username: Master of nightmares
name: Scarad (pronounced Scar
[as in blemish or mark] ad [as in an advertisement])
gender: male
Scarad’s sexuality: heterosexual
Shadow's name: Sulu (pronounced Soo loo)
Shadow's gender: male

Scarad’s Personality:
Even before Scarad's face was cracked, he lived a double life. As he had been made to be a prince, Scarad lived a life of posh and royalty. But royal life has always been too famous for his taste. He couldn't go to another room without it being all over the newspaper, but, despite the fact that he hated life as a prince, Scarad put on a show. With a smile painted on his face, he would face the crowds who fawned over him daily. He would host feasts and parties occasionally and flirt with a few commoner girls. He always seemed to have a calm and laid back attitude and could handle every situation easily. But he would often lock himself in his room, put on his dirtiest commoner clothes, and he and his shadow would sneak through the window. Scarad had some commoner friends, and even a girlfriend. They didn't know he was royalty and never treated him that way. They would insult and tease him, prank on him and make rude jokes around them. But instead of ordering their execution, he returned the favor and would be just as uncivilized as them. But eventually got in a horrible accident while sneaking out of his palace. He found his whole life shattering around him. Scarad boarded up his windows and locked his door, refusing to go out of his room, refusing to let anyone see him. He became depressed and skittish, jumping to any sound. After a while, his presence was finally demanded. He had a mask made and hid behind it. His whole personality was changed. He became cold and distant, not even looking at the girls that demanded his attention. He never hosted festivals anymore and the only smile he ever wore was on his mask, which didn't seem cheery to anyone anymore. Scarad tensed every time someone touched him, hoping they would avoid ever touching him again, none the less take off his mask

Sulu’s personality:
Unlike Scarad, Sulu’s personality always stays the same. He is notoriously grumpy and bad natured and he is easily angered. Sulu has a habit of ignoring others when he finds them dull or boring. He gets annoyed very quickly and will sometimes attack when he is annoyed too much. Despite the fact that Sulu doesn’t really talk, he has an uncanny ability to make sarcastic remarks by just looking at someone. He, however, can be happy (or act happy, no one really knows what that shadow is thinking) when he is in Scarad’s company.

Story:
The sounds of footsteps against the marble floors echoed throughout the empty hallways. They stretched out before Scarad, long and almost never ending, twisting and turning into new hallways and staircases. This was a labyrinth within the palace, an untrained servant or thief can easily lose his way in here. The plain hallways, making it easy for one to go in never ending circles, passing the same door again and again, all the while murmuring, "the exit must be around here soon." Fortunately Scarad grew up in these very halls, often playing hide and seek in them as a child, much to his servant's annoyance. He had memorized these halls like the back of his hand, and so had Sulu. Scarad glanced down at Sulu with a wry smile, watching as he trotted happily besides Scarad. Sulu came from a women's engagement ring. It was tragic really, the way he came about. A women's husband died when her daughter was a child, and consumed with grief, she gave her wedding ring to her only daughter and drove off. She had been hit and killed within an hour, and so much grief was poured into that one ring that out popped Sulu, the grumpy cat with the happy face. Sulu glanced up at Scarad for a moment and butted his leg with his head. Finally Scarad came to the door of his room, he paused for a second and glanced down the hallways, no one was there. The door opened with and unhappy creak, but nothing too noticeable, Scarad slipped inside, leaving a small opening for Sulu to slip through before shutting the door and locking it. Scarad waited for a few more seconds, just to make sure no one was passing by, the hallways were silent. With a small smile of triumph, Scarad took off his clothes and put on his dirtiest and baggiest commoner's clothing. He smeared a bit of dirt from a potted plant onto his hands and face and ruffled his fingers through his hair, making it even messier than usual. He pivoted sharply and turned to Sulu with his arms spread wide. "So, how do I look?" He asked and flashed a charming smile. Even though his expression never changed, Scarad could easily understand what Sulu was trying to say. "You look like a filthy hobo." Was what Sulu's look probably meant. "You're just saying that." Scarad rubbed Sulu's head. "I look like a hot prince no matter what I wear." Scarad ignored Sulu's sarcastic look and started throwing all his blankets together in a pile. He started tying the ends together quickly and fluidly, he tugged on each knot to make sure it would hold. Within minutes all his blankets had been thrown together to make a very gaudy rope. He tied one end onto his bed post and threw the other end out the window. Scarad stepped to the windowsill, but a tug on his pants stopped him in his tracks. He looked down at Sulu, who had Scarad's pants in his jaws. "What?" Scarad asked, Sulu was always eager to go with him. "What's wrong?" Sulu didn't answer, instead he just kept tugging on Scarad's pants. "Hey, is something wrong?" Scarad asked, "Sulu, stop tugging on my pants and answer me." Sulu gestured to the bed leg aggressively, even abandoning Scarad's pants to tug on the makeshift rope. "I don't know what you're talking about." Scarad replied, extremely annoyed. "This has always worked before, what could go wrong with it this time?" Scarad got up and walked towards the window sill. He stepped onto it with his back facing the drop just inches away. "Are you sure you don't want to go?" Sulu only replied by sinking his teeth in the rope and standing his ground. What was this shadow doing? Scarad grabbed the rope and gave Sulu a mock salute, "Well then ma'a as-salaama my good friend." Scarad said and jumped out the window.

