7. Tip him off
Roll says... 3: Set me up?
"You didn't set me up, did you?" you ask, warily taking a step back.
Thistlenose blinks in surprise. "Of course not. I have just as much to gain out of this as you. Don't forget that it's ForestClan apprentices that have been attacked."
"Well, sure." You're still cautious. "But how else could he have known?"
"Did you do anything to betray your curiosity?" she says. "Or, perhaps...he thought you were Ravenpaw."
"But he said that he was trying to scare me specifically." You resume walking, brow furrowed in thought.
"Then who might have told him?"
"I don't know. Eveningtail, maybe. Or whoever else was in that group just sent him out on a hunch." You sigh. "I have no idea. Let's just check out the waterfall."
You're at the spot in a minute. The waterfall isn't particularly large, but you can see that there's a clump of rocks right where the water hits, and slippery stones at the top - no cat could escape falling if they were swept down that far. You don't know how deep the water is, but if it's enough to carry cats all the way down to the border, then you don't want to try swimming in it. The sound of the water would likely mask the sound of someone walking, and the plants nearby to hide a scent.
This is the perfect area to sneak up on unsuspecting cats and kill them quickly with no muss or fuss. How this got discovered, you don't know, but the more important question is: who started this whole thing?
You two agree to sniff around for possible clues, and since you're familiar with rivers, you cross over to the other side and look around. Thistlenose keeps to the original side and pokes around through the piles of leaves and patches of mushrooms.
At first, your search nets you nothing, but patience and observation eventually gives you a very faint trail. The scent is familiar - one of your Clanmates - but it isn't strong enough to say who. Your guess is that they were here a few days ago, and just didn't think to cover up their smell. It leads further away from the river, so you call over Thistlenose to help you. Together, you trail the mystery cat down the slopes and near BrookClan territory, but before you can go any further, Thistlenose stops.
"I have to leave," she says, looking up at the sky. "It's nearly time for the patrol. Can you follow it on your own?"
"It's getting a little stronger," you reply. "I'll find out where it goes. When can I catch up with you?"
"Towards the evening." She nods to you, bids you good luck, and runs back home, leaving you to continue your search alone.
You trace it back towards the pine forest on the other side of the territories, which is a tiring walk, but you're heading downhill, so it could be worse. Meanwhile, the scent is still too faint to properly identify - you think you catch something familiar a few times, but several of your Clanmates smell like that, so you just keep going.
Tracking Skill +1.
Finally, you hit a jackpot in the pines - a spot where the cat stopped and rested for a while. And it's far fresher - they had just been here yesterday, by the smell of it. There's someone unfamiliar here, but you disregard them for finding the culprit.
You have a select list of cats that smell like this. You mentally sort through them, one by one, until you realize who this is. You stop in sheer disbelief, huffing out an almost amused sigh. Of all cats...
Your train of thought is halted when you hear someone coming. You don't know who it is just yet - their scent is too far away for you.
Hide and watch them go.
Approach them.
Wait for them to show up.
