNICATED WITH OTHER PEOPLE!"
"Oh. Sorry, I guess. You still probably should have invited us out of our game in the first place."
"Shouldn't you be happy that, y'know, those people won't disturb you again?"
"Are you kidding me? Of course not! They were... alright?"
"While I agree with Apollo, if you really can't live without them, then why not make up with them?"

Lucy grinned cheerfully at the idea; Henry's expression was similar to when she was sorting him. She stood up and walked to the nearest table, but Reef glared at Henry.

He shrugged.

Turning back to Lucy, she started desperately humming a song when she was getting close to the other table. I didn't think she could hear it, but her steps slowed when Reef started, and she eventually stopped altogether. And when she did, Reef paused for a few moments, but when she noticed that she wasn't going back, she continued to hum, moving on to a fancy, complicated tune, which caused her to walk back to us.

Did Reef learn hypnotism through music or something? Henry suggested that maybe she found a way to manipulate the sound waves so that when she hummed that specific tune, it caused Lucy's brain to temporarily shut down and stop controlling her muscles.

I seriously wonder he just said. When I asked him politely (my precise words were "WHAT ON EARTH DOES THAT EVEN MEAN?") his reaction was to grit his teeth. And then softly-ish cry out with pain when he accidentally bit the inside of his cheeks.

Info and Calm

Postby Piefan » Wed Nov 26, 2014 8:00 pm

Lychee, finally! My cast is off! And it only took six weeks. Haven't written much since Lucy's birthday thing two weeks ago, but there hasn't been anything happening.

The doctor said I should still be careful with my arm, and I probably will. People annoy me enough without being restrained from punching them in the face with my left arm. Lucy's been fine without her friends talking to her, but she's still dramatic and annoying. Same with Reef and Henry.

I wonder whether I could just go to the principal and beg her to split us up. Probably not. I think they're almost okay now. Weird.

Mid-term exams are next month, and Henry seems to be rubbing off on me, because I'm actually worrying about them.

Well, it's a month 'till they begin, at least. I'll study later. After all, I need to write in you first.

Nothing significant happened lately. Well, apart from the fact Henry needed four notebooks to take down all the notes in classes. Yep, exams are definitely stressing him out. I'm not surprised. Lucy's soft singing during lunchtime probably would have helped if the song hadn't been about death and failure... I swear, she must be doing it on purpose.

Whelp, leaving now. Bye, Lychee!

Crash and Burn

Postby Piefan » Fri Nov 28, 2014 4:15 am

Lychee...

I am going to die if Henry ever asks me to do anything for him ever again. Or, depending, probably just punch him very, very hard.

Yeah, yeah, I know I did say that about 20 times already. But this time it's not in the beginning of mh entry. So it's okay!

But anyway, I should probably explain why. Today at lunchtime, he looked at me and said:

"Apollo. I need your help."

I had a slightly concerned face, but nodded.

"What?"
"I'm not entirely sure on a lightning-related theory of mine."
"I'm pretty sure Reef's the best one with chances of answering your question."
"Yeah, right."

He turned to her then, and asked her something along the lines of,

"Ajdnidoebxowbsa audheixns dwhzwi?"
"Um... Pardon?"

He looked at me with an eyebrow raised.

"No fair! I'm pretty sure those aren't even real words."
"Yes they are. Were you even listening?"
"Of course. You said, 'Ajdnidoebxowbsa audheixns dwhzwi?' if I heard right."
"Well, you didn't. Anyway, I need you to stand out in an empty field durign a thunderstorm."
"You what?"

He shrugged.

"Well, would you rather I tell Reef you insulted her pelt?"
"Do you two realise I am right here?"
"But did you hear precisely what I said?"
"No..."
"Well-"

Henry placed a paw over Lucy's mouth; she slapped it away. Still, though, she didn't say anything more.

"Fine."

Fine, I'm still slightly scared of Reef. But come on, it's not my fault. I think most other people would be afraid of her if she broke their arm and then walked away.

Buut anyway, I think I'm going to faint now, so I'm going to do just that sleep. I'll continue this tomorrow or whenever I wake up. Whichever comes first.
___
Reading Inheritance (Nasuada is personally the best character, by the way) really increased my tendency of more dragged-out conversations.

