Choices:
1. Who's the "he"
2. Who's the "he"
3. Who's the "he"
4. Tell me everything
5. Tell me everything
6. Batstream?
7. Tell me everything
Roll says... 1: Who's the "he"?
"And who's this 'he'?" you say. You're bristling, but you're trying to keep your voice down.
Eveningstar stands up and moves past you to look outside. "We can't talk here," she whispers. "It's not safe. Let's leave camp."
"Can I trust you to talk this time?" you ask, glaring her down.
"The way things are now, yes." The tall molly gestures for you to follow her, and quickly you head for the entrance. There's no sentries tonight, and Batstream has evidently gone to bed, so you leave unnoticed.
You wait politely until you're a good distance away from the camp and by the riverside before you halt her and sit down. "Now tell me who's behind this."
Eveningstar sighs, and settles down as well. "Beefur. He's the ringleader."
Your eyes widen, and then narrow again. "And why is that?"
Eveningstar looks into the water, gazing at her reflection. It suddenly occurs to you how tired she looks. "When he was an apprentice, he was always well known for being a micro-manager and perfectionist. No one ever took him very seriously, even when he was ranting about the failures in the Clan system. Around the same time Silverstar picked his son to be deputy, Beefur became a warrior, and stopped complaining. But, one night, our old deputy - do you remember her? - she left us for reasons unexplained. None of us could figure out why, but we just wrote it off as nerves.
"When Birchstar was looking for the next deputy, he was looking for someone who could handle the stress and his own irresponsibility. So he picked me. I didn't want to be deputy, but I accepted." She looks up at you now, tucking her feet under her as tightly as she can. "At the time, I was so preoccupied with my own problems, I didn't want that mantle. I was...seeing someone in ForestClan."
You lean forward a little. "Like Jayface was seeing a loner. That's how Beefur got you, right?"
"At first, yes." Eveningstar is a little more quiet. "Divercloud received a sign that someone was going to throw the Clan out of balance a moon or so after my appointment as deputy. I knew that Birchstar would either ignore it or go into a panic, and then we might lose our leader. So I told Divercloud to keep it to himself until we had more of an idea of who was the traitor."
"I overheard you, actually," you say. "I was next to the medicine den and I heard you tell him to be quiet about it. On accident, I mean."
The leader smiles sadly. "It seems you were destined to get involved in this."
You don't say anything to that, just curl your tail around your toes. "So how did you catch on that Beefur was guilty?"
"At first, I didn't think it was Beefur," she says. "I thought that it was Jayface and Thriftwhisker, because I smelled Jayface around where the first apprentice was found. I guessed that the body was supposed to be discovered, and when Thriftwhisker started acting jumpy around me, I was certain that they were up to something. So I went out a few nights, and discovered that they had caught another apprentice."
"Rabbitpaw."
"Yes, her...but it was Beefur this time. I confronted him and demanded to know what he was doing, but..." At this point, Eveningstar halts, and stares at the ground, breathing unsteadily. She looks like she's about to be sick.
And what next?
Are you alright?
Wait until it passes.
Well, what happened?!
