We will be asking/quizzing each other about rabbit things that we should know. We are basically roleplaying the position of judge and showman and switching roles.

Me asking about how to avoid coat discoloring/rust:
Baby bunnies! wrote:Well, what I have discovered, is that they can get the rust coloring no matter what. Sun does the worst job but heat seems to also be a factor. If you want them to molt, just up the protein amount with black oil sunflower seeds. They should molt out the coat. As for keeping them no sunburn, they would have to be in a cool dark area.

Asking about my rabbit sneezing:
Baby bunnies! wrote:Aw poor bun! Let's hope it is just Bordetella!
Alright so Pasteurellosis (Rhinitis/snuffles) is a bacterial disease. So if you have good ventilation and clean the rabbit cage I don't know why it started, but good thing is i know of a medicine that may help!
It is called Sulfadimethoxine by DurVet (water soluble powder).

" Sulpha drugs are most effective in treatment, not in prevention. Sulfadimethoxine is the most effective sulpha drug and the one best tolerated by nursing or pregnant does:

· curative dose: 0.5 to 0.7 g/litre drinking-water;
· preventive dose: 0.25 g/litre drinking-water.

The bacteriostatic activity of this drug, especially on pasteurellosis, makes it one of the best rabbit medicines. It should not be overused."

The sulpha drug also works against Coccidiosis. So a great medicine to have around!!
I would dose Maize as well. If she doesn't have matted fur on her paws then she hasn't started snotting yet and it could be the hay and fur. But to be on the safe side, I would dose her.

Also 0.5 to 0.7 g/litre drinking-water for curative dose is this: 1/8 tsp per 32oz of drinking water.

And give them this for 5 - 7 days(or five - seven 32oz watterbottles )

Hope this helps!

Asking about Pippin's Pimples:
Baby bunnies! wrote:Okay so this is what you need to do. You need to either lance the pimples or let him pop them himself. The pimples themselves do not hurt the rabbit. However they could be considered as an std, because they will probably show up on the doe. It is a bacteria build up that forms into the Whitehead.
I just pop the pimple with my finger nails and then take a water soaked cotton ball and rub the genitalia. Then check in a few days to see if more came up or not. If not, wait one more day thenyou can you him to breed. Same applies to does.

Wow! Asking about bunny genetics!:

e Non Extension

Enen Broken
enen Solid
EnEn Charlie (with more then 80% color or less then 10% color)

VV Not showing Vienna
Vv Showing Vienna traits
vv Vienna (BEW)

Okay, so Maizy is a Lilac rabbit therefore her color, which is called standard, is also known as Lilac.
The color Lilac has the base color of brown. They carry the dilute gene that makes them lilac. Brown in recessive, and so is dilute. Black is dominate and if it has the dilute gene, then black turns to blue.
Any rabbit of any breed can carry the recessive c gene that causes white. Each parent is supposed to carry the recessive c gene in order for it to appear.

So I believe that Maizy is
aa bb Cc dd E_ W_

and the other rabbit that is completely black is
Code: Select all
aa B_ Cc D_ E_ W_

So the kits would be able to be white, black, blue, lilac, chocolate/brown.

A: Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis is a inflammation of rabbits eye lid. It is a bacterial disease/infection and is also known as 'pink eye' or 'weepy eye'. It can also be caused by dust, sprays, or fumes. The pink or red part around the eye is called the conjunctiva.
Treatment: The earlier you have caught it, the better and faster it will cure! Apply local ophthalmic ointment 2-4 times per day for 3-4 days, as needed.
Prevent: Keeping water clean to prevent bacterial growth. Use reduced dust bedding. Clean dirty cages or litterboxes.

Correct! Conjunctivitis is also commonly seen in kits with nest box eye but very thing you said was correct. Thank you for providing extra info and sources.

A: Judging the Jersey Wooly

There are many things that you should look for in a Jersey Wooly when picking one out for showing.

Always keep in mind that in the Jersey Woolies, general type is worth the most points and is the most important thing to look at when chosingb a showable JW.

A Jersey Wooly is a small breed that has the weight limit of three and a half pounds when older 6 months or older. If the rabbit exceeds this weight at any age, it would be DQed, don't buy it.

Good... They should have a compact body type with natural positioned head carriage. When you pose the JW you should not force the head in any position but still pose the body. While evaluating the body type, do not look at the rabbit. The wool gives an illusion of a good or bad body type. Feel the structure of the rabbit. The body is to be short and balanced with the depth and width. There should be no tapering from the hindquarters to the shoulders while viewing the JW from the top. The top line starts after the neck/earbase, the high point is the loin area, after that it gradually 'falls' down to the tail in a gentle curve.
Bad qualities (faults)You don't want to see a long body or really chunky/obese. Narrowness in shoulders or the hips. Flat top lines with no rise. Pinched hocks and or hindquarters are not desired. Catchy hips and rough spine ate not good either.
Disqualifications. Long, rangy, racy, body type often similar to a hare.
Good... Head is to be close to the shoulders appearing almost as if the rabbit had no neck. The head should be carried up, the highest point of the head should be equal to the highest point on the body. The head should have a round and short of bull dog head appearance. Along the jaw line should be side trimmings that blend into the body wool. It needs to have a wool cap, dense wool that is short, located from the earbase forward.
Disqualifications Familiar to have/show wool cap and side trimming. Also a thin narrow pinchy muzzle area is not wanted traits.

Ears may not exceed three inches in length.

Legs are too be straight and also be strong and structurally safe. Normal fur on legs is required, DQ if wool is found below the ankel joint.

Wool may be slightly coarse to the touch. Should look and feel healthy, cleanliness should be considered.
Non desirable wool would feel extremely coarse or very soft/cotton-like.

You want a good tempered rabbit.

-------------------------------------------

If youwant a JW as a pet then just make sure that the rabbit is one that you like the look and personality of. Type doesn't matter for a pet.

Be aware that the rabbit may get wool block easily and should be gromed regularly.

A: Judging Commercial Body Typed Rabbits
When judging commercial rabbits, you are looking for balance throughout the body. The depth and the width of the animal are to be equal. This group is considered to be the ideal meat type of rabbit. Their top line should be round and smooth. The high point of the top line is to be right above the hips.
Firmness of flesh is a very important factor, including the look of fullness at first glance.

Are their any disqualifications BB?

Yes there are disqualifications. All general DQ 's apply, in example: sickness, miscolored toenails, coat issues.
There are many faults as well (mainly general faults however there are more for commercial typed rabbits) many faults are due to qualities that do not give a good bulky meaty look.

A: Registering young rabbits

a rabbit may be any age to be registered, however they must meet the senior weight requirements for the breed. The must also be pure breed for at least three generations back and have a pedigree. The typical price to register a rabbit is 6 dollars. Registrars are commonly found at ARBA sanctioned shows.

Q: What is the newest rabbit breed that has been accepted that many people don't know about yet?

A: Checking rabbit's legs
When checking your rabbit's legs, you are looking for the straightness of the leg you are also checking if the rabbit has a hereditary body type fault that causes bowed legs. You are also looking for any bends or 'breaks' that indicate a sprain or broken bone.

Q: Describe Pinched Hocks.

A: Pinched Hocks
Cow hocks and pinched hocks are the same, correct?
The hind legs will turn inward at the hock causing the food to turn outward from the body. A disqualification from competition.
