As you may know at the season finale of season eight the angels fell from heaven due to Castiel being manipulated by the evil angel, Metatron. After the fall Sam went into a deep sleep-like coma due to the side-effects of the closing hell trials. Castiel lost his grace making him unable to help aid in healing Sam leaving Dean desperate. Dean then made a deal with an angel called Ezekiel so that the angel could heal Sam by possessing him. Crowley remains Dean's prisoner as Kevin tries to figure out a way to send the angels back to heaven. Meanwhile, Abaddon, a Knight of Hell strives to take over Crowley's rank as king of hell. The angel inside Sam is not who he says he is for the angel Ezekiel was destroyed in the falling heaven chaos. Dean soon found out of this fact and desperately tried to warn his brother, but he's too late. The angel inside Sam who happens to be Gadreel was working with Metatron the entire time. Metatron instructed Gadreel to kill Kevin and Gadreel does just that when Dean tried to warn Sam of Gadreel's presence. Dean and Sam struggle with brother issues leaving Sam alone dealing with Kevin's death. Both Crowley and Dean meet up with Cain where Dean then acquires the First Blade and the Mark of Cain. All the while, Castiel has been stealing rogue angel's grace to reclaim some of his old powers. Sam and Castiel search for Gadreel who they presume will lead them straight to Metatron. Dean hunts down Abaddon with Crowley and eventually kills her, but the blade has horrible effects on him. The blade begins to twist and shape his personality causing him to not only like killing, but it becomes a sick obsession. As Castiel and Gadreel try to get back into heaven in order to destroy the angel tablet Dean plans to kill Metatron. However, the fight goes bad and Metatron stabs Dean straight in the heart while Sam watches. Dean dies in Sam's arms and Metatron is sent to heaven's dungeons while Castiel reopens heaven's gates. Desperate, Sam calls upon Crowley hoping he can save his brother, but his brother needs more than saving. For Dean is worse than dead, he's become a demon...
