the familiar movement of the cats surrounding him were those he were used to. their movements were often those that would wake him first, that is if the sun had not shone into his eyes first. his left eye opened partially to watch what the others were doing. most were, as he expected, waking up from their rest and heading outside. despite how desperately the tom wanted to stay exactly where he was, curled up in a tight ball, not wanting to be disturbed, he knew that sticking to the den all day wasn't one the leader would take lightly. groggily, the tom rose to his paws, taking a moment to stretch out his stiffened limbs before making his way out into
the light.

He could easily tell from the sight of the other cats he was one of the last to awaken. though, this didn't bother him too much- he didn't have an apprentice to watch out for as many of the other cats did. the unfortunate side to this, however, was that the tom didn't have much to do all day- especially if he wasn't assigned to a patrol. with a yawn, crowfur made his way over to a less-populated area of the camp. upon arriving, the tom slowly sat down, observing the clan with narrowed eyes.

Leafstar watched as Redstrike came into camp with his hunting patrol, her soft gray-green eyes shadowed with longing and slight regret. He looked especially handsome, his orange tabby body rippling with muscles and emanating power, yet his eyes seemed so cold and distant to her now. Leafstar often caught herself missing him, the heartbreak from four moons before still fresh and raw in her heart. Even though they'd both agreed it was best to go their separate ways, Leafstar hadn't ever stopped loving Redstrike; they had been so much more than just mates. They had been best friends, too.

You ruined that, Leafstar told herself. She averted her eyes and sighed, her eyes instead catching Emberpaw and Cottonpaw as they streaked across camp, a little bubble of warmth forming in her stomach as this in turn made her think of her own kits. At least they could be free of her burden of a secret; they didn't have to know what she did. Again, Leafstar forced herself to redirect her thoughts. Those thoughts were four moons old; it was time for her to move on with her life, whether or not she and Redstrike could ever fix anything with even their friendship.

Leafstar watched as the camp began refilling with cats returning from border patrols, hunting patrols, and solo hunts. She almost missed it when she could hang out with other cats without them monitoring what they say or making sure they were extra polite or extra generous just because she was the leader. She wouldn't want to be anything but leader, of course; she didn't regret her duty or her responsibility, she just wished it didn't make life so lonely. Redstrike had been the only cat to treat her like she was normal, but now even that was clearly gone.

Frostfire trotted into camp, three fat mice swinging from her jaw as she made her way to the fresh-kill pile. Of course she would have a good kill, she thought proudly as she set the still-warm bodies on top; her mentor had been Leafstar, only the brightest hunter in the clan. Frostfire flicked her tail with pride, grabbed a juicy-looking vole beside her new showcase, and continued away to scope out a hood conversation she could get in on. Redstrike and Fawndapple and various other cats were talking, and she caught a mention of how to correctly train your apprentice- boring. Frostfire had one of the best apprentices, she thought; no matter how she taught him, Foxpaw would turn out great. Not that she would slack off at all, of course; he was Leafstar's son, after all, and Frostfire had never let go of her apprenticehood idolization of her mentor.

Frostfire continued on, but all the conversations going on seemed so boring; why did warriors think that they all had to talk about super-mature stuff like the weather? Nobody seemed to be able to have fun anymore. Frostfire remembered when most of them were apprentices; the weather wasn't quite so note-worthy then, now was it? Mentioning the weather, to Frostfire, was in the book of lame conversation-starters. Spotting Foxpaw hovering around alone across camp, she made a beeline for him; she decided she'd be productive.
"Hey, Foxpaw!" she called to get his attention before stopping in front of her apprentice. "What is the first thing you should do when you're hunting alone and you catch the scent of prey?" she asked immediately. Frostfire loved to switch it up; sometimes she'd ask random questions that had nothing to do with training, sometimes she'd ask questions to do with training, sometimes she would just drag him along, and most of the time she came up with some other way to start talking to him.

