Roll says... 7: Tracking.
"Can we do tracking?" you ask, because you certainly do not need to learn how to track so you can uncover this great mystery and everyone involved, no sir. You just want to learn how to follow mice.
"Sure." Applefoot nods, and then leads you into the woods to practice.
There isn't much to the practice - you've already gotten some exercise in on your own, so Applefoot just has you trail prey and old scents. She then makes it harder by disguising her own scent after rolling in some plants and then leaving and hiding so you can trail her. It's difficult enough that you end up going around in circles, before finally giving up, only to discover that she barely went a few fox-lengths away. She teases you, and you make a rude gesture.
Tracking Skill +1.
After a while, though, you catch on, and start taking notice of bent grass blades and kicked up dust. You improve greatly, and by the time Applefoot calls it a day you're finding her pretty quickly.
"You're pretty quick for a beginner," she says as you two head for home.
"You could have used harder herbs," you point out. "Mint and parsley aren't that difficult to trail."
"True." She vaguely smiles. "I'll have to step it up, then. Maybe I'll start swimming in water next time."
"But then you'd leave water droplets," you say.
"Also true." She nods. "We'll figure something out that's good and hard for you tomorrow - if you're still good to train."
It surprises you that there's a hint of warmth in her voice. You don't question it, instead just grinning and saying, "Definitely."
When you come back to camp, it's a little late in the afternoon. Applefoot tosses you a carp and grabs herself a squirrel, and you sit together to eat. You don't say much, but the company is still pleasant.
You're gnawing on the bones when you notice Eveningtail dragging herself into camp, followed by Snailpelt and Jayface, who both look extremely grave. Everyone quickly looks their way as Eveningtail climbs onto the small stump in the middle of camp that's used for meetings. Her head is hanging, and she looks shaken.
Finally, taking several breaths, she lifts her head and says, "Will everyone please gather around for a Clan meeting. I have something very important to say."
A feeling of dread crawls into your belly, and you slowly get to your feet and walk closer, Applefoot behind you. Everyone crowds around with the same anxious expression.
Eveningtail steadies her breathing again, and says, "I...regret to inform everyone that Birchstar was found dead on our territory."
