I sat up, the dream etched into my brain like stone. The dream was so vivid that I wasn’t even sure I was awake until I moved my feet over the bed and right onto a splintering piece of wood. I winced and lifted my foot so that I could pull it out, when a knock sounded on my door. I pulled it free and leaped from the bed, my heart dropping to my gut and jumping to my throat when the knob had begun to turn.
“Just a moment!” I nearly cried out too loudly as I reached my desk and began piling on books.
“Oh Audrey you don’t have to worry about hiding your documents, I already know about them.” Kyran sneered as he peeked in the door.
I glowered, moving the book and putting them in my desk drawer and locking it. Kyran had a habit of taking my documents and calling them his own. It wasn’t to avoid the work, or simply because I had better solutions then he, he did it because once he presented them, I would have nothing myself.
“Hand them over, Dear nephew.” Kyran purred, holding his hand out.
I had only said no a hand full of times, and it had never left me in a good condition, mentally or physically.
“Unlock that desk and give them to me.” He said with an irritated growl, as if I were a mere dog with a disobedient streak.
I stood taller, to my entire fourteen year old five foot and eight inches, in comparison failed to his height, by a head.
“Are you here simply to torment your young nephew?” I asked, shaking my head and clicking my tongue.
“Are you alive to cause your parents hardship and strife?” Kyran mimicked.
My eyes narrowed and I took the key from the top of the desk and put it in the lock. “Get it yourself.” I said walking to my window, pushing it open and crawling out.
He furrowed his brows, then the side of his lip pulled up into a snarl of annoyance. He walked to the desk and tried turning the key, the key only broke.
He let out a string of violent threats, the normal ‘Causing my parents trouble for my disobedience and trying to live my life on my own.’ He thought himself such a villain, like he was oh so clever. The truth being he was a fool who enjoyed troubling others.
I was already climbing down the rough ivy covered wall when my window was reopened and my uncle’s face appeared.
He had no chance to talk because my mother appeared from the garden. Weaving around the hedges in pure elegance and grace, despite the long skirts and thick shawls placed on her.
My mother frowned at me as I dropped to the ground, giving her a sheepish smile.
“You know how dangerous that is, Audrey.” She rebuked, picking up the front of her skirts and hurrying over to me, one arm open wide.
She had always been one to baby me, while my father would just as soon push me into a pit of wolverines with a butter knife.
“Mother, I know you worry but if I don’t do something like that every now then, how would I escape someone after my life if the guards had failed.” I had softly replied, deciding it best to show her my mask of sheepishness.
She let out a defeated sigh and dropped her skirts so she could fix my clothing, her eyes lighter each time I saw her out of her room.
“Your eyes are lighter today, mother.” I said, gently taking her hands and putting them to her side. Taking note of the white eye shadow highlighting her lavender eyes.
“Is that so?” She asked, as if she had just learned of it. She was sure I hadn’t known she was losing her sight. “Well, you have meeting with your future wife!” She bubbled, taking my hands again. “I hear she is a very lovely girl!”
Within two hours, I was standing in my best clothing in the sparing yard what my mother called my future-in-law-brothers as they warmed up.
Despite my rolling eyes and gagging right in front of her, she still insisted I meet the girl. It was fine by me, if I scared and annoyed her enough she would just complain to her parents for it to be called off.
“Hey, who is this?” A sweet, yet rough around the edges voice called out.
“This is a guest, his father is here talking with ours about some business. Laurel, what are you wearing?” Dezil sighed.
I had turned around, expecting the girl I assumed to be Laurel in a flouncy kind of cupcake dress that would be ruined in the mud. What a shock I got when I turned around and she was wearing the exact same thing as her brothers, helmet and all, with a sword in hand. I couldn’t help it. I laughed, I laughed so hard my gut was in pain and my face was turning red.
“What are you wearing?” I said between gasp as I wiped a mirthful tear from my eye.
She pulled off her helmet to glower at me, vibrant blue eyes dangerously glaring at me. I was expecting a more of a pout, but this girl looked like she was imagining stabbing me with her sword.
“What does it look like I’m wearing? What are you wearing?” she spat, crossing her arms awkwardly with the sword in hand.
I blinked and glared at her. “It wasn’t my fault my mother thought I should put something on to impress a snotty girl like you.” It was then I noticed she was also caked in mud from her feet to her knees.
“Well, too bad the plan failed. Why don’t you take your stuck up face and attitude and go get some real clothes on! Then stay off our lawn!” She growled.
Just as I was about to reply with some rancor, her brother Dezil spoke up.
“Children, children… why don’t you stop trying to resolve with your words and use some sparing.” Dezil sighed, shaking his head.
My jaw dropped, I wasn’t going to hit a girl over something so petty.
“Then give this prissy boy a sword!” She yelled.
It was on.
