Raquel's eyes widened and her posture froze when the ship turned the slightest...now heading directly for the island she was on. She bit her tongue to keep from releasing a shout of frustration and began to crawl backwards again, hoping to any God out there that she wouldn't be discovered; and that's when she spotted the human boy on the side of the ship, watching the islands. Oh, God; she had no hope now.
She collapsed on the sand when she reached the dark shade of a clump of palm trees, using her unique ability to wrap the shadows around her, hiding her, hopefully, from full view. The only thing that would give her away would be her fiery hair, glistening and soaking wet.
What on earth would she do if she were caught? Go with her 'shipwrecked' excuse? Well that wouldn't work; there was no sign of a sunken ship anywhere close to her. Maybe that she was thrown overboard from a passing ship? That wouldn't work, either...no ship ever came by here, not one until this. She ran her hands through her hair, resting her forehead on her bent knees. What was she going to do?
A large island lizard slither-crawled up to her feet from a nearby rock, sensing her waves of distressed and clearly effected by them. The medium-small creature moved onto her foot, tilting his head repeatedly, looking at her from every angle. Raquel managed a half-smile at how ridiculous it looked, then held out a hand, palm facing up for him to crawl on. He accepted the offer, and Raquel lifted him closer to her face, glancing at the ever-approaching ship before looking back at the lizard.
What should I do? she thought to him, her brow creasing slightly in returning stress. The lizard paused, surprised that she had spoken to him, then thought the question over, sensing not to ask too many questions. He then leapt off of her hand and onto the shady sand beside her, glancing back at her before darting off into the thick undergrowth.
Leave it to me, she heard the lizard think, and then it was gone, disappearing from sight.
