Choices:

1. Demand
2. Threaten
3. Demand
4. Demand
5. Hit him
6. Demand
7. Hit him

Roll says... 2: Threaten.

"You've got about ten seconds to explain yourself before you start losing appendages," you growl. Your claws are unsheathed and currently digging into his chest and shoulder.

He coughs and shakes his head slowly, looking up at you with a weak smile. "Well, I..." He sighs. "There's no real good way to explain myself here, is there?"

"Nope," you say.

"Look, I wasn't aiming to...kill you," he says, glancing around to make sure no one's listening. You grab his attention by curling your claws and piercing his skin. He winces.

"I swear. I wasn't." He lifts up a paw. "Clan's honor, I wasn't. I just..." He glances around again, before whispering, "I just wanted to scare you out of this whole thing."

"Well, you nearly killed me in the attempt," you say dryly. "Good job."

"Rookpaw, this isn't somewhere to be sticking your nose in," he says, still trying to be quiet. "I get that you're curious, but-"

"Three attempted murders," you say, loudly enough to make him flinch and hush you. "One succeeded, another just barely failed, and the third on your own Clanmate. Why are you killing apprentices?"

"Will you keep your voice down?!" he hisses.

"Why should I?" you snap, bristling.

"Because if they catch word that I'm tellin' you about this..." He shudders, looking around from his odd angle again. "Please, can you just...let me up? I'll explain as much as I can, okay, just let me get up. I won't even run."

"Reeaaally." You look at him with narrowed eyes.

"Swear on everything." He squirms, trying to get up; you claw him a little. "If I run you can sneak deathberries into my food. Just let me up and we can talk without drawing attention."

You glare at him. On the one paw, he's strong enough to just push you up anyway, but he's honestly trying to make an arrangement with you. On the other, you don't trust him one bit.

You can talk on the ground.
Fine, but don't you dare run.
I oughta kill you, you know.

"You can talk on the ground"

5. Talk on the ground
6. Fine, but don't run

Roll says... 3: Oughta kill you.

"I really should kill you," you say, curling your lip. "You're a murderer."

"I am not!" he shouts, and immediately shrinks when his voice echoes. "Rookpaw, believe me, I didn't do it. I was in camp when all of that was going on. Just...let me up, alright? We can talk. We're both mature here."

You narrow your eyes even further, scrutinizing him. He stares back pleadingly.

Finally, you give up with a huff, and step away to let him get to his feet. "I'll chase you if you run," you warn him.

"Noted." He sits down and starts nursing his shoulder where you clawed him.

"Tell me about what exactly happened, then." You sit down and wait, still looking annoyed. "With the other apprentices."

He pauses mid-lick and gives you an apologetic look. "I can't. My life depends on that being kept a secret."

"Well, you're helpful."

"There's- there's some things I can talk about. We didn't, uh...cover everything." He offers a hopeful smile. You don't buy it.

"And who is this 'we'?" you say. "Why are there more cats involved? Who are they?"

He lifts up a paw and makes a line across his mouth with it. You huff in frustration.

"Then what can you tell me?"

He sighs, turning his gaze to the ground. "Just that it's gunna be over soon. If that helps."

"What does that mean?" you say, feeling the anger returning. "Eveningtail wouldn't tell me about it either."

His head shoots up. "You talked to Eveningtail?"

"Not very much." You force your fur to relax. "She just asked me not to get involved, 'until it goes too far'."

"Wise words," he mumbles.

"The problem is that I don't know what 'it' is!" You lean forward a little, eyes burning intensely. "No one will tell me. All I know is that 'it' involves killing apprentices for...some reason. Care to explain that?"

"I didn't have anything to do with that one," he says. He looks oddly mournful. "I refused. Someone else took care of it." He sighs again, and says, "I'm sorry. I just...I can't tell you any more of it. All I can offer is that you stay out of it."

You're feeling your patience slip, but if you can pry any more out of him, now would be the time. You breath, make yourself calm down, and say, "There has to be at least one other thing you can tell me."

Thriftwhisker thinks for a second. The seconds passing grate on you.

Finally, he stands up and says, "If you can, catch your own food. Tell people where you're going, and don't go around at night. It can be...hard to see."

"And I'm supposed to guess at what that means."

"You are." He smiles sadly. "You're clever, aren't you? You can figure it out."

With that, he turns around and trots into the woods.

Well then.

The next few days are spent near the border, waiting for some sign of Thistlenose. When you ask a small grey apprentice about her, she mentions that Thistlenose has greencough, and makes sure to send your well-wishes her way. But that's all you get, which is really starting to get at you because hello you found out something really important and she needs to hear about this, could she have chosen a worse time to get ill?

You at first debate over telling someone about it, but your instincts make you wary of getting others involved. It may be the smarter thing to do, but when you try and approach Birchstar, he's oblivious to what you're talking about (and, since you have little idea of it yourself, your case is doomed from the start). Plus, the realization that there are more than two cats involved is really starting to make you paranoid that you could end up telling someone who's in on these shenanigans, and you're pretty sure that'll end poorly. You just keep your nose to the ground and your ear to the walls.

The patrol plans have been working splendidly. The cats keep it polite and short at first, but slowly the bonds are rebuilt. Beefur tuts at this - he insists that they can't be fully trusted - but everyone else is relieved at the loss of tension. The apprentices are free to go around on their own, which wouldn't be so bad if Cinderpaw would just stay in camp and not trample all over the place like a one-legged badger, scaring your prey away. You don't say anything, of course, but you do make rude faces when her back is turned.

The weather is beginning to warm up, bit by bit, so you're spending time in the shade or water, thinking over everything. It's during one of the warmer days that you're dozing by the beach that something catches your attention.

It's a very weird noise - high and halting, with the tiniest wheezing - and you stop musing about whatever and listen carefully. It sounds sort of like a mouse of some kind, but the irregular pitch, corresponding with the occasional faint rustling, makes you uncertain. You stand up to follow the sound - you don't think it's moving, given that it stays in one place, but if it's indeed a mouse, you might just catch some prey.

Follow it stealthily.
Follow it normally.
