You don't respond. Instead, you opt for giving her a sad, disappointed face. When she looks up at you again, she winces.

"I just- I'm thankful for your concern, but it's..." Knotpaw fumbles with the innumerable flimsy excuses she can give under your gaze, muttering multiple phrases that get quieter and quieter the more she realizes there's no way of talking herself out of this one. She eventually gives up and lets her head sink to the ground, rolling onto her side and shutting her eyes.

There's a somewhat long pause, which you patiently wait through. If words won't get to her, maybe silence will.

Finally, she says, "I'll do something, alright? I'll find something to do about it."

"Good," you say, nodding once.

She sighs, and tiredly gets to her feet. "I better go get something, then-"

"Why?" you say, tilting your head. "Didn't you just say you would do something about it?"

"Well- it..." Knotpaw starts, but struggles for a moment, and then stops. "You know wh- yeah. That's true. She can get something for herself, right?"

"Right," you say.

"She's not helpless, she can do it." Knotpaw looks at you, and there's a flicker of determination in her eyes. "Yeah. I'll just catch some fish and go home."

"If you want to catch fish," you remind her. "Not if she wants you to."

"I want to. I want to." You can see a smile slowly forming on her face. "I might as well, I'm out here."

"Okay then." You grin in full support. "I'll see you later then."

"Right. Okay." Knotpaw stops for a second, as if there's a shadow of doubt, but shakes her head and fully smiles. "See you later."

With that, she trots off for the river, not entirely upbeat, but confident. Your work is done here.
