Roll says... 1: Ask about scratches.
"Did you two see anyone today who had a scratch on them?" you say, a little more demanding than you'd like. "Like a cut on their side, or leg, or something?"
They glance at each other, uncertain. Rowanpaw shakes his head. "I didn't really take a look at anyone today. Sorry."
"I think I might've heard someone talking about scratches," says Fogpaw thoughtfully.
You practically leap up out of the lavender, startling them both. "Who was it? Did they say that they had the scratch, or that someone else did?"
"What's the deal with you?" Rowanpaw looks confused. "Applefoot said you were mopey and low-energy, and you didn't want to do anything."
"I lied." You wave your tail dismissively. "Fogpaw, what exactly was said about scratches?"
The grey tom glances awkwardly at his friend, and then slowly replies, "Just that...they didn't like the medicine used for them, is all."
"Well, who said it?!" You almost shriek in frustration.
"Uh...I don't...know. I think it was a tom. I wasn't paying a lot of attention." Fogpaw backs up a few steps.
You make a noise like a badger and flop onto the ground, clawing at the earth and growling to yourself. "I need to know who it was."
"Why?" Rowanpaw sounds alarmed. "What does it matter?"
"It just matters, alright?" You stand up again after sufficiently tearing up the earth in front of you. "Look, don't tell anyone I was asking about it. This needs to be secret."
"Rookpaw, what's going on?" Rowanpaw says. He looks genuinely concerned. "You're acting really weird. Did you have a nightmare, or something?"
"Practically." You trot off, barely remembering to wave your tail goodbye, leaving the toms watching you in increasing perplexity.
Right. Where to investigate now?
The northern river.
The southern river.
The lake.
Keep searching for the herb.
Head to camp.