Chances are, the risk of Apollo actually getting struck will be practically nonexistent. Henry just hates him and wants to scare him. He'll probably just give him random items around the house and make up something with fancy words. Long words are always right. :D

Also I'm running out of title ideas. >.<

OOC Info: Characters

Postby Piefan » Sat Nov 29, 2014 6:39 pm

I'm afraid I don't have a diary entry for you today...

But here's a little background information!

  • Apollo has a very large family.
  • He could disappear for a month and his parents would barely notice. It isn't quite a neglect thing, but they want him to go out and learn for himself.
  • Henry's parents are wolves. It's only some form of recessive genes that cause him to be a simple dog. He's one of the tallest members of the group because of this.
  • Speaking of him, due to the whole wolf thing he's less... domesticated than the others. He does perfectly well in society, but he doesn't see anything wrong with going back to the old times. Sometimes he feels what he refers to as a "call from the wild" during which he goes to the nearest forest.
  • Lucy mainly plays string instruments, and is terrible with woodwind ones.
  • She's quite the liar and her morals... aren't exactly the best. (remember the blackmail thing for her party?) If not for the positive influence from others, she could be a con artist in future.
  • Reef, true to her name, goes scuba diving whenever she gets the chance. Her legs are strong, easily propelling her forward, and she can hold her breath for some time, so it's pretty much a given that she might like it.
  • Despite her initial hatred for Lucy, she in a way looks up to her. Remember the birthday party? She could never stand up to so many people like that.

The next part of the diary's coming soon, promise.

See the Lightning

Postby Piefan » Sat Nov 29, 2014 10:11 pm

I think I'm rested enough to continue writing now... No, I didn't faint, just fell asleep. A very deep, long sleep...

So, I think I should start with explaining exactly what happened at Henry's. My mother doesn't mind me coming home late - she says it's better than being a lonely, friendless loser (thanks, mum) - so I just went to his after school. Inconveniently, it was raining. There is no way that was a coincidence. But I did have an umbrella, so that's a good thing, I guess.

I still remembered the route from last time's visit there, so I went alone while he stayed back for a few minutes. Apparently, he took a shortcut, though, so he still was there when I arrived. His parents seem to disappear whenever someone goes there. Weird.

Moving on from all that stuff, this happened:

"Here. I need you to stand outside and hold this vertically."

He handed (or, um, pawed? We don't have hands...) me a long plastic rod, hitting me in the face as he did it.

"Ow. Vertically means... this direction, right?"
"Don't do that indoors, you're going to smash the light bulbs. But yes."

I walked outside, keeping slightly confident as I did so.
"Oh, and by the way, that includes a chemical that messes with the clouds. It makes it a whole easier for lightning to strike."
"Okay, now you're just doing this on purpose. You're not even taking notes."
"Don't need them."
I grunted, glaring at him before pressing my ears to my skull. Thunder struck, louder than anything else, and I instinctively threw myself to the ground, dropping the stixk. I probably missed the lightning in that state.
"Don't worry, Apollo. You won't die. Um..."
"Stupidity... er... makes you more likely to survive. Lack of brain cells... makes your brain react differently... and... um... causes it to instantly defend itself."
"Oh. Cool."

I straightened myself, ignoring mysterious giggling sounding suspiciously similar to his voice.

"Wait, so being dumb makes me survive better?"
"Allow me to instantly backtrack from that statement... I mean, explain properly. Its reaction will cause many side effects."
"Like what?"
"Insanity. Oh, and it will also make your bones easier to break by purple teenager outcasts wearing a dress."
"The universe-"
"Yes, it's mocking you."

... Okay, I think I'm going back to sleep now.

I was lazy; that's the only excuse I can give for not describing the visit in full. I might continue it and I might not, depends on what my muse wants. So far I'm leaning on continuing, if only because I can't think of any way to fluently shift from the Henry-Apollo thing into a random, character-building conersation between the four.

Title's a play on the phrase "see the light".
I'm socially awkward and sometimes terse - don't mind me.
