Welcome! This is a wild horse RP, as the title suggests. However, this isn't just some mares and stallions getting mates. This also isn't just one big herd. No. This is for real. In this RP, horses will mostly behave like they really do in the wild.

Wild horse terms

Glossary

Foal- a horse under the age of 1 year
Yearling- a horse between the ages of 1-3 years

Colt- a younger male horse
Filly- a younger female horse
Mare- a mature female horse, usually over 3 years old
Stallion- a mature male horse, usually over 3 years old

Band/harem/herd- a group of horses made up of a stallion and his mares and foals. Colts are kicked out when they come to maturity.
Bachelor- a stallion or male yearling that has not yet started a herd of his own. Bachelors will sometimes join together to steal mares from herds or will walk alone, occasionally harassing band stallions until they manage to get a mare of their own

Snaking- a harsh way of getting a mare into a herd, and is how stallions steal mares from other stallions. The band stallion will lower his head and flatten his ears, galloping behind the mare, chasing her into his herd. If a mare is being snaked, there is little she can do to resist the stallion before being forced to go where he wants her to.
Courting- a more gentle way to bring a mare into a herd, or to tell them where to go if a stallion is moving the band to a new location. A stallion will nudge the mare in the direction he wants her to go.

Herd Dynamics

Lead mare- a mare that is chosen by the lead stallion to lead the herd to watering holes, and also takes the lead when they migrate to the canyon/valley each year in the fall. Generally the favorite or first mare of the band stallion.

Band mares- the rest of the mares in the band, mares are like prized possessions or trophies to a stallion.

Band stallion- the stallion of a herd. He steals mares from other bands and mates with his mares in the spring. He is the one responsible for protecting his herd against predators and rival stallions. If a band stallion dies, the mares may either split up or the stallion's eldest son may take over the herd. Sometimes, stallions form joint bands, sharing mares and duties.
Fillies- offspring of the mares and the stallion. When they reach maturity, they may either leave to find a herd of their own or stay with their birth herd.
Colts- offspring of the mares and the stallion. When they reach maturity, they are kicked out of the band to prevent inbreeding.
Bands do not have specific territories, but generally stay away from each other unless the two stallions are familiar with each other.

Life in the Wild

Breeding and foaling season- Mares are in heat from spring to early fall and while there are mares in heat, stallion aggression spikes as they try to steal and breed with the mares. Foals are born about a year later, in the warm spring and summer months and their mothers come back into heat a few days to a week after they give birth. Usually only one foal is born, and twins are uncommon.
Life milestones-

Birth- Foals are born in spring and summer, usually only one at a time. They usually stand within two hours of being born and stick close to their mothers.
Weaning- Foals can survive without their mother’s milk at around 6 months, but still need the protection of a herd so they don’t get killed by predators.
Maturity- most horses are capable of breeding at around 18 months of age, but only really become interested in breeding at two years. This is when colts are kicked out of their birth bands.
Death- Wild horses generally only live into their middle to late teens at most, having had to deal with harsh winters and slim rations for all of their life takes a toll. At this point the body is starting to go past prime and into middle age, which leaves wild horses at a disadvantage when dealing with predators.

Rules

1. This is a realistic horse roleplay.

- No horse has powers, wings, etc.
-There are no territories. A band stallion and his mares just roam the land freely.
- There aren't any 'mates'. A band stallion mates with all his mares.
- No flawless horses.
- Realistic colors, you can use drawings as long as they are realistic(and yours or colored in on free use lines).
- Horses will die, nothing lives forever
- All horses must start out as a bachelor/lone mare. That means a bachelor has to snake/court a mare into his herd before he is considered a band stallion.
- Mares have to wait one RP year before they can have their foal.

-Try to remember that twins and premature/late births are rare/uncommon. If wanting twins, premature, or late births, PM me about it first and I will give you an answer. This is mainly just to make sure that we don't have like 5 sets of twins in one year.
- Mares don't really have a say in band matters, and can hardly do anything at all when being snaked.

2. General

-Genders will not be even, try to make more mares than stallions.
-When a band stallion is offline, you can post saying you’re going to attempt to snake a mare just don't complete the action without the band stallion's RPer giving a reply.
- Don't kill someone's horse unless the other user agrees
- Use fades to black(or something like that, just as long as you don't go into any detail) if your character is mating or giving birth
- You cannot be in your own herd, with the exception of foals/relatives.

