Sidenote: If I manage to snag a slot, the foal will definitely be called Jack cx *ahem*Story:As far as the eye could see, the infamous Saguaro Desert spread out on a seemingly endless plateau. Eventually, in the distance, the land reared upwards; forming an equally hostile range of rocky outcrops and peaks. It was barely a place for a man, let alone an Equid. For such a vast expanse of land it was eerily still, only interrupted once or twice by a lone tumbleweed caught in the breeze or the silhouette of a vulture piercing the pristine blue sky. Silence had fallen, once again and only the four beat of hooves moving over pebbly sand could be heard. Overhead, the Sun was just beginning to turn in the sky, starting it's daily race to the safety of it's bed, tucked deep behind the mountains. It wouldn't be long now till night fell, blanketing the landscape in an unsettling façade of moonlight and shadows. Grimly, the hooves drew to a halt as the bay mare surveyed her surroundings.
With a sigh, Eloin took in her predicament with a pair of pragmatic brown eyes. After three days of travelling through this hell-hole, she still found herself no closer to the exit. Limited food and virtually no water had left the mare a little battered and bruised; but still a fiery determination burned inside. It was her versus the Saguaro and she wasn't about to lose.
Cacti rose up all around her, standing to attention like stick-thin soldiers. Their shadows grew longer by the second, distorting as they fell onto the surrounding rocks and wiry scrubland. As the mare slowly made her way to a large boulder - her chosen shelter for the night - she frowned a little. Her scenery had changed since last night, evolving from sand flats to dense shrubs - that must be a good thing, right? The said shrubs were scratchy and unwelcoming, however they offered camouflage. Eloin sank to the ground, laying on her side in the shadow of a large boulder. Strategically, the bay pulled her tail up, tucking it close to her. She had quickly learned the hard way; the nights got very cold here and the nocturnal noises didn't bare thinking about. Screeches, howls and cries that would shake even the steeliest of hearts.
Just as Eloin felt herself drifting into the first wave of an uneasy sleep, her ears flickered forward; eyes snapping open. Hoofbeats? A familiar rhythmic four-step to be precise. But, was it simply another mirage, or, this time, could it be the real thing? Was that even possible, out here in the desert? She would soon find out regardless...the hooves were coming closer.
For some reason, Eloin found herself pinning her ears back, flattening her head low to the ground. The mare held her breath in nervous anticipation as the hooves drew to a slow halt. Then, a face appeared on the other side of the shrubs. The black of his coat now blended with the Saguaro, allowing the white markings of his coat to gleam eerily in the light of the full moon. For a split second, Eloin even contemplated the fact that it
was a living skeleton looming over her.
A drawn-out silence seemed to pass between the two, before the stallion finally spoke up, his tone gravely and monotone, "
What do you think you're doing out here, miss." Eloin searched for an answer, though nothing seemed to present itself. Instead she clambered swiftly to her feet, bringing herself to almost eye level with the mysterious stallion, "
I got lost." she stated pointedly, her tone indicating that she wasn't going to divulge further. The stallion grunted, accepting the answer with no further questions. Perhaps it wasn't the first time an Equid had got lost here?
The stallion seemed to be debating something, regarding her with unreadable blue eyes. With a flick of his tail, he turned, beginning to walk away. Eloin's mouth dropped open slightly - did he seriously think he was leaving her here?!
"
I'll take you back to your nice comfortable grasslands tomorrow miss. For now, let's just get somewhere safe for the night." After Eloin stayed glued to her spot, the stallion inclined his head slightly, his tail flicking in irritation, "
Hurry up before I change my mind" Hurriedly, Eloin obeyed. It seems if she wanted out of this desert, she would have to trust this stranger. As the stallion strode away in front of her, he didn't seem inclined to make small talk. Eloin was too busy trying to navigate the rough terrain in the pitch black to start her own conversation.
As they reached an area of level ground the shrubs simply seemed to wither away, leaving hard stone beneath their hooves. Large rocky outcrops shadowed the pair on either side, and the stallion drew to an abrupt halt. Eloin only just managed to not walk straight into him. Finally, a moment where she could ask him a question. It had been pressing on her for a little while now, "
So, what's your name, desert stranger?" The mare teased a little.
