She also is getting red spots on the tips of her fins. She's obviously a plakat (which cost 13.99$ at my local pet store, while she was only 1.99$ as a baby).

I don't think there is a way to know if a female betta is plakat or not. veil-tails, halfmoons, deltatails, and plakat females look identical, so there is no way without breeding her that you can tell(breeding is hard so I don't recommend trying).

and if she was a baby when you got her, the stripes were her "baby stripes" that all bettas have when young to help break up their body shape(and to show males that they are not ready to breed).

she should loose her horizontal baby stripes and soon after get her vertical bars(known as breeding bars) that say she is mature.

on another note, I have bumped the amount of food I am feeding my bichir up from half a cube of frozen shrimp every two days(you give a day in between to allow digestion) to a full cube every other day. he also got a feeder goldfish a few days ago. the Oscar got 45 goldfish that were 3-4 inches long(took him half and hour to engulf all of them), and my little bichir got a one incher to hunt and kill.

Oh lucky you! I love axolotis, their so beautiful!

What type of fish are they? How big are they? How do you care for them? They look like a fun pet...my pink fish died yesterday. The axolotl is a lighter color than the fish. Personally, I think axolotl look a bit creepy, though.

poor thing probably won't last long at the store.

We actually have an eyeless lionhead. No idea how she lost her eyes, since they weren't taken out by another fish, and there's nothing she could have hurt herself on, since the tank was designed to house an oranda and a bubble eye safely. She does super well with us, though. Her sense of smell is good enough that she'll swim up when it's feeding time and waits for us to hand-feed her. The other goldfish don't bother her one bit, and Gabe, my koi, keeps the danios away from her when she's eating.
Reality is subjective.

They are a type of salamander that stays in their larvae form I guess in a way. They have legs but still breathe under water. Mine right now is only about 5 inches, but they grow up to a foot. I feed mine frozen blood worms and sometimes shrimp pellets. He's currently in a 15 gallon tank until he grows. Axolotls like the cooler temp waters 60-64 Fahrenheit. They also like places to hide. They also come in a variety of colors, I currently have the "wild-type". If you have any other questions feel free to PM me, they're a very awesome pet.

EDIT: They can not be put with aquarium gravel because they will eat it and it's very unsafe. If any one is thinking of getting an axolotl I recommend aquarium sand.

Actually you can tell by their fins
Maybe not till she's full grown though

Thanks for posting this! Her fins look slightly like a delta, but the pet store didn't sell deltas.

I had researched this before but everything I found said that you could not tell them apart(unless they were crowntail of course), but this is neat. learn something new every day.

I found a betta myth and reality thingy and was slightly disturbed by one thing...

it said that bettas, even in the wild, do not live with each other for more than brief periods. If you go to the IBC(international betta congress) wild betta section it talks about wild betta splendens, and says that bettas are quite social, even to the point of schooling. other research backs this 100%

domestic bettas are not this peaceful because of how they are bred. a wild betta an a domestic betta are so far apart you would not know that they were the same species. bettas were domesticated for the males fighting abilities, which meant only the strongest and most aggressive were bred, then Americans and Europeans found the fish and started breeding for color and finage.

another fun fact: "dragon scale" plakat bettas are far more peaceful than the other bettas because they were crossed with wild betta imbellis, betta malachai, and wild betta splendens, creating a much more calm and laid back fish.

(self rant over, please no mass destruction arguing over this fact, if you look it up at the right places, not places about pet bettas, but places about wild bettas, you will see that I am not crazy)