3. User rules

- Follow the site rules, especially the ones on no links/pictures in each post, no force-breeding, and no power-playing.
- Grammar, punctuation, and spelling are greatly appreciated, and while this isn’t semi-lit, the more you can post the easier it is to work with.
-Curse words, if used, should be censored with asterisks. (ex: Sh*t)
- Don't quote your posts unless someone requests it of you and don't bump on the thread. If anything PM your RP partners if you are wondering about when you'll get a reply. Or even better use the discussion thread.
- Stay active.
- You can have an unlimited amount of horses, just remember to play them all.

Territory

Utasia- Utasia is simply the name of the land. There's nothing special about it, it's just what horses refer the entire area as.

The Mountain- The mountain in Utasia is where the horses spend spring, summer, and some of fall. After the recent wildfire there isn't as much forage any more, but there are new forests forming. It's not very steep, but it abruptly ends at a cliff at the top. But beware: mountain lions are constantly on the prowl.

The Watering Hole- The watering hole is located at the base of the mountain, on the opposite side of the mountain as the forest. It's generally the biggest source of water, but small ponds, puddles, and streams can be found on the mountain, though they are much rarer than before. In the summer, the streams and everything dry out, making the watering hole the only reliable source of water. It's about half its normal size in summer.

The Valley- The valley is where all the herds migrate in fall. This is where they spend their winters; the walls of the valley help shelter them from the wind and storms. There is a stream snaking through it, but since they only come here in the winter, it is frozen over and the horses have to eat snow to quench their thirst, or break the ice. They dig through the snow to get to grass and roots to eat or eat the bark off trees.

The Dead Forest- The dead forest is located at the base of the mountain on the opposite side of the mountain as the watering hole, almost all of it was burned up in the wildfire and it's still only in it's early stages of recovery. Some cougars and even wolves lurk here, so watch out. Horses have to journey through here to reach the valley on the other side when migrating for the winter. A few small forested parts of land are littered here and there on the mountain.

The Cliff- The cliff is the abrupt drop at the top of the mountain, it's about the only thing that looks the same. Up here the lush grass vanishes and it's all rocks and dirt and dust. A fall from here will surely kill you.

Season

Mid-Summer! - The land is baking and the plants that had started to come back are now withering under the sun. The long periods of heat and dryness are punctuated by thunderstorms that pelt down rain. Mares who have not been covered are likely still in heat, and bands may want to be thinking about their plans for fall and winter. Stallions are still on edge, though the initial craze of spring has passed.

The length of the seasons is influenced by member activity and other factors.

Also!! I'm putting it as four years having passed, so for an example, any mares that were pregnant in the previous version 3, their babies will be three yrs. AGE YOUR HORSES THAT YOU'RE CARRYING OVER ACCORDINGLY

Name meaning: Cormac is Irish in origin and means "son of defilement" or "son of the chariot".
Personality: Being an 'older' stallion, he seems to have a more level head on his shoulders. However, he also has 'old time' values. He treats his mares well to a point, but at the end of the day doesn't think they have anything between their ears except air. In reality, he's probably the one lacking a few brain cells. He doesn't understand multi-stallion bands and quite honestly he both scoffs at them in mockery and shies away in fear. With foals, he takes a 'firm but fair' approach, though he tends to be a bit too aloof for this to work.

Personality: Sahara is fairly soft spoken due to being orphaned completely at one year. As she has grown though, she has realized herself as a full fledged mare. The death of her foal and the disappearance of her previous stallion cause her to mature quickly and become very independent. She has not been in a band for a while and will have to get used to her freedom being restricted. However, since she was forced to grow up, she does tend to have some sage advice and an expert grasp of the lay of the land. Despite the wisdom experience has forced on her, she is still getting used to being a 'reasonable adult' and her younger, more playful side will definitely show under the right circumstances.

Breed: Arabian mix, but the other breeds in her are so dilute you can't tell what they are. Just that she's not pure Arab.
Body build: Kali is lithe as an Arabian should be, thin and refined. She has an almost straight face with only a small dish, and her hindquarters are a bit more muscle bound than some other Arabs. She usually weighs around 950 lbs.
Height: 14.2 1/2hh
Coat color: Red dun
Eye color: A gold amber.
Mane and tail: Her tail is of long length, reaching down to just above the ground. It goes from a light chestnut at the top to nearly black at its tips. Her mane tends to stay near the end of her neck, though it grows out a bit more on occasion. It follows the same gradient of color as her tail and both are slightly wavy.
Hoof color: A very dark brown.
Markings: A white blaze going from the end of her upper lip to the middle of her forehead. She also has the classic dun markings, the dorsal stripe and the barring on her legs.