This time, however, seemed the time to ask something they had gone over but that she hadn't ever specifically said. Of course, he'd probably over think it and answer wrong because he was trying so hard to be right, but that was almost the point; she could teach him before they were even leaving camp!

"Mmm..." Lionpaw groaned as he slowly woke up, blinking in the sudden bright sunhigh sunlight shining on his face. He shuffled back a bit as he yawned, watching with interest as Cottonpaw and Emberpaw ripped out of the den. The only other apprentice in there with him was Blackpaw; they had been the only apprentices on the Night Watch, so it made sense that they were the ones left sleeping in late. The other she-cat mentioned this as she called after their denmates, but Lionpaw grinned; it was clear she wasn't really mad.

Lionpaw wasn't, either; he liked Cottonpaw and Emberpaw, and it wasn't like they'd woken him up out of spite. Besides, he had forgotten all about it in a moment when his stomach rumbled, not-so-subtly hinting that he was, indeed, ravenously hungry... as always, of course. With one last little stretch, Lionpaw left the apprentice den and padded over to the fresh-kill pile. He was about to just mindlessly pick up a fresh-looking mouse to eat when he stopped himself. Has anyone fed the elders? he wondered, glancing toward the elders' den. It seemed peaceful over there, but Lionpaw knew fully well that if nobody brought them prey, the elders got cranky pretty quickly.

He'd been scolded by his mother before for not thinking of others first, and he really didn't want to be yelled at by her again. It was embarrassing, especially since she was the leader. With that thought, Lionpaw scooped up the mouse and took it to the elders' den, where Snakefang, Doveflight, and Adderfang were lazing in the sun.
"Is that all you brought?" Doveflight grumbled, eyeing the mouse with a scowl. Lionpaw glanced at her warily as he set the mouse down, but Snakefang put a tail on his shoulder and gave a lazy chuckle, a smile on his face. "Don't mind her. It's plenty." Lionpaw blinked, glancing at Adderfang uncertainly- the she-cat usually jumped right into story-telling -but a long snore came from her open mouth, and Lionpaw figured he could leave.

Padding back to the fresh-kill pile, Lionpaw grabbed another mouse and padded over to Oddpaw, dropping it in front of his denmate.
"Want to share?" he offered, nodding toward the plump creature.

Blue eyes scanned the camp clearing, but Blackpaw was nowhere to be seen. Where is my apprentice? I'd like to get some training done today, Nightfrost thought, licking her chest fur a lick. She let out a bored yawn, and then enjoyed a luxurious stretch as she started towards the fresh-kill pile. It was nicely stocked, and the squirrel Redstrike contributed sat nicely on the top. It was a small squirrel, but Nightfrost didn't want to eat too much before she worked with Blackpaw. That squirrel would be perfect. Upon reaching the fresh-kill pile, she just picked up the end of Redstrike and Fawndapple's conversation. Although Fawndapple was older than Nightfrost, the black she-cat believed that the cream colored senior warrior was naive if she thought apprentices didn't need to be critiqued customarily. She couldn't help but get her two sense in. "An apprentice with real potential won't let a mentor doing their job get in the way of success."

Rosepaw twitched her whiskers mischievously. She was crouched low, her black fur concealed for the most part by the long grass she had wandered off in. Her prey of choice, a stray monarch butterfly, was oblivious to the danger. "The mighty hunter draws nearer to her prey, ready to pounce..." Rosepaw commentated the hunt, her tail tip twitching. The butterfly's wings slowly folded open, and then closed again. It's feelers caressed the golden flower it was perched upon. Pretty blue berries around the butterflies' flower added a certain beauty to the entire scene. "Any minute, and this guy will be toast…" Rosepaw dashed forward, stopping just before she ran into the butterfly's flowers. It took off into the air, twirling in circles around the black she-cat as if it were lost. Rosepaw batted gently at the butterfly, not actually wanting to harm the little fellow. After giving chase for a few fox lengths, Rosepaw ceased and perked her ears at the sound of her name. Crap. She had forgotten she came here with her mentor to collect herbs. Rosepaw poked her head slowly over the tall grass, spotting the tom looking in her direction. She rose to her paws, and bounded over to her mentor. "Sorry, Tigerstep! I saw a butterfly, it was so pretty…" She trailed off, realizing her excuse was lame. Maybe if she had found some juniper berries her mentor wouldn't have a reason to be so critical. Rosepaw felt a wave of excitement wash over her. She had found some juniper berries where the butterfly had been resting! "Tigerstep, I think I found a few juniper berries, actually. Over there!" She gestured with her tail where she had just been, hoping for her mentor's approval.