"
Shut your mouth." The stallions tone was so abrupt, Eloin frowned in annoyance. She was just about to snap in response when the stranger whipped his tail up; smothering it against her mouth, "
I said, be quiet." This time, Eloin obeyed; though she didn't have much of a choice in the matter. The stallion stood stock still, blue eyes narrowed; scanning the shadows and rocks. Finally his eyes came to rest on one particular rock...that began to creep closer. The mountain lion sprang forward, a bone-chilling yowl erupting from it's throat like a war cry.
Eloin reared backwards as the stranger sprang forwards, meeting the cougar in an embrace of hooves and claws. The stallion lashed his tail, rearing repeatedly. The cougar slashed at his stomach, managing to just graze the stranger's chest. This seemed to fuel the fire that was already burning bright in his eyes; enraging it into an inferno. Hooves rained down upon the creature, one in particular managing to land a hefty strike to the creature's ribcage. With a growl of fury, the cougar turned tail, retreating back into the rocks. Pinning his ears back, the stallion twisted his head to Eloin; his voice almost a snarl, "
We have to go now. It'll be back soon - and where there is one there's always more." With that the stallion took off at a full gallop. Eloin set off after him, the wind whipping her mane.
They were galloping for a while before the stallion deemed it safe to stop. Eloin fought to catch her breath, but the stallion only grunted. His chest was scraped and bloody, but it was nothing serious. "
Dang cougars." he spat, his foot stamping the ground in annoyance, "
See what a bright idea it is to try and travel the Saguaro alone, miss" his tone was short and a little sarcastic. Eloin could have argued, but by the look in his eyes, it was probably better to let him cool down.
The stranger gestured to the twisted tree where they'd come to rest. It was old and dead, god knows when it had last been living, "
Rest there. I'll keep watch." With that, the stallion turned his back to her. It was an order, not open for discussion. Not that Eloin would have contested it anyone. She had barely slept in three days, and after tonight's misadventure she could do with a rest. Settling down, Eloin allowed the tendrils of sleep to overcome her, drifting off into a relatively peaceful slumber.

"
Wake up."
An unamused voice wrenched the mare back into the land of the conscious. Slowly she blinked her eyes open, brown orbs protesting as the Sun flooded her vision. Already the warm beams of light tickled her body, suggesting a warm day ahead. She blinked. Right in front of her eyes a pair of hardened hooves came slowly into focus. Eloin followed them up, onto the face of the mysterious stranger; his blue eyes staring down at her with the same unreadable expression as always.
"
What time is it?" the mare asked groggily as she stood up, shaking the sand from her coat. The stallion twisted his head slightly, eying the Sun as it peaked over the horizon, "
Just gone dawn." he responded curtly, not hesitating to add, with a grunt of irritation, "
You overslept."
Eloin felt herself rolling her eyes at the stallion's remark. If he noticed, the stranger chose not to comment on it.
They set off early, upon the stranger's insistence and the day passed quickly and uneventfully. What conversation was passed between the two was merely comments; some about the weather, others about the wildlife and nearly all made by Eloin. Pretty soon they were climbing a steep hillside, the burning Sun at their backs. Once they reached the peak, Eloin let out a gasp of relief and even the stranger allowed himself the shadow of a smile. Just on the other side of the slope the terrain lowered out as a river cut through the mountains. A large valley wound it's way into the distance, flourishing with grasslands and all sorts of assorted flora.
Eloin turned to the stranger, giving him a large smile, "
Thankyou for helping me." The stallion stared at her, merely tipping his head in acknowledgement. Eloin began to make her way down the slope, but stopped suddenly, turning, "
You never answered my question earlier and I'd like to know. What is your name?" The stallion stayed silent for a moment before answering, "
The name's Marston". Eloin could have almost sworn she saw a smile flicker over the stallion features as he turned, making his way back into the Saguaro desert. And just like that Marston was gone. Eloin turned, a brief frown flashing over her features before it returned to a large grin. She took off down the hill as fast as she could, back towards her home. Friends, food and safety awaited, a different world to the hostile Saguaro.
When she reached her home and told her heard of her story, they didn't believe her at first. But some had heard. They had heard of an Equid who lived in the Saguaro. Few had ever seen him, though each tale grew more fanciful than the next. Most said he was a real - others insisted he was simply a mirage. Some even said he was a ghost who appeared to Equids in their time of need. Whatever he was, Eloin was grateful; without his help she had no doubt the Saguaro would have won.
