Thanks for the tips! How do you find out your base coordinates?

You're welcome x3 I had to play quite a few worlds before I felt like I could manage without help of the wiki xD

As Bookworm said, just press F3. It can be hard to find at first, but I think it's in the second section, and then it says x: *insert number here* y: *insert number here* z: *insert number here*
Y is what level you're on (height) while x and z shows where you are on that level. You don't really have to pay attention to y unless you're mining.

So, just write down x and z and then whenever you want to go home, press F3 and go in different directions until the numbers are going up or down, depending on which number your base coordinates have.