Oddpaw's bicolored eyes followed his denmates until they disappeared from sight near the warriors' den. He hoped they wouldn't get in too much trouble for disturbing any warriors that have been on night watch. "Want to share?" A voice brought his attention away from the she-cats, and Oddpaw turned his attention to the mouse at his feet and another of his den mates, Lionpaw. Oddpaw widened his eyes in surprise at the request of the golden tom. Oddpaw was headstrong and temperamental at times, so it wasn't often that his denmates offered to share fresh-kill with him. He realized that he still hadn't responded after several seconds, and his stomach growled as if to say he should.

Oddpaw let out a purr. "Sure, Lionpaw. Thanks!" He said, realizing how hungry he actually was. He lowered himself to the ground, taking a bite of the mouse. Immediately the warmth of the creature filled him with energy, and he savored the taste. After the morsel slid down his throat Oddpaw said, "Lionpaw, what's it like having your mother be clan leader?" He was genuinely curious, and he thought about the pros for a moment. Maybe he wouldn't get in so much trouble, and cats would respect you more. Oddpaw looked on the other side of things, thinking of the cons. Cats might expect more of you… His thoughts trailed off.
The future lies before you;
like a field of fallen snow.
Be careful how you tread it;
for every step will show.

They'll judge you by your past;
Which makes it do or die.
Unless of course my darling;
You spread your wings and flii.

The sarcastic medicine cat rolled his eyes at Rosepaw's rather lame excuse. "I'd expect something like that out of a kit," Tigerstep retorted, rolling his amber eyes. A butterfly! How lame of an excuse. His tail tip twitched with irritation, and he glared down at his apprentice. How was he supposed to teach Rosepaw the path of a medicine cat if she was so...jumpy? The dark furred apprentice had the attention span of, well, a kit. She was smart - a requirement, of course, to being a medicine cat's apprentice - but Tigerstep had trouble refining her. His apprentice was full of boundless energy. He sighed with irritation; only StarClan knows of his troubles. He began to scoop up his herbs when Rosepaw excitedly declared that she had seen a juniper berry bush. Tigerstep's ears twitched with suppressed approval. 'Now that's what I'm talking about,' he thought, looking down at Rosepaw's eager face. Instead, he maintained his rough exterior and gruffed, "Let's go."

And, surely enough, there it was! The bush laid not too far from where Tigerstep was. His heart rose with slight pride as he padded forward, tail curved above the ground. Approaching the bush, he gently set the catmint and lavender at his paws and sniffed at the berries. Of course, he knew that these berries were harmless, but being cautious of berries was a habit of his instilled by old Thistleleaf. As an apprentice, he recalled Thistleleaf conducting a whole lesson on various types of berries - from beneficial ones to lethal ones. His mentor had wished for Tigerstep to know these berries by heart, the tabby knew, but that still didn't shake the feeling of agitation back then. Reaching forward, Tigerstep nipped at the stem of the berries and collected the fallen berries with a gentle sweep of his paw. He looked around, searching for a leaf to hold the berries in. "Rosepaw, get me a leaf, will you?" he called to his apprentice, not bothering to throw her a glance.

