You don't really have to. You could just say in this world its normal that they are.
But then again, the games do say that Pokémon and people were once one and the same.

I already set up a history and a block of text of how they are living in an advanced society that can be compared to humans and really, I don't want to throw away my two weeks worth of effort

Maybe you could say that there was some pokemon and Human DNA splicing testing before the humans disappeared. The resulting creatures were only able to breed with pokemon because it was the more dominate trait if a Gijinkas breed with a pokemon the result would be Gijinkas children. Then when the humans disappeared these Gijinkas being a bit more evolved than your average pokemon slowly took over the planet because of the genetic works. A pokemon can produce Gijinkas but Gijinkas can't produce normal pokemon only Gijinkas.

I've seen two of my close friends die right in front of me, I was tried to commit suicide 3 times, I have pulled a weapon on my parents, I have tried killing someone, I have nearly killed three people all at once! I have a stupid mental problem, I'm greedy, I have nearly no friends anymore, Either that or they are always busy! WHAT DO I DO?!

I wasn't saying that I wanted to make a new character a teacher, I was just wondering if we could if we did want to.
