meet aquillo (ah-kee-loh), a male mako who has developed a habit of
travelling and made some new discoveries along the way.
at the time of his birth aquillo's parents were in the midst of travelling, for he was born earlier than they had been anticipating.
brought into the cold waters off the coast of iceland his parents feared that he would not survive the low temperatures in his
premature state. despite their worries he thrived and rather seemed to enjoy the climate, even growing some extra chin fluff to
keep him warm. thus aquillo was named after the purple-winged deity of the north wind. after returning home to the family's
usual resting region in the mediterranean, aki (as he prefers to be called) found himself rather restless and uncomfortable in the
warm waters after a period of time. to settle himself, he decided to take a trip back to iceland and found that a vacation in the
cold waters helped relax him. since then he has made it a regular habit.
the older he grew, the more time he chose to spend there, until eventually he left his home for good. what appears to be glitter
coating his horn is actually a layer of solid, crystallised ice that formed over the years he has spent in the arctic waters of the
north. aki finds himself attracted to iceland in particular because of its geographical variety. there is always so much more to
explore and so explore he does.
on one of his trips to the mainland, he came across what appeared to an abandoned shack. however, he could see something
glittering in the sunlight just in front of it. intruigued, aki approached the object. what he found was a rock of some sort.
maybe an ore or some sort of gemstone or mineral? he couldn't be sure. he began to walk around the building and noticed that
the door was slightly askew and off its hinges. he wriggled himself through the gap and inside. though it was dark, there was
enough light coming in through the rafters that he could see the contents of the shack and from the looks of it, it appeared to be
a warehouse of some sort. there was crafted metal all around him, from jewelry to armour to little figurines. aki was awestruck
and despite his best instincts, had to try some on. most of it didn't seem to fit him, and must have been designed for some
other species, but he did find some silverish rings with which he decided to pierce his dorsal fin. finding that was all that fit him,
and that he felt a little bit guilty for stealing, he called it quits and returned to his preferred home in the sea.
it wasn't for a while that aki felt the desire to return to the warehouse again. this time he noticed that the door was wide open
and that there was someone else, a human, inside of it. aki stood outside the door unsure of whether he should enter when the
man grabbed some bags and began walking his way. he quickly scuttled back so that the man wouldn't see him and watched in
curiosity as the human began to trudge through the snow covered rock with a determined gait. he couldn't help but follow him.
they travelled for miles before aki was led to what was a truly awesome sight. molten lava from a small nearby volcano bubbled
over its rim and travelled like little river straight into the arctic sea where it solidified and sank. reaching the point where fire
met water, the man set down his bags and appeared to set up some sort of work station. then the man took a metal from his
bags and plunged it into the lava. aki yelped in surprise and the man looked up, noticing him and saying something in a jibberish
he couldn't understand before pulling the metal from the lava and then lowering it into the sea. it was then that aki realised
what he was doing, he was forging something. at first aki watched from a distance, but the more the man worked, the
more he wanted to see it up close. slowly he inched forward until he sat several feet from the bench. the man appeared to be
creating a plate of some sort, maybe a shield? when he was finished he packed up his tools and dragged himself the long way
back to the shack where he dropped it all and then left in a different direction. confused, aki watched him go but returned
himself back to the ocean.
the next time he saw the man he followed him again. and the next. and the next. each time he sat still as night while he watched
the man work. after a few trips, before returning home the man gifted him with two bracelts, which looked silverish but had
more of a white overtone. it was a metal he had never seen before, and assumed it must also be the metal from which his fin
rings were made. aki was ecstatic and pranced around, showing off his new accessories. the man smiled and bent down to pet
him before closing up the shop and again leaving for the night. from then on aki returned every day hoping to see the man there.
when he was he followed him to watch him work as always, and when he wasn't he browsed the artifacts in the warehouse. it
seemed there was no end to what this man could make. several months later aki spent the day with him once again, watching
as we worked. this time however he noticed that the man was doing something special with this piece, embellishing it with
delicate purple jewels. as always they returned to the shack but this time before leaving the man placed the finished piece right
around aki's neck. aki was captivated with it. it was the perfect piece to complete his set. indebted, aki bowed to let the man
know of his appreciation before returning to the sea again. the next time he returned, he found the shack empty. no jewelry, no
metal, no man. where the man had gone aki was not sure, but he did know that he would sorely miss him and is forever in
gratitude for the finely crafted jewelry that was gifted to him.
sorry. i didn't mean for it to get so long.