There is an odd feeling that comes with falling. The world rushing around Scarad and the silk blanket rope slipping through his fingers. He loved that feeling, the thrill that came with falling, even if it only lasted two seconds. His fingers gripped the rope and he swung his legs out, stopping his fall with one bone jarring slam. He looked up at the window sill, hoping to see Sulu's happy face looking down at him. Sulu was not there. Scarad let out an angry sigh and pushed himself off the wall again. The world swirled around him, falling was always an experience he had enjoyed. Scarad caught himself again in mid fall, but this time was much different from the last. Just as he came to his stop there was an awful cracking and splintering sound. Suddenly many things were happening at once. The rope fell from Scarad's hands, Scarad began to fall, the end of the rope (Still attached to a now broken table leg) flung out of the window, and Sulu Let out a cry of pain as he almost fell out of the window, still clinging to the rope. Scarad had just enough time to see Sulu let go of the rope and scramble through the window before the piece of his bed leg hit him between the eyes and everything went black.

Scarad woke up face down in the dirt. He laid there for a moment, not feeling much pain, but not trusting that he was still fully awake. He was afraid that one of his limbs had broken off during the fall. Logic and the sharp pain on his forehead said otherwise though. He felt something tugging at his hair and groaned, waving his arm like he was trying to turn off an alarm clock. The tugging only increased until it started to hurt. Scarad cracked open his eyes and turned to his side. "Sulu?" He groaned as he saw the cat shaped shadow. "Wha' happened? Why did I fall?" He couldn't remember half of what happened right before he blacked out. He watched as Sulu dragged a piece of wood over to him. It took Scarad a while before he realized it was his bed leg. "Huh, would you look at that?" He asked, "It broke off. Is that what you were trying to tell me?" Sulu nodded, he must've seen a crack in it before Scarad climbed down. "Welp, no harm done, right?" He asked rhetorically, but the look Sulu had on his face was unsettling. "Right?!? Sulu please tell me I'm right?" A cold trickle of fear went through him, answered by a sharp pain on his forehead. "It's my face isn't it? It is. Oh gosh, it is. Oh no, oh gosh no." His hand reached up to his head, his fingers tingling slightly with fear. He touched his hand to his face, feeling the crack extending from his eyebrow, over the bridge of his nose and ending at his jaw. "No no no no no." Scarad felt a horrible sick feeling sweep over him followed by jittery nervous energy. He couldn't imagine what the public would do if they saw him like this. He would never be able to keep up his double life, and what excuse was he going to make up to explain the crack. Scarad turned around and slung the rope around his shoulder. "Come on Sulu, let's get out of here."