As he waited, a breeze ruffled Tigerstep's short fur, and his head snapped up in alarm. His intense stare was fixated over the forest in front of him. The breeze had carried over the unmistakable scent of...strangers. His ears stood erect as he watched. The scent was definitely cat, so the medicine cat felt slightly relieved that there was no fox or badger. But, still, the chances of the stranger being a dangerous rogue were too high. Perhaps he should alert a patrol? 'No, patrols just returned,' he reminded himself, faintly recalling seeing cats return as he and Rosepaw exited to search for herbs. Even if he sent Rosepaw back to camp, he knew that she would not return in time. So the only choice was to approach these cats right? But that didn't seem to be needed, for these cats' scents grew stronger by the second. Were they...walking towards him?

There it was! Right there!

Yes, Emberpaw could see it now. The mottled she-cat could make out the squirrel's ever so fluffy tail and rounded quarters, the rest of its body hidden by tall strands of grass. Emberpaw could feel excitement twitch in her paws. She had never caught a squirrel before, after all. The last time she had been out hunting with her mentor, Mousefur, she had just missed the stupid creature. Her pride, as a result, was a bit damaged. For as long as she had been an apprentice (exactly two moons), Emberpaw had been acknowledged as one of the better hunters. She brought back enough prey to challenge the older apprentices, and her techniques were almost flawless.

Almost. The wretched squirrel just had to prove her wrong.

So, that's why Emberpaw wasn't going to let this creature escape. 'Tail still,' she reminded herself. Her pink nose twitched and her whiskers laid erect against the wind. Yes, this was perfect! She was downwind; the squirrel would never be able to scent her now. 'Just a little more...' Emberpaw crept closer and closer to the squirrel, avoiding the patches of yellowed, crunchy leaves. The foolish squirrel remained oblivious to its inevitable death as it examined a particularly nice acorn.

'Now!'

"What -" Emberpaw gasped incoherently as a weight flung itself on her. Her yellow eyes widened in startled. What was happening? Her mind scrambled, unable to comprehend. 'Am I being attacked?' she panicked to herself. But a laugh registered in her ears, and her eyesight cleared just in time to see her friend's fluffy white tail trail out of the den's entrance. "Cottonpaw!" she cried out after her friend, forgetting the fact that other apprentices may still be sleeping. "I'm going to shred your tail!" she threatened Cottonpaw, scrambling to her paws. Her limbs ached from behind folded underneath her body weight for the whole night, but that didn't stop the mottled she-cat from bolting out of the den.

She exploded into the camp clearing, bits of moss and bedding hanging off of her long fur. 'Where is she?' she thought to herself, looking around camp with widened, alert yellow eyes. "You can't hide from me," Emberpaw threatened, still surveying the camp. Cats were already awake, and Emberpaw was slightly aware of the fact that several may be staring at her as if she had grown a third tail. Hopefully she hadn't roused any of them, but she seriously doubted that she had. Where was Cottonpaw? Ah! 'If I were Cottonpaw, I know where I would hide.' Ha, Cottonpaw was in trouble now!

As silently as she could manage, Emberpaw approached the warriors' den. Cottonpaw was certainly not gutsy enough to hide inside the den, but enough to hide near it. Ha, did Cottonpaw think that a warriors' den could scare her off of revenge? Ridiculous! Emberpaw's ears swiveled at the huffing and puffing of suppressed laughter, and she knew that she had her prey cornered. Not unlike how she would stalk prey, Emberpaw approached the rock and bunched up her muscles, springing over the medium sized boulder and onto her fluffy companion. "Got'cha!" she laughed victoriously.

                    Bounce hesitated, pausing in her steps. She had not thought about it. Of course, the two were not familiar enough with the ways of the Clan to know any better. As Bounce contemplated name change, she deiced it was a small price to pay for the safety of her kits. She knew Maggie understood, and decided not to take her anger to heart, thought she could not bring herself to speak and say so outloud.

