Sweat ran down Alex's flank and shoulders, turning her buckskin coat a dark bay. Huffing, Alex's hooves kicked up the small spiked stones that covered the unkept road of Long Island. Alex turned her head when she heard a deep rumbling growl from behind her. Watching, Alex saw multiple pairs of glowing eyes disappear behind the tree line, still in pursuit. Alex whinnied, pushing herself harder. The leather straps around her girth, forelegs and neck were digging into her skin slightly. Though it was slightly uncomfortable, the pressure reassured her that she was still wearing them. Alex's nostrils flared, sweat dripping off her muzzle. Come on she thought, faster faster. Up ahead Alex saw that the rode was blocked by a large toppled tree. She didn't have enough time to go around, so Alex knew she had to jump it. Approaching the jump, Alex slowed down slightly in preparation, waiting till it was the right time to launch herself over the obstacle. Taking a few more strides, Alex snapped her forelegs under her and arched over the jump. The second her forelegs hit the road on the opposite side of the jump, Alex was off again. Looking over her shoulder, Alex's black mane stuck to her sweat covered neck. Scanning the trees and bushes behind her, Alex didn't see the monsters, but instead heard a faint growling and rustling of leaves. Grinning, she fixed her eyes on the road ahead, and galloped on. Suddenly, Alex tripped, and fell to the road, pain flaring through her hooves, legs and body.
On the ground, Alex's body shook from exhaustion, sweat pooling on the dirt. Shakily, Alex tried to lift herself from the ground, but when she put weight on her back left leg, fell back down, neighing loudly. Panting, Alex cursed, turning her head to look at her hoof, which had a trickle of blood dripping from it. Alex cursed again, wishing for her arms. Closing her eyes, Alex slowed her breathing, come on, transform back, please come on. Upon opening her eyes, Alex shook her head, her normal human, head. Cracking her knuckles, Alex went to get up again, but found her body was still one of a horse, a centaur? like in mythology she thought no a dream, just a bad dream. Bending down, Alex grabbed her back right leg and looked at the hoof, seeing a large jagged stone stuck in the sole. Alex tried to get a grip on the stone, but it was coated in blood, which made it slippery. Trying again, Alex grabbed a hold of the medium sized stone and ripped it out of her hoof with a scream.
Dropping the rock, she let go off her hoof and took a deep breath. Silence, at last she thought, then held her breath, she scrambled to her four legs. Hearing a rustling, Alex's head snapped around, holding her hands in front of her head in a defensive position. Alex realised her mistake to late, and claws dug into her side. Screaming, Alex bucked, kicking up her hind legs, she had fallen for the oldest trick in the book, distracting her then attacking from the other side. With a screech, Alex took off, bucking and pig rooting, until with a screech the monster was thrown from her back. Large hot tears streaked down Alex's face and landed on her torn, dirty tank top, which was spattered with blood.
Alex scrambled up a hill, with her limping gallop. She grabbed hold of the lone pine tree at the top, using it for support. Alex looked behind her to see glowing eyes and dark moving shapes advancing slowly. The flow of tears increased and she let out a small moan, she didn't want to die, especially like this, an injured half girl half horse who had no idea where she was. Alex pushed off the pine tree and immediately stumbled, crying out in pain at her wounds. Alex knew it was hopeless, there was nothing here but a run down farm house further down the hill, and probably nobody for miles around and though she knew it was helpless, Alex screamed "help"