The next few minutes were spent with Scarad scrambling up the wall to his bedroom window with Sulu annoyingly perched on his shoulder. By the time he hauled himself over the windowsill he was exhausted and his fingers were scraped and damaged. Scarad sat on the ground, resting his back against the wall, panting and trying to think his way out of this mess. And then his breath caught, his door was open, it wasn't open too far, but it was open wide enough. He got up, ignoring any exhaustion, jumped over his broken bed, and slammed the door. He locked it, but a nagging voice in the back of his head told him that it wasn't enough. He took a table and a few chairs, and he stacked the in front of the door. The nagging voice spoke again. "The window." It seemed to say "They will see you through the window." Scarad cursed and took a bookshelf, he pressed his back against it, straining and pushing against it, after a few long seconds, Scarad gave up and knocked out a few dozen books. He dragged the now empty bookshelf in front of his window, blocking out all sunlight. Scarad stumbled backwards, as if struck blind. His back pressed against the wall and he slid down into a sitting position. The fear suddenly settled in, burrowing itself deep in him. Suddenly Scarad couldn't stop trembling.

Relationship with Sulu:
Scarad and Sulu, like all doll and shadow pairs, are completely inseparable. But their friendship is a little more... rough around the edges. They treat each other more like brothers than anything, and they get on each others way more than getting along. Despite the fact that they always hang out with they will often annoy and bug each other relentlessly. Every now and then, you may be able to find Sulu trying to strangle Scarad with his capelet. Usually they stop trying to kill each other before things get too violent.

History:
Scarad's history actually begins before he was made, it begins when a baby girl was born. Her mom and dad were exceedingly wealthy. Every year, around summer, the small family would go on a vacation to a foreign country, and every year, at Christmas, the little girl's parents would give her a porcelain doll from that country. Each doll was magnificent, with flowing dresses and silky hair, all royalty from those countries which they visited. But there always is a problem which ever young, doll obsessed, princess-to-be girl runs into once during their play time. There is no prince. How can a princess find her true love if their are no princes to fall in love with. So, that summer, when the girl's family went on their yearly vacation to Suadi Arabia, The little girl found the perfect prince. The girl, being rich and spoiled as she was, begged for that one doll, the prince. Her mother, though appalled by the idea of a little girl wanting a male doll, decided to secretly buy the prince doll for her. That Christmas was more wonderful than all the others, because that Christmas, the little girl had found out the magical wonders of "shipping." But the joy didn't last long. Before the next vacation came, the little girl's dad died. It was a horrific event, their house and all their savings burned to the ground, with her dad inside. The girl's mom sold whatever jewelry she could salvage so that she could rent one little apartment. But depression soon got the best of the little girl's mom. She gave her engagement ring to her daughter one day and drove off, she never came back. The girl later got the news that her mom was killed in in accident and she was loaded up and sent to foster care. But she forgot to pack two items, one grief contained engagement ring, and one Arabian prince. The ring turned into Sulu, Sulu made a contract with the doll prince, and the prince became Scarad.
Scarad, alone and homeless came with his shadow to the dollhouse. But, he still seems to emit an air of "princeliness," even though he isn't a prince anymore. And, much to Scarad's annoyance, many people see him as a prince and treat him as royalty nowadays. But Scarad hated being put on that pedestal of perfection. When he cracked his face, Scarad felt like he was betraying his people, they saw him as perfect and always wanted to be him, while in reality he was broken and easily worried. No one is perfect, And Scarad was not an exception. He eventually made a mask a resumed his double life. His commoner friends, however, didn't care about his cracked face. Injuring yourself was a daily occurence for him and they accepted him for who he was.

I lived on with it. In fact, we weren’t far off from enemies nor were we friends. Sometimes we worked hand and hand, and sometimes, it became a monster of regret, simply building up and tormenting my existence. I lived with the the forgotten guile of which every man holds, all the peverse and secret desires a man could ever want. It was the guilty conscience that resides within each soul. With all the money in the world cannot quench my insatiable greed. My only reason is to take everything, including their smiles.

