This made me lol. Pretty much my reaction as well to the heart.
I don't like the orange-blue-possibly-poison-dart-frog litter, but hopefully I'll like the adults. I just don't like the dark orange and dark blue together. On the other hand, the staff litter is amazing.

Yes, maybe they wanted to use the blue again, but to me it looks more like they intended a firey-pattern and darker markings, rather than another dart frog.

I think it may just be a coincidence. x3 The splotching on the pup isn't like the orange of the frog and the blue legs on the pup have a distinct, purposeful-looking lighter blue marking on them. If it is based on the frog, I'm suspecting she took some artistic initiative and only used the basic orange with blue points from it.
Honestly, other than the color combo and the fact that the blue is on the legs, they don't look at all the same to me.
edit: ah no, wait, fudge that 'lighter marking' thing. I took another look and I'm pretty sure it's just shading. x3
Though I will stand by that the execution isn't much like the frog at all.

Considering the fact that there is a thread 793 pages long filled with ideas and suggestions for pets, I don't think they'd have to resort to past designs...o-O Just saying.
Possibly. Or maybe they just simply forgot, it happens.... but I'm still leaning toward the idea that it's fire-intended.

I don't think it's based off frogs at all. Darker markings on the cold areas are pretty common in animals, and I think they just happened to go with an orange and blue color scheme. If they were based off frogs I'm sure more than one species would have been used. Plus the markings that we're going to get on the adult will make them look that much more different.

I'll have to agree with this; I understand the coloring is similar, but I just don't think frog when I look at these...the texture, for one, doesn't look like the smooth skin of a frog. Not to mention orange+blue isn't a color combination based solely on Poison Dart Frogs.
Fire, when very,
very hot, can be blue. So the blue on the dog merely looks to me like the edges of the flames which are extremely high temperature. Textures looks more like fire to.

I agree. It looks as if it's hot coals. ;3
