If primary/secondary/tertiary colours are the same. X is a random color, and so is Y, XXY means primary and secondary are the same colour with a different tertiary. XYX is the same pri and tert, and different secondary color. Etc.

Think of it in simple math terms, with a standing for one number, b for another, etc. In this case, however, the letters stand for colors, first one for Primary, second for Secondary, and third for Tertiary. There are various combinations available. If a letter repeats itself, then that means that the same color is available in those two slots.