He gave me life, he gave me purpose, he gave me a character to cling onto. The mask that held everything together, my selfish lust for all the treasures of the world, it was a very curse itself, taunting me with its emotionless smile. What I thought of was only means of hiding from faces not to be seen, I was only hiding from myself, from the world. Yet my actions only repeat in a fall of history, taking everything precious from them. The joy of taking away their world is only a guilty pleasure. All these things I desire for makes me nothing but a guilty king.

OKEN RIME

It isn't his job nor is he desperate for money, but he is a thief. He pickpockets unfortunate people off the streets. Nicodemus has no reason, nor does he need one, he simply takes their gold. For some reason, he has a very addiction to gold itself, not its worth or price, but its essense. He has plenty of money to live on, yet he still steals more than needed. Nicodemus may me rich, but be is not a king either.

ECEIVING xASK
Nicodemus's mask holds a very simple design used for hiding his face when he's at his job. Though it isn't the only thing it does. He is rather hiding from the world, his loneliness, his crimes, all the sins he has commited. He thinks that by wearing it, he will forget what he has done and thus takes on a very much different colder personality when he has it on. He acts rather manipulative, sly, and uncaring of others. The mask represents his lusts and hidden desires he wants. When he takes it off, he reverts to a shy and cowardly verson of himself, lamenting and regretting his actions of ever taking away someone's precious belongings and feeling guilty. Nicodemus does not know why he has done his crimes nor does he know why he wears his mask, he simply does.

HE BYSS
It was simple really. There were such laws that governed the world, pulling its strings in the darkness. And then there was one that I would listen to, “Hunt or be hunted.” It had described my world perfectly. There is no such thing as sympathy; we use each other only to benefit ourselves ultimately in the end. And the humans, they were such exquisite and interesting yet very foolish vain creatures. Each of them holds a heart inside of themselves. It was alive and fragile, but a heart was possibly the darkest abyss and a flaw of a human being. It was the chaos that rampaged inside that small heart and turmoil of emotions and feelings not needed. I am simply a shadow, and for that, I possess none of the “useless” flaws of a human. I simply exist to steal the joy of others; as if watching the dying light in a prey’s eyes, its hope fading as a predator devours it. And I? I will be the predator.

ULLING HE TRINGS

I let the mask slide over my face, leaving the last
of my regrets behind as a colder personality came
in. My fingers curled into a strong fist, an emotionless
smile, one that only told many tragedies behind it.
I would not break again, this mask my shadow had
given me, and my shadow had given me life. It was
as if a servant must not doubt a master and I must
do the same, without a second thought. By putting
on the mask, it was only a unifying symbol as one
with my shadow.

Ducking behind a dark alley, I watched as countless
civilians passed by, joyful expressions spreading across
their faces. It was almost like a disease epidemic,
this bright emotion I didn’t understand. But sooner
or later, it would be replaced by darker feelings, for
I would take away their joy. I hadn’t done it because
I needed it, I rather was intrigued by it; humans were
such interesting creatures. There was a flicker of
light as a twisted the dagger into my hands, gripping
it tightly. I eyed at a brown bag hanging loosely off
of someone’s sash, not greedily, but rather intently,
curiously. Slipping into the crowd, and keeping my
head low, I followed the oblivious stranger. I held
out my dagger slowly, lifting it up towards the bag.
Now here was the trick, slice the bottom at first,
yes the bottom, not the top. The coins will slowly
drop into your hands, like rain, from the tiny
slit created. The weight of the bag will only decrease
slowly, rendering the victim oblivious to what was
happening. As the last of the treasures dropped into
my hands, I melted back into the shadows of the alleys.
This was only my first strike against humanity. There
will be plenty more to come; for all the desires in the
world cannot suppress my thirst for such a thing as
what these foolish humans call emotions!