Name meaning: Kalila is a name of Arabic origin and meaning 'beloved'. However, she prefers to be called Kali, after the Hindu goddess of time and destruction.
Personality: You're about to meet one of the most shallow, stuck up horses in the world. Or at least, that's what most other horses label Kali as. In part they're right, she treats herself as if she were royalty and seeks out stallions that do the same. In a way her mindset is that of a bull-headed stallion, but it is only in view of herself that she takes that perspective of mares being trophies. And in her mind, she is the greatest trophy of all. Why? She thinks of herself as superior to other horses, of finer blood and stature. Now, a mare's head doesn't just fill up with this stuff on its own. She has gotten these thoughts from people. You heard right, humans who coveted their horse and treated her like she was the most important thing in the world. Not to mention from stallions once she got out into the wild.

Even if you manage to treat her 'right,' you still might not get to keep her. This girl can't seem to say no, whether it be to stallions or dares from fellow mares. However, if you think the solution is to jealously guard her or set up strict rules, we've got a problem. She's not one to be confined and while she may be in your herd, it doesn't mean she trusts you one bit. She also has this habit of troublemaking. Kali will get into a herd and from there she will turn it upside down from the inside out. Adding to this prideful and troublesome demeanor is her love of attention, particularly from stallions. To be fought over by some stallions ranks up there as one of her favorite things. She is aware that some mares, and maybe even some stallions, particularly dislike mares such as herself. However, with a short temper and a willingness to tear at others with words and hooves, she can usually handle herself.

However, who could really ever believe that this troublesome, prideful nature is her true personality? She does, unfortunately. It will take a long time and someone dedicated to her before she peels back the ugly outer layers of her personality to shine light on what really lies within her heart.

History: Kalila began in the heart of the Middle East. It was there she grew from foal into young mare, that part of her life had been remarkably uneventful. She had been brought into a town when she was three, for what purpose she does not know, but a clever stallion freed her by undoing her lead rope. This stallion, her, and two other mares escaped into the desert for six months. In this time she got pregnant by the stallion. After the six months, they were captured in a small port town. They were swiftly sold to people overseas, so the humans who captured them would not be suspected of stealing. However, the people in who had bought her got more than they bargained for. The mare was obviously pregnant at this point and the people had to scramble to prepare for the birth of the foal. A few months later, Kali gave birth to a black colt. Soon after this her new owners' focus shifted to her colt and away from her. Using the same trick her old stallion had used, she freed herself one day. To run away from her foal was disturbingly easy, and she's never looked back since then.

Personality: He's young and fresh and likes to have fun. He is not very prideful, and knows his place for the most part. He was taught by his father that he would have to wait on having a band until he was five, and blank respects his advice. However, when spring rolls around, he finds himself tempted by all the sweet scents. There's a real chance that this well-intentioned boy will be corrupted...

Ｋｎｏｗｉｎｇ Ｙｏｕ Ｂｅｔｔｅｒ

• Behavior- Shatter is the average stallion to most. He is very stubborn and head strong, doing his best to hold his own in any sort of challenge. This stallion doesn't like to be messed with when he isn't in the mood for such things. Shatter can be very possessive and not so much affectionate. He will occasionally return any affection given but the stallion is mostly preoccupied with protecting a herd when he has one. He sees mares as trophies more than anything, along with them being his key to passing on his bloodlines. When he has the chance to have a mare, he'd take it without a hesitation, unless the stallion was far older than him, with more experience. If Titan came across a band formed by a younger stallion, he'd challenge him for the entire band instead of just snaking a mare here and there.
• Background- Shattered Titanium was born into a average sized herd of six mares and of course his father. The young colt was the smallest of his many siblings all ranging in different ages at the time. He had a pretty average young life to begin with. His father didn't manage to keep the herd during his first year and a new stallion took over, chasing out most of the juveniles right off the start. Shatter was kicked out at the average age not long after when he began to get cocky around the mares. When he was casted out, he wandered for a month or two before coming across a bachelor group, the eldest stallion being around the age of twelve. He fit in perfectly well with the other stallions, casual fighting occurred for him just to gain his experience up. When he hit the age of five, he dispersed from the group and went on the look out for mares. That year, he managed a herd of three mares, though he sired five foals, having caught two herd mares before their stallion covered them and why the stallion was preoccupied with his other mares. The next spring, when his herd consisted of three mares and three foals, the stallion tried to keep his band from others. It wasn't until early summer that a much older and experienced stallion took his herd from him and left the young stallion without mares for the first time after experiencing herd life. Shatter made his way back into the bachelor band and simply roamed for the next few years, attempting to build a herd many times but failing in more ways that one.

Zeus is quite the character. He thinks very highly of himself and since his mother was only a brief memory and his father was an insane asylum in himself, he survived thanks to Rosie. He remembers the terrified mare fondly but only when he isn't busy judging others or trying to find a 'prize'.
