The Lizard Den


Desmond
Short Personality: He is energetic, but wary of strangers. Normally he avoids confrontations and only lashes out if he can't get away. He enjoys warm sunny climates and chasing smaller critters around, either for food or just for fun.


Chrysos
Guesses the number 10, his number was 9.
Short Personality: He is a no-nonsense sort who doesn't play much. He is strong and hardy and can endure just about anything. Likes the outdoors and prefers not to be confined.


Teosinte
Personality: Easy going but far from lazy, this little guy is a very helpful sort. A bit like a working dog but considerably more tolerant of boredom, he likes being given jobs to do. With a person this often means following them around when they're doing chores to assist in any way a lizard can. Although he's a lousy guard pet, he makes a great child monitor, keeping small kids away from danger and out of trouble. Even with other lizards he'll do things like helping forage or lizard-sit the younger ones. Image

He befriends other lizards easily, assuming they don't mind him hanging around them near constantly, but he prefers the company of his own human family when he can get it. He'll be friendly with anyone, but he is always loyal first and foremost to his people. He rarely ever tires of their company and tries to be with them as much as possible.

Fortunately, he doesn't mind being left alone as long as it isn't for too long. A warm, quiet spot to nap and a good chew toy are his equivalent of curling up with a cup of tea and a good book. A little solitude isn't so bad as long as he has some way to pass the time. Being alone is also a good chance for him to tidy up his space, retrieve any lost toys, and of course give himself a good grooming. This is one lizard who doesn't neglect keeping himself neat and clean, always being sure to get between his nails and to carefully pick off any bits of loose dry skin.

But what does any of this have to do with candy corn?
Not much, really. This guy doesn't have any special love of sweets or of fall or summer (candy corn was originally a summer treat!) But what he does like is helping work in the garden or in the kitchen, like with this candy corn recipe. Sure there isn't much he could do aside from fetching forgotten or misplaced items and maybe working the food processor, but you can rest assured that he will be there at your side, watching you work and patiently awaiting any instructions.

And if you want to plant corn or anything else for that matter, there is no better helper around. He can dig holes, pop seeds in, bury them, and even carry around a hose or watering can to give them water. And weeding is easy, just point him at the offending plant and watch him dig it right up. But be careful about sending him after poisonous plants since he uses his mouth to pull them up and haul them away.



Anaran
Personality: Bold and cocky, this guy isn't scared of anything and is nearly impossible to intimidate. So you're twice his size? He doesn't care. But rather than being a bully this actually makes him quite friendly. He'll approach anyone or anything without fear or hesitation to try to get to know it. This makes him great for anyone with other larger pets.

On the down side, if someone or something does get on his bad side he is a bit of a scrapper and will try to take on fights he has no hope of winning. Small but wiry, he is quick and agile which is the only reason he doesn't often get himself maimed in fights. And if you think he's bad normally, just try threatening someone he cares about. Luckily in the case of a misunderstanding he is quick to forgive and forget rather than hold any sort of grudge. A little tussle now and then can actually make him closer friends with someone.

Appearance: His wings are too small to allow him to fly, so don't expect to see him flitting around free as a bat. They do allow him some gliding ability, which is good since he isn't afraid of heights. His stripe has no special properties, but it is very visible. Likewise his eyes don't glow but they are very reflective, like a cat's eyes. In the dark he looks like nothing but a pair of shining eyes hovering over a floating orange streak. He has excellent night vision so this is a common sight.

And those muddy looking feet? As often as not they really are caked in mud. This is not a clean lizard and keeping him that way is an exercise in futility. No matter how long you bathe him he still looks dirty, and when he's not clean you can barely tell until after he's tracked dirt all over the house. At least he doesn't mind being washed as long as he doesn't get scrubbed too hard, especially not around those sensitive wings of his.