                    Suddenly, she caught a scent on the wavering breeze. She gasped, turning stiff and crouching, putting her tail on Maggie's bad to silently signal her to do the same. As they sat silently, the sound of rustling and voices reached her ears. The first she did not recognize, but it sounded young and innocent. Hardly a threat. Then the other spoke. A voice she could never mistake. Still, she remained frozen to the spot by a whole new kind of fear. The rustling grew closer. She peeked over a fern in front of her and saw the two walking. Tigerstep and a young she-cat. They were coming nearer, until they stopped at a bush. She watched as he picked some barries then stood stiff as the winds changed. He knew they were there. There was hardly any point in hiding it now. Slowly, Bounce stood and testily made her way forward at a slow pace. "Tigerstep?" She murmured quietly, hoping her would recognize her before hostile impulse set it. She stiffened nearly immediately, realizing the mistake she had made. She had called him by his name. She stood, trying to keep her composure and hoped no one had noticed.

There was no doubt about it; the cats were walking towards him and Rosepaw. He peered over his shoulder at Rosepaw, tail waving very slowly as a sign for her to be alert. What did these cats want? Were they lost? His back arched slightly at the thought of intruders. Even blind rogues knew to avoid StoneClan territory - the markers were fresh! How dare these cats even have the audacity to cross the borders? Tigerstep sat still as the cats approached him, though his stance remained erect and ready to pounce into battle. After all, he was a warrior before he was a medicine cat. And although it has been many moons since he had sparred, the tabby was still confident that he could take on any cat in a fight. Rosepaw on the other hand...Tigerstep hesitated. He hadn't had the time to get a warrior to teach Rosepaw how to fight. Medicine cats were not only limited to healing; they needed to know how to defend for themselves, too.

There they were! Tigersteps' amber eyes narrowed as two silhouettes formed out of hiding, and Tigerstep unsheathed his claws and his fur bristled in response. "Intruders," he hissed at the faceless cats, claws digging slits into the earth. "Turn back and I won't shred your ears to pieces." But these cats didn't seem to heed his warning. If anything, they seemed to walk closer! Tigerstep watched, confused, as one cat stood forward from its companion. That certain cat padded into the clearing, and Tigerstep felt his knees become weak. The cat was...Bounce. His ears flattened against his skull as he attempted to maintain his composure. After all, he couldn't allow Rosepaw to know that he recognized this she-cat. But, then Bounce named him, and Tigerstep inwardly groaned. Great, what was he going to tell Rosepaw now?

"Bounce," he stated as neutrally as he could, straightening his stance and sheathing his claws. He looked at Bounce's companion, also a she-cat. "What are you two doing here?" he growled. His heart ached with an all too familiar pain - he had felt it, too, the night he became a medicine cat - as he addressed Bounce as if she were no more than a stranger to him. But he had to. There was no choice. He scrutinized Bounce and her nameless companion. Bounce seemed plumper than usual, her belly rounded with something Tigerstep had seen very often. Kits? He stared at Bounce, unable to comprehend anything. A bit of dread crept into his heart, for he knew who the father of her kits were. Of course, how could he not? There was no other possibility.

                    She hesitated, ears flattening when she heard his threat, However, she forced herself to be brave and continued on. She stopped a ways before him, unable to bring herself any closer. She released a breath of relief she wasn't aware she had been holding when he dropped his guard. An unexpected flutter was felt in her chest when she heard him speak her name, but she choked it down.

                    She shuffled her paws, self conscious of her belly she knew he had noticed. Once again, doubt reached her mind. She shook it away and forced her voice to sound confident and unaffected. "I have come to join the Clan," she announced. If I am welcome. She hoped she would not have to bring up her kits in order to gain enough sympathy to be accepted. She preferred not to speak of them aloud, though she felt horridly guilty about it. Some degree of her was ashamed, but most of her was disgusted at the twinge. Of course she could not be ashamed of her own kits. She loved them, and she knew she would love them more once they came. Perhaps part of her was only afraid they would not be loved by anyone else. "Maggie here was only escorting me." The emotion was nearly overwhelming, but she forced herself to remain stoney-faced as she awaited Tigerstep's response.

