If Ling had appeared much more earlier in the manga, he might have appeared in the first anime and add more things to him like his past and what happened to his clan, etc. Love how anime characters always look the same as a child xD

Apparently, Ling has some cameos in 2003, but IDK how reliable TV Tropes is. If that's true, then Ling is a Porygon.
