"So did my mom drown too, or...?" Your voice is awfully ragged. You clear your throat and repeat the question.

"That's what it looks like, yes." Knotpaw gazes at a stone on the floor. "We'd have to ask Divercloud for any more specifics, but what's going around is that she drowned."

"What's going around isn't always true." You sit up, unaware of the moss clinging to your coat.

"I know." Knotpaw sighs. "In any case, she was found in the water, so that's the most likely story. And..." She shifts nervously. "I'm sorry, but Jayface ran off on me. She bolted as soon as you left, and I couldn't catch up to her. She hasn't come back yet."

You don't say anything.

When it's dark, Knotpaw helps you get all of the debris off of your fur before leading you out to the center of camp, where cats have already gathered to bid farewells. You patiently wait on the outside of the circle until there's room for you to go in. Your paws feel like stones.

You don't say much, just press your nose to your mother's cheek. You feel a little angry that they closed her jaw and eyes to make it look like she's sleeping. She's not sleeping. Why would they do that?

You only linger for a moment before stepping out of the circle and heading back for the den. You don't feel hungry.

None of the apprentices go in just yet - they're kind enough to give you space for now. You know that you'll have to go back to training either tomorrow or the next day, but right now you just kind of savor the quiet stillness of being alone in a den at night. You fall asleep early, despite your grief.

It's for this reason that you wake up before the sun is out. You look around to see every other apprentice asleep in their nest. The outside is utterly silent.

You feel like you should try to sleep, but some little spark in your brain refuses to rest. You need to figure out what to do.