    Being the one to be easily distracted, Maggielooked over at a two-leg nest, it's smokey red brick made it look like a sore-thumb. However, she could hear the voices of other cats, one unfamiliar than what she's usually used to. Seeing as she fell behind a few steps, she caught up, halting to see a cat talking to Bounce. "Oh-this is your territory isn't it.... oh, Bounce who is this?" Her voice showed curiosity, not listening to the conversation they just had while she wasn't paying attention, she gazed over at the hostility the two cats were showing. Her tail lashed, feeling the need to defend when it was necessary.

    However, being the clutz she didn't realize that Bounce knew this cat, which would have frightened her slightly even though she knew Bounce had gone through some weird events she has never told her. Looking over at Bounce, she inquired softly. "Who is this?"

Rosepaw nodded once. "Of course, Tigerstep," she said, turning to find a leaf for the berries. Hopefully this would make up for her spacing off earlier. Why did she always do that? What if a cat required immediate attention, and she was spacing out? Tigerstep wouldn't be able to guide her forever, so the sooner she got her act together the better. Rosepaw shook her head to clear, and plucked a large still green maple leaf from a fallen branch. She started back towards Tigerstep, but dropped the leaf in surprise after she picked up a foreign scent. Intruders. Suddenly alarmed, Rosepaw rushed back to where Tigerstep was. "Tigerstep, do you smell-" She cut off, realizing that her mentor was already on his paws, ready to confront whatever the danger was. It wasn't a fox or badger, she could tell because the smell wasn't musky. Two dark figures continued towards the two of them, and Rosepaw's fur bristled out of trepidation. What would happen if it was an ambush? She felt safe with Tigerstep there, after all he had been a warrior before a medicine cat.

An unfamiliar voice brought Rosepaw back from her pessimistic thoughts, but she couldn't quite make out what it said. Her eyes refocused, and a she-cat stood before them. A new scent tickled Rosepaw's nose, one she had smelt before. She walked over to the strange she-cat, no longer apprehensive. Giving the she-cat's belly a sniff, her thoughts were confirmed. Pregnant. "How long have you been expecting?" Rosepaw asked, curiously. She had always been fascinated with mother cats and their kits. After hearing that the lone queen wanted to join the clan, Rosepaw turned to Tigerstep. "Tigerstep, she has to come back with us!" Rosepaw cocked her head slightly to the side as her mentor called the cat by name. Did they know each other? Did Tigerstep know both of these cats? No. That didn't make sense. Rosepaw pushed the thought aside, still hopeful the two loners would be allowed to join the clan.

The future lies before you;
like a field of fallen snow.
Be careful how you tread it;
for every step will show.

They'll judge you by your past;
Which makes it do or die.
Unless of course my darling;
You spread your wings and flii.

♀ ;; ♍ ;; twenty-four moons ;; loner ;; located in Clan territory ;; with Maggie, Tigerstep, Rosepaw
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I keep on running
I’m building bridges that I know you never wanted
Look for my heart
You stole it away
Now on every single road that I could take
I want you to burn my bridges down
Set me on fire
You set me on fire
You can burn my bridges down
                    Pressure began to overcome Bounce as Maggie continued to ask her who the tom was. "Maggie, please," she hissed under her breath. She was under enough pressure as it is. She felt she needed to explain nothing at the moment, having said all she wanted to already.

                    She looked up and drew a breath to speak once more, but was interrupted. She ashed her back when she found that enother cat had stuck their nose under her belly and took an impulsive step back. When the other cat backed away, Bounce realized she was not much more than a kit herself. She relaxed and settled into a sitting position. The younger cat meant no harm, she was sure. Merely curious as all young ones were. She offered Rosepaw a soft, encouraging smile which she used to hide her doubt and sorrow behind. "About a moon," she answered softly, avoiding eye contact with Tigerstep. She appreciated the younger she-cat's eagerness and willingness to help. She hoped she would inspire Tigerstep to do the same.
