3. I wanted to ask...
4. I wanted to ask...
5. I know you're up to something
6. I wanted to ask...
7. I wanted to ask...
8. I wanted to ask...
Roll says... 7: I wanted to ask...
"I was just reminded, Divercloud..." you begin, keeping as casual of a tone as you can. "I wanted to ask you something."
"Go ahead, little one," he replies, continuing his sorting (wow, rude. Didn't he make you pause eating so you could hear him ramble?).
"What's your part in all of this?"
"In what, dear?"
"You know what." Your voice becomes serious. "Everything. You, Eveningstar. What are you up to?"
He stops, stiffening. You watch him nearly freeze up for a long, long minute, before he finally turns around to look at you. It's surprising that his fur is capable of looking like all of the color drained out of it.
His mouth moves a few times, like he's trying to figure out what to say. "I...I don't know wh-"
"Yes you do." You narrow your eyes. "Twice now, I've heard you talking to Eveningstar. You two are involved with this whole thing, aren't you? The apprentices, Birchstar-"
He hurriedly hushes you, which is the quickest reaction you've ever gotten out of him. He pokes his head out of the medicine den, looks around carefully, and then returns to you, whispering, "You shouldn't know about this."
"So I gathered," you reply dryly. "Given that two cats are dead from this."
"We didn't-"
"And, for that matter, one of your lackeys tried to take me out." For his sake, you're keeping your voice quiet, but it reverberates in the den with anger even so.
He crouches next to you. "Rookpaw...I have nothing to do with this."
You blink, slowly.
"My only part is being Eveningstar's confidant. I can't get involved, for the sake of the Clan. But you must understand that Eveningstar is as much of a victim of this as those poor apprentices."
"Reaaally."
He looks around again, and leans him a little, enough that you can catch the stink of his breath. "Someone else is pulling the strings. They're trying to control the leader. It's why Birchstar is dead. Why those apprentices...why you were attacked. Eveningstar only wants to keep you safe."
You lean in a little, ignoring the smell. "Who is it?"
"I don't know." He sighs. "She refused to tell me who's involved. I wish she would, so I..."
He glances at the back of the den. You have to move your head past him to see, but in the very back, you think you can spot a few familiar bright red berries.
"Divercloud..." you start, surprised.
"If you're going to insist on finding out the truth..." He lowers his head, sighing again, and then looking up at you mournfully. "I wish that this was on someone else's shoulders, Rookpaw. I'm so sorry. You're too young for this."
I'm a BrookClan cat. It's my duty.
As if anyone else was nosy enough.
I'll uncover this, Divercloud.
I might be next on the target list.
Don't worry for me.
Say nothing.
