The young tom froze, not daring to breathe in for a moment. He had just heard the scurry of paws and rustle of disturbed leaves. Duskshadow shook himself, letting the shower of bark fall off of his dark pelt.
It was probably just a mouse running away from me, the tom tried to tell himself, not thoroughly convinced at all. With a reluctant sigh, he positioned himself near a tree's sturdy base, and pushed off with his hind legs. The leap sent him flying upward, he latched onto the tree, pulling with skilled forepaws. Only moments later he had already reached the first branch and was seated neatly. His dark tabby pelt blended against the bark almost flawlessly, and his snakelike tail hung down, the tip flickering from side to side as if it had a life of its own. Duskshadow let his yellow gaze shift among the trees, trying to search for roots of the scent he had recognized. With a silent gasp of shock, his jaw dropped, and fur bristled in semi-hostility. The figure of another cat was nearby, sitting in a branch only a foxlength away. Swiftly, doing his best to be silent and agile, which was fairly natural to him, he gained height to level his with the other cat's. Now, he was at the same height with her, confused whether to be hostile of friendly.
"Who are you?" He asked, trying to sound sharp, but his voice turned out as confused. He noticed she seemed very thin, and her calico pelt was hanging on her sides. She wouldn't be able to fight if she held her ground, and he couldn't help but feel pity for her. Perhaps she had entered the territory as a last resort. Guilt struck his mind, as a loyal warrior, he had to drive away rouges, but how could he do that to a starving cat.
