Ren is afraid of the dark. Seeing how he is part bat, this is very odd. But, it isn't the thought of darkness that scares him, it's the thought of what is lurking in the dark that scares him. When he was little the older batlings use to tell scary stories about the things that lurked in the dark, and ever sicne then, Ren could not stand the dark. He must carry around a flashlight when he lurks in the night in order to not freak out, and he often avoids going anywhere without light. Which, is tedious, but he would rather avoid the dark.
